NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal confronted his mother's brothers at Shechem and, to them and to the wholeclan of his maternal grandfather's family, he said,	1 Abimélec, hijo de Ierubaal, fue a Siquem, donde estaban los hermanos de su madre, y les dijo a ellos y a todo el clan de la casa paterna de su madre:
2 'Please put this question to the leading men of Shechem: Which is better for you: to be ruled by seventypeople -- al Jerubbaal's sons -- or to be ruled by one? Remember too that I am your own flesh and bone.'	2 «Digan a todos los señores de Siquem: «¿Qué es mejor para ustedes, que los gobiernen setenta hombres –todos los hijos de Ierubaal– o que los gobierne uno solo? Recuerden además que yo soy de la misma sangre que ustedes».
3 His mother's brothers said al this on his behalf to al the leading men of Shechem, and their feelingsswayed them to follow Abimelech, since they argued, 'He is our brother.'	3 Los hermanos de su madre comunicaron estas palabras de Abimélec a los señores de Siquem, y estos se pusieron de parte de él, porque decían: «Es nuestro hermano».
4 So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and with this Abimelech paidviolent adventurers to fol ow him.	4 Luego le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal Berit, con los que Abimélec contrató a unos hombres y aventureros, que le sirvieron de escolta.
5 He then went to his father's house at Ophrah and put his brothers, Jerubbaal's seventy sons, to deathon one and the same stone. Jotham, however, Jerubbaal's youngest son, escaped by going into hiding.	5 Enseguida entró en la casa de su padre, en Ofrá, y mató a sus hermanos, los setenta hijos de Ierubaal, sobre una misma piedra. Sólo escapó Jotam, el hijo menor de Ierubaal, porque logró esconderse.
6 All the leading men of Shechem and al Beth-Mil o then met and proclaimed Abimelech king at the oakof the cultic stone at Shechem.	6 Entonces se reunieron todos los señores de Siquem y todo Bet Miló, y fueron a proclamar rey a Abimélec, junto a la encina de la piedra conmemorativa que está en Siquem.
7 News of this was brought to Jotham. He went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted at thetop of his voice: Hear me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may also hear you!	7 Cuando le llevaron la noticia a Jotam, este se puso en la cima del monte Garizim, y gritó con voz potente: «Escúchenme, señores de Siquem, y que Dios los escuche a ustedes:
8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king to rule them. They said to the olive tree, 'Be our king!'	8 Los árboles se pusieron en camino para ungir a un rey que los gobernará. Entonces dijeron al olivo: «Sé tú nuestro rey».
9 The olive tree replied, 'Must I forgo my oil which gives honour to gods and men, to stand and sway overthe trees?'	9 Pero el olivo les respondió: «¿Voy a renunciar a mi aceite con el que se honra a los dioses y a los hombres, para ir a mecerme por encima de los árboles?
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and be our king!'	10 Los árboles dijeron a la higuera: «Ven tú a reinar sobre nosotros».
11 The fig tree replied, 'Must I forgo my sweetness, forgo my excel ent fruit, to go and sway over thetrees?'	11 Pero la higuera les respondió: «¿Voy a renunciar a mi dulzura y a mi sabroso fruto, para ir a mecerme por encima de los árboles?»
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and be our king!'	12 Los árboles le dijeron a la vid: «Ven tú a reinar sobre nosotros».
13 The vine replied, 'Must I forgo my wine which cheers gods and men, to go and sway over the trees?'	13 Pero la vid les respondió: «¿Voy a renunciar a mi mosto que alegra a los dioses y a los hombres, para ir a mecerme por encima de los árboles?».
14 Then the trees al said to the thorn bush, 'You come and be our king!'	14 Entonces, todos los árboles dijeron a la zarza: «Ven tú a reinar sobre nosotros».
15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, 'If you are anointing me in good faith to be your king, come andshelter in my shade. But, if not, fire will come out of the thorn bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 Pero la zarza respondió a los árboles: «Si de veras quieren ungirme para que reine sobre ustedes, vengan a cobijarse bajo mi sombra; de lo contrario, saldrá fuego de la zarza y consumirá los cedros del Líbano».
