1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal confronted his mother's brothers at Shechem and, to them and to the wholeclan of his maternal grandfather's family, he said,	1 Abimelec figlio di Ierobaal se ne andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre, e parlò con essi e con tutti i parenti della casa del padre di sua madre, dicendo:
2 'Please put this question to the leading men of Shechem: Which is better for you: to be ruled by seventypeople -- al Jerubbaal's sons -- or to be ruled by one? Remember too that I am your own flesh and bone.'	2 « Dite a tutti gli uomini di Sichem: Che è meglio per voi, che vi comandi uno solo o settanta uomini, tutti i figli di Ierobaal? Considerate inoltre che io sono vostro osso e vostra carne ».
3 His mother's brothers said al this on his behalf to al the leading men of Shechem, and their feelingsswayed them to follow Abimelech, since they argued, 'He is our brother.'	3 I fratelli di sua madre parlarono di lui a tutti gli uomini di Sichem, e col riferire tutte queste parole, e col dire: « Egli è nostro fratello » inclinarono il loro cuore a seguire Abimelec,

7 News of this was brought to Jotham. 9 The olive tree replied, 'Must I forgo my oil which gives honour to gods and men, to stand and sway overthe trees?'	9 Ma l'ulivo rispose: Potrei io cessar di produrre il mio olio, di cui si servon gli dèi e gli uomini, per venire a tremolare sopra gli alberi?
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and be our king!'	10 E gli alberi dissero al fico: Vieni tu a regnare su noi.
11 The fig tree replied, 'Must I forgo my sweetness, forgo my excel ent fruit, to go and sway over thetrees?'	11 Ma il fico rispose: Potrei io rinunziare alla mia dolcezza e ai miei soavissimi frutti, per venire a tremolare sopra gli alberi?
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and be our king!'	12 E gli alberi dissero alla vite: Vieni tu a regnare su noi.
13 The vine replied, 'Must I forgo my wine which cheers gods and men, to go and sway over the trees?'	13 Ma la vite disse loro: Potrei io rinunziare al mio vino che rallegra gli dèi e gli uomini, per venire a tremolare sopra gli alberi?
14 Then the trees al said to the thorn bush, 'You come and be our king!'	14 Allora tutti gli alberi dissero allo spino: Vieni tu a regnare su noi.
15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, 'If you are anointing me in good faith to be your king, come andshelter in my shade. But, if not, fire will come out of the thorn bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 E lo spino rispose loro: Se mi eleggete davvero a vostro re, venite a riposarvi sotto la mia ombra; ma se non volete farlo, dallo spino esca un fuoco e divori i cedri del Libano.
16 'Now then, if you have acted in sincerity and good faith in making Abimelech king, if you have dealthonourably with Jerubbaal and his family, and have treated him as his actions deserved,	16 Or se con giustizia e senza colpa avete eletto Abimelec a vostro re, se avete operato bene con Ierobaal e la sua casa, se avete ricompensati i benefizi di colui che combattè per voi
17 my father having fought for you, risked his life and rescued you from the power of Midian,	17 ed espose al pericolo la sua vita per liberarvi dalle mani di Madian;
18 and you today having risen up against my father's family, murdered his sons -- seventy of them on oneand the same stone -- and appointed Abimelech, his slave-girl's son, to rule the leading men of Shechem,because he is your brother!-	18 se voi (che oggi siete insorti contro la casa di mio padre, e ne avete uccisi i figli, settanta uomini, sopra una pietra, e avete eletto Abimelec, figlio d'una sua schiava, a re della gente di Sichem, perchè è vostro fratello),

20 If not, may fire come out of Abimelech and devour the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o, andfire come out of the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o to devour Abimelech!'	20 Ma se avete agito perversamente, esca da lui un fuoco, divori gli abitanti di Sichem e la città di Mello; ed un fuoco esca dagli abitanti di Sichem e dalla città di Mello a divorare Abimelec ».
21 Jotham then took to his heels; he fled and made his way to Beer; and there he stayed, to be out of hisbrother Abimelech's reach.	21 Dette queste cose fuggì e andò a Bera, ove abitò per timore di Abimelec suo fratello.
22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years.	22 Abimelec regnò sopra Israele per tre anni.