16 'Now then, if you have acted in sincerity and good faith in making Abimelech king, if you have dealthonourably with Jerubbaal and his family, and have treated him as his actions deserved,	16 Y ahora, díganme: ¿Han obrado ustedes con sinceridad al proclamar rey a Abimélec? ¿Se han portado bien con Ierubaal y con su familia, y lo han tratado como se merecía?
17 my father having fought for you, risked his life and rescued you from the power of Midian,	17 Mi padre combatió por ustedes, arriesgó su vida y los libró del poder de Madián,
18 and you today having risen up against my father's family, murdered his sons -- seventy of them on oneand the same stone -- and appointed Abimelech, his slave-girl's son, to rule the leading men of Shechem,because he is your brother!-	18 y ahora ustedes se han levantado contra la familia de mi padre, han matado sobre una misma piedra a sus setenta hijos, y han proclamado rey de los señores de Siquem y Abimélec, el hijo de su esclava, aduciendo que es hermano de ustedes.
19 if, I say, you have acted in sincerity and good faith towards Jerubbaal and his family, then mayAbimelech be your joy and may you be his!	19 Si hoy han sido sinceros y leales con Ierubaal y su familia, que Abimélec sea para ustedes un motivo de Alegría, y ustedes para él.
20 If not, may fire come out of Abimelech and devour the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o, andfire come out of the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o to devour Abimelech!'	20 De lo contrario, que salga fuego de Abimélec para devorar a los señores de Siquem y de Bet Miló, y que salga fuego de los señores de Siquem y de Bet Miló, para devorar a Abimélec.
21 Jotham then took to his heels; he fled and made his way to Beer; and there he stayed, to be out of hisbrother Abimelech's reach.	21 Después Jotam huyó para ponerse a salvo, y se estableció en Beer, lejos de su hermano Abimélec.
22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years.	22 Abimélec gobernó tres años en Israel,
23 God then sent a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders ofShechem betrayed Abimelech.	23 Pero Dios envió un espíritu de discordia entre Abimélec y los señores de Siquem, y estos traicionaron a Abimélec.
24 And this was so that the crime committed against Jerubbaal's seventy sons should be avenged, andtheir blood recoil on their brother Abimelech who had murdered them, and on those leaders of Shechem whohad helped him to murder his brothers.	24 Así debía ser castigado el crimen cometido contra los setenta hijos de Ierubaal, y su sangre debía recaer sobre su hermano Abimélec, que los había matado, y sobre los señores de Siquem, que habían sido cómplices en la matanza de sus hermanos.
25 The leaders of Shechem put men to ambush him on the mountain tops, and these robbed anyonetravel ing their way. Abimelech was told of this.	25 Por eso, los señores de Siquem preparaban emboscadas contra él en las cimas de los montes, y saqueaban a todos los que pasaban por allí. Abimélec fue informado de todo esto.
26 Gaal son of Obed, with his brothers, happened to pass through Shechem and win the confidence ofthe leaders of Shechem.	26 Una vez, Gaal, hijo de Ebed, pasó por Siquem junto con sus hermanos, y se ganó la confianza de los señores de Siquem.
27 These went out into the countryside to harvest their vineyards; they trod the grapes and made merryand went into the temple of their god. They ate and drank there and cursed Abimelech.	27 Estos salieron al campo a vendimiar, pisaron las uvas, hicieron festejos y entraron en el templo de su dios. Después de comer y beber, maldijeron a Abimélec.
28 Gaal son of Obed said, 'Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, for us to be his slaves? Should notJerubbaal's son and his lieutenant, Zebul, be serving the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we behis slaves?	28 Entonces Gaal, hijo de Ebed, exclamó: «¿Qué autoridad tiene Abimélec sobre Siquem que le estamos sometidos? ¿El hijo de Ierubaal, y de Zebul, su lugarteniente, no han estado sometidos a la gente de Jamor, el padre de Siquem? ¿Por qué tenemos que estar sometidos a ellos?
29 Who wil put this people under my command, so that I can expel Abimelech? I should say to him,"Reinforce your army and come out!" '	29 ¡Si pusieran a este pueblo en mis manos, yo expulsaría a Abimélec, desafiándolo a que refuerce su ejército y salga a combatir!».
30 Zebul the governor of the town was told what Gaal son of Obed had said, and he was furious.	30 Zebul, el gobernador de la ciudad, al enterarse de las palabras de Gaal, hijo de Ebed, se enfureció
31 He sent messengers secretly to Abimelech to say, 'Look! Gaal son of Obed has come to Shechemwith his brothers, and they are stirring up the town against you.	31 y envió disimuladamente mensajeros a Arumá, donde estaba Abimélec, para avisarle: «Gaal, hijo de Ebed, ha llegado a Siquem con sus hermanos, y está sublevando la ciudad contra ti.
32 So, move under cover of dark, you and the men you have with you, and take up concealed positions inthe countryside;	32 Por eso, ven durante la noche con toda la gente que tienes contigo y quédate al acecho en campo abierto.
33 then in the morning at sunrise, break cover and rush on the town. When Gaal and his supporters comeout to meet you, treat them as occasion offers.'	33 Por la mañana temprano, apenas brille el sol, irrumpirás contra la ciudad. Y cuando Gaal con su gente salga a enfrentarse contigo, lo tratarás como más convenga».
34 So Abimelech set off under cover of dark with al his own supporters and took up concealed positionsover against Shechem, in four groups.	34 Abimélec salió durante la noche con toda su gente y se puso al acecho cerca de Siquem, con su tropa dividida en cuatro grupos.
35 As Gaal son of Obed was coming out and pausing at the entrance of the town gate, Abimelech and hissupporters rose from their ambush.	35 Cuando Gaal, hijo de Ebed, salió y se detuvo a las puertas de la ciudad, Abimélec y la tropa que lo acompañaba salieron de los lugares donde estaban al acecho.
36 Gaal saw these men and said to Zebul, 'Look, there are men coming down from the tops of themountains!' Zebul answered, 'You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.'	36 Al ver las tropas, Gaal dijo a Zebul: «Mira esa gente que baja de la cima de los montes». «Es la sombra de los montes, y a ti te parecen hombres», le respondió Zebul.
37 But Gaal insisted, 'Look, there are men coming down from the Navel of the Earth and another group iscoming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.'	37 Pero Gaal insistió: «Es gente que baja por la ladera del Ombligo de la Tierra, y otro grupo viene por el camino de la Encina de los Adivinos».
38 Zebul then said, 'Where are your mouthings now about "Who is Abimelech, for us to be his slaves?"Are not these the men you made light of? Sally out, then, and fight him.'	38 Entonces Zebul le dijo: «¿No eras tú el que te envalentonabas, diciendo: «¿Quién es Abimélec para que le estemos sometidos?». ¡Ahí está la gente que tú despreciabas! ¡Ve ahora a combatir contra ellos!».
39 Gaal sal ied out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and engaged Abimelech.	39 Gaal salió al frente de los señores de Siquem y presentó batalla a Abimélec.
40 Abimelech drove Gaal off, who turned tail, many of his men falling dead before they could reach thegate.	40 Abimélec lo persiguió: Gaal emprendió la retirada y muchos cayeron muertos antes de llegar a la puerta de la ciudad.
41 Abimelech then stayed at Aruma, and Zebul expelled Gaal and his brothers and prevented them fromliving in Shechem.	41 Abimélec regresó a Arumá, y Zebul expulsó de Siquem a Gaal y a sus hermanos, impidiéndoles habitar allí.