23 God then sent a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders ofShechem betrayed Abimelech.	23 Il Signore poi mandò uno spirito pessimo tra Abimelec e gli abitanti di Sichem. I Sichemiti cominciaroro a detestare Abimelec loro fratello,

27 These went out into the countryside to harvest their vineyards; they trod the grapes and made merryand went into the temple of their god. They ate and drank there and cursed Abimelech.	27 uscirono alla campagna a devastar le vigne e calpestar le uve, poi, fatti dei cori di cantori, entrarono nel tempio del loro dio, e, mangiando e bevendo, maledicevano Abimelec.
28 Gaal son of Obed said, 'Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, for us to be his slaves? Should notJerubbaal's son and his lieutenant, Zebul, be serving the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we behis slaves?	28 E Gaal figlio di Obed gridava: « Chi è Abimelec e che è Sichem da servire a lui? Non è egli il figlio di Ierobaal? Non ha costituito il suo servo Zebul come principe sopra gli uomini di Emor padre di Sichem? Perchè dunque dovremo servirgli?
29 Who wil put this people under my command, so that I can expel Abimelech? I should say to him,"Reinforce your army and come out!" '	29 Oh! se qualcuno mi desse il governo di questo popolo, io leverei di mezzo Abimelec ». E fu detto ad Abimelec: « Raduna un esercito numeroso e vieni ».
30 Zebul the governor of the town was told what Gaal son of Obed had said, and he was furious.	30 Zebul principe della città, uditi che ebbe i discorsi di Gaal figlio di Obed, si adirò fortemente,
31 He sent messengers secretly to Abimelech to say, 'Look! Gaal son of Obed has come to Shechemwith his brothers, and they are stirring up the town against you.	31 e di nascosto mandò messi che dicessero ad Abimelec: « Guarda che Gaal figlio di Obed è venuto in Sichem coi suoi fratelli, e solleva la città contro di te.
32 So, move under cover of dark, you and the men you have with you, and take up concealed positions inthe countryside;	32 Levati adunque di notte colla gente che hai teco, e sta in agguato nella campagna;
33 then in the morning at sunrise, break cover and rush on the town. When Gaal and his supporters comeout to meet you, treat them as occasion offers.'	33 poi di gran mattino sul levar del sole, piomba sulla città, e quando egli colla sua gente uscirà contro di te, fagli quel che potrai ».
34 So Abimelech set off under cover of dark with al his own supporters and took up concealed positionsover against Shechem, in four groups.	34 E Abimelec messosi in cammino di notte con tutto il suo esercito, pose insidie in quattro luoghi vicino a Sichem.
35 As Gaal son of Obed was coming out and pausing at the entrance of the town gate, Abimelech and hissupporters rose from their ambush.	35 Or Gaal figlio di Obed, uscito fuori si fermò all'entrata della porta della città; allora Abimelec, con tutto il suo esercito uscì dagli agguati.
36 Gaal saw these men and said to Zebul, 'Look, there are men coming down from the tops of themountains!' Zebul answered, 'You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.'	36 Veduta quella gente, Gaal disse a Zebul: « Ecco una moltitudine che scende dai monti ». E Zebul gli rispose: « Tu prendi le ombre dei monti per teste d'uomini e sei ingannato da tale illusione ».
37 But Gaal insisted, 'Look, there are men coming down from the Navel of the Earth and another group iscoming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.'	37 « Ecco, ripigliò Gaal, una furba discende dalle più alte cime e una schiera vien per la strada che guarda la querce ».
38 Zebul then said, 'Where are your mouthings now about "Who is Abimelech, for us to be his slaves?"Are not these the men you made light of? Sally out, then, and fight him.'	38 E Zebul gli disse: « Dov'è or la tua bocca colla quale dicevi: Chi è Abimelec per essere servito? Non è forse questo il popolo che tu disprezzavi? Esci fuori e combatti contro di lui».
39 Gaal sal ied out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and engaged Abimelech.	39 Allora Gaal uscì, e, davanti al popolo di Sichem, combattè contro Abimelec,
40 Abimelech drove Gaal off, who turned tail, many of his men falling dead before they could reach thegate.	40 Il quale, inseguendolo mentre fuggiva, lo spinse nella città e uccise molti dei suoi fin sotto la porta della città;
41 Abimelech then stayed at Aruma, and Zebul expelled Gaal and his brothers and prevented them fromliving in Shechem.	41 ma poi si fermò in Ruma; mentre Zebul cacciava Gaal e i suoi compagni dalla città, senza permettere che vi dimorassero.