42 Next day, when the people went out into the countryside, Abimelech was told of this.	42 Al día siguiente, la gente de Siquem se puso en campaña. Cuando Abimélec recibió la noticia,
43 He took his men, divided them into three groups and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the peopleleaving the town, he bore down on them and slaughtered them.	43 reunió sus tropas, las dividió en tres grupos y se puso al acecho en el campo. Al ver que la gente salía de la ciudad, irrumpió contra ellos y los derrotó.
44 While Abimelech and his group rushed forward and took position at the entrance to the town gate, thetwo other groups fel on everyone in the fields and slaughtered them.	44 Después, Abimélec y el grupo que lo acompañaba volvieron a atacar, y tomaron posiciones frente a la puerta de la ciudad. Mientras tanto, los otros dos grupos se lanzaron contra los que estaban en el campo y los derrotaron.
45 Al that day Abimelech attacked the town. He stormed it and slaughtered the people inside, razed thetown and sowed it with salt.	45 Abimélec atacó la ciudad durante todo el día. Cuando la tomó, mató a la población, arrasó la ciudad y esparció sal sobre ella.
46 On hearing this, al the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem took refuge in the crypt of the temple ofEl-Berith.	46 Al enterarse, los señores de Migdal Siquem, se refugiaron en la cripta del templo de El Berit.
47 As soon as Abimelech heard that the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem had al gathered there,	47 Cuando Abimélec recibió la noticia de que todos los señores de Migdal Siquem estaban en un solo lugar,
48 he went up Mount Zalmon with al his men. Then taking an axe in his hands, he cut off the branch of atree, picked it up and put it on his shoulder, and said to the men with him, 'Hurry and do what you have seen medo.'	48 subió al monte Salmón con todas sus tropas; y tomando un hacha, cortó una rama de árbol, se la puso al hombre, y dijo a las tropas que lo acompañaban: «¡Apúrense! 49 Each of his men similarly cut off a branch; then, following Abimelech, they piled the branches over thecrypt and set it on fire over those who were inside; so that al the people in Migdal-Shechem died too, about athousand men and women.	49 Cada uno de sus hombres cortó una rama y todos fueron detrás de Abimélec. Después cubrieron la cripta con las ramas y les prendieron fuego. Así murieron también los habitantes de Migdal Siquem, unos mil hombres y mujeres.
50 Abimelech then marched on Thebez, besieged it and captured it.	50 Luego Abimélec marchó contra Tebes, la asedió y la conquistó.
51 In the middle of the town there was a fortified tower in which al the men and women and al theleading men of the town took refuge. They locked the door behind them and climbed up to the roof of the tower.	51 En medio de la ciudad había una torre fortificada, y todos los habitantes de la ciudad, hombres y mujeres, se refugiaron en ella. La cerraron por dentro y se subieron a la parte más alta de la torre.
52 Abimelech reached the tower and attacked it. As he was approaching the door of the tower to set it onfire,	52 Abimélec se adelantó para atacar la torre y llego hasta la puerta con la intención de prenderle fuego.
53 a woman threw down a mil stone on his head and cracked his skull.	53 Pero una mujer le arrojó una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza y le partió el cráneo.
54 He instantly cal ed his young armour-bearer and said, 'Draw your sword and kil me, so that it wil notbe said of me that "A woman kil ed him".' His armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.	54 El llamó en seguida a su escudero y le dijo: «Desenvaina tu espada y mátame, para que no se pueda decir que me mató una mujer». Entonces el escudero lo atravesó con su espada y el murió.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they dispersed to their homes.	55 Al ver que Abimélec estaba muerto, los hombres de Israel regresaron cada uno a su lugar.
56 Thus God made to recoil on Abimelech the evil he had done his father by murdering his seventybrothers,	56 Dios hizo recaer sobre Abimélec el crimen que había cometido contra su padre, cuando mató a sus setenta hermanos.
57 and all the evil that the men of Shechem had done God made recoil on their heads too. And so thecurse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came true for them.	57 Y también hizo que toda la maldad de la gente de Siquem recayera sobre ellos mismos. Así se cumplió la maldición que Jotam, hijo de Ierubaal, había pronunciado contra ellos.