42 Next day, when the people went out into the countryside, Abimelech was told of this.	42 Il giorno dopo il popolo uscì alla campagna. Saputa la cosa, Abimelec,
43 He took his men, divided them into three groups and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the peopleleaving the town, he bore down on them and slaughtered them.	43 preso l'esercito e divisolo in tre schiere, tese insidie nei campi. Appena vide che il popolo era uscito dalla città, si mosse, si scagliò contro di essi
44 While Abimelech and his group rushed forward and took position at the entrance to the town gate, thetwo other groups fel on everyone in the fields and slaughtered them.	44 colla sua schiera, e poi assalì ed assediò la città, mentre le altre due schiere inseguivano gli avversari dispersi per la campagna.
45 Al that day Abimelech attacked the town. He stormed it and slaughtered the people inside, razed thetown and sowed it with salt.	45 Abimelec, avendo combattuto contro la città per tutto quel giorno, la prese, ne uccise gli abitanti e la distrusse in guisa che fece seminare il sale.
46 On hearing this, al the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem took refuge in the crypt of the temple ofEl-Berith.	46 A tal notizia quelli che abitavano nella torre di Sichem si ritirarono nel tempio del loro dio Berit, dove avevan fatto con lui alleanza, dalla quale aveva preso il nome quel luogo molto fortificato.
47 As soon as Abimelech heard that the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem had al gathered there,	47 Abimelec, saputo che gli uomini della torre di Sichem si eran riuniti insieme,
48 he went up Mount Zalmon with al his men. Then taking an axe in his hands, he cut off the branch of atree, picked it up and put it on his shoulder, and said to the men with him, 'Hurry and do what you have seen medo.'	48 salì con tutta la sua gente sul monte Selmon, e, presa, una scure, tagliò un ramo di albero, poi, portandolo sulle spalle, disse ai compagni: « Fate subito quel che mi vedete fare ».
49 Each of his men similarly cut off a branch; then, following Abimelech, they piled the branches over thecrypt and set it on fire over those who were inside; so that al the people in Migdal-Shechem died too, about athousand men and women.	49 ed essi, tagliati a gara i rami degli alberi, seguirono il capitano, e, circondata la fortezza, vi appiccarono il fuoco. Così avvenne che tra il fumo e le fiamme perirono mille persone, uomini e donne, che abitavano nella torre di Sichem.
50 Abimelech then marched on Thebez, besieged it and captured it.	50 Partito di lì, Abimelec andò alla città di Tebes, e, circondatala, l'assediò col suo esercito.
51 In the middle of the town there was a fortified tower in which al the men and women and al theleading men of the town took refuge. They locked the door behind them and climbed up to the roof of the tower.	51 Or gli uomini, le donne e tutti i principali della città si eran rifugiati insieme in una torre elevata che era nel mezzo della città, e, chiusa fortemente la porta, stavano sul tetto della torre a difendersi.
52 Abimelech reached the tower and attacked it. As he was approaching the door of the tower to set it onfire,	52 Abimelec, avanzatosi sotto la torre, combatteva valorosamente, e accostatosi alla porta tentava di appiccarvi il fuoco,
53 a woman threw down a mil stone on his head and cracked his skull.	53 quand'ecco una donna gettare di sopra un pezzo di macina che lo colpì nella testa e gli fracassò il cervello.
54 He instantly cal ed his young armour-bearer and said, 'Draw your sword and kil me, so that it wil notbe said of me that "A woman kil ed him".' His armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.	54 Egli, chiamato subito il suo scudiere, gli disse: « Tira fuori la spada e uccidimi; chè non s'abbia a dire che sono stato ucciso da una donna ». L'altro ubbidì e l'uccise.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they dispersed to their homes.	55 Morto Abimelec, tutti gli uomini d'Israele che eran con lui se ne tornarono a casa.
56 Thus God made to recoil on Abimelech the evil he had done his father by murdering his seventybrothers,	56 Dìo rese ad Abimelec il male che egli aveva fatto contro suo padre, uccidendo i suoi settanta fratelli.
57 and all the evil that the men of Shechem had done God made recoil on their heads too. And so thecurse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came true for them.	57 Così pure ai Sichemiti fu reso ciò che avevan fatto, e cadde sopra di loro la maledizione di loatam figlio di Ierobaal.
