1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal confronted his mother's brothers at Shechem and, to them and to the wholeclan of his maternal grandfather's family, he said,	1 Ekkor Abimelek, Jerobaál fia elment Szíchembe, anyja testvéreihez, és szólt hozzájuk s anyja apai házának egész nemzetségéhez, ezeket mondva:
2 'Please put this question to the leading men of Shechem: Which is better for you: to be ruled by seventypeople -- al Jerubbaal's sons -- or to be ruled by one? Remember too that I am your own flesh and bone.'	2 »Szóljatok Szíchem valamennyi emberéhez: ‘Mi jobb nektek, az-e, hogy hetven ember, Jerobaál valamennyi fia uralkodjon rajtatok, vagy az, hogy egy ember uralkodjon rajtatok? Vegyétek tekintetbe azt is, hogy én csontotok és húsotok vagyok.’« –
3 His mother's brothers said al this on his behalf to al the leading men of Shechem, and their feelingsswayed them to follow Abimelech, since they argued, 'He is our brother.'	3 Anyja testvérei el is mondták róla mindezeket a dolgokat Szíchem valamennyi emberének, s Abimelek felé hajlították azoknak a szívét, mert azt mondták: »Testvérünk ő nekünk!«

5 He then went to his father's house at Ophrah and put his brothers, Jerubbaal's seventy sons, to deathon one and the same stone. Jotham, however, Jerubbaal's youngest son, escaped by going into hiding.	5 Aztán elment Efrába, apja házába, s megölte testvéreit, Jerobaál fiait, a hetven férfit, egy kövön; csak Jótám, Jerobaál legkisebbik fia maradt meg, mert az elrejtőzött.
6 All the leading men of Shechem and al Beth-Mil o then met and proclaimed Abimelech king at the oakof the cultic stone at Shechem.	6 Erre összegyűlt Szíchem minden embere és Milló városának valamennyi családja, és elmentek, s királlyá tették Abimeleket az alatt a tölgyfa alatt, amely Szíchemnél állott.
7 News of this was brought to Jotham. He went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted at thetop of his voice: Hear me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may also hear you!	7 Amikor ezt hírül vitték Jótámnak, ő elment, s megállt a Garizim hegyének tetején és harsány hangon kiáltva így szólt: »Hallgassatok meg, Szíchem emberei, hogy Isten meghallgasson titeket!
8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king to rule them. They said to the olive tree, 'Be our king!'	8 Elmentek a fák, hogy királyt kenjenek föl maguknak. Azt mondták azért az olajfának: ‘Uralkodj rajtunk!’
9 The olive tree replied, 'Must I forgo my oil which gives honour to gods and men, to stand and sway overthe trees?'	9 Az így felelt: ‘Elhagyhatnám-e zsiradékomat, amelyet istenek, emberek élveznek, s elmehetnék-e, hogy a fák között ide-oda mozogjak?’
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and be our king!'	10 Azt mondták erre a fák a fügefának: ‘Gyere, s vedd át közöttünk az uralkodást!’
11 The fig tree replied, 'Must I forgo my sweetness, forgo my excel ent fruit, to go and sway over thetrees?'	11 Az ezt felelte nekik: ‘Elhagyhatnám-e édességemet és pompás gyümölcseimet, s elmehetnék-e, hogy a többi fa között ide-oda mozogjak?’
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and be our king!'	12 Azt mondták erre a fák a szőlőtőnek: ‘Gyere, s uralkodj rajtunk!’
13 The vine replied, 'Must I forgo my wine which cheers gods and men, to go and sway over the trees?'	13 Az ezt felelte nekik: ‘Elhagyhatnám-e boromat, amely Istent és embert felvidít, hogy a többi fa között ide-oda mozogjak?’
14 Then the trees al said to the thorn bush, 'You come and be our king!'	14 Azt mondták erre a fák mindnyájan a galagonyának: ‘Gyere és uralkodj rajtunk!’
15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, 'If you are anointing me in good faith to be your king, come andshelter in my shade. But, if not, fire will come out of the thorn bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 Az ezt felelte nekik: ‘Ha csakugyan királyotokká tesztek, gyertek, s pihenjetek meg árnyékomban; de ha ezt nem akarjátok, jöjjön ki tűz a galagonyából, s eméssze meg a Libanon cédrusait.’
16 'Now then, if you have acted in sincerity and good faith in making Abimelech king, if you have dealthonourably with Jerubbaal and his family, and have treated him as his actions deserved,	16 Nos tehát, ha becsülettel s bűn nélkül tettétek királyotokká Abimeleket, s ha jól cselekedtetek Jerobaállal s házával, s megháláltátok jótéteményeit – ő hadakozott értetek,
17 my father having fought for you, risked his life and rescued you from the power of Midian,	17 s veszélynek tette ki életét, hogy megszabadítson titeket a mádiániták kezéből,
18 and you today having risen up against my father's family, murdered his sons -- seventy of them on oneand the same stone -- and appointed Abimelech, his slave-girl's son, to rule the leading men of Shechem,because he is your brother!-	18 ti pedig most felkeltetek apám háza ellen, s megöltétek fiait, a hetven férfit egy kövön és Abimeleket, az ő rabszolganőjének a fiát tettétek Szíchem lakóinak királyává azért, mert a testvéretek –,
19 if, I say, you have acted in sincerity and good faith towards Jerubbaal and his family, then mayAbimelech be your joy and may you be his!	19 tehát ha becsülettel s vétek nélkül jártatok el Jerobaállal s házával, akkor örüljetek ma Abimeleknek, s ő is örüljön nektek;
20 If not, may fire come out of Abimelech and devour the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o, andfire come out of the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o to devour Abimelech!'	20 ha azonban gonoszul: jöjjön ki tűz belőle, s eméssze meg Szíchem lakóit s Milló városát, s jöjjön ki tűz Szíchem embereiből s Milló városából, s eméssze meg Abimeleket.«
21 Jotham then took to his heels; he fled and made his way to Beer; and there he stayed, to be out of hisbrother Abimelech's reach.	21 Ezt mondta, aztán elfutott, és elment Beerbe. Ott telepedett meg, mert félt fivérétől, Abimelektől.
22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years.	22 Így uralkodott Abimelek Izraelen három esztendeig.
23 God then sent a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders ofShechem betrayed Abimelech.	23 Akkor az Úr gonosz lelket küldött Abimelek és Szíchem lakói közé, s azok elkezdték őt utálni,
24 And this was so that the crime committed against Jerubbaal's seventy sons should be avenged, andtheir blood recoil on their brother Abimelech who had murdered them, and on those leaders of Shechem whohad helped him to murder his brothers.	24 és Jerobaál hetven fia megölésének vétkét és vére ontását Abimelekre, a testvérükre meg a szíchemiek többi főemberére, az ő segítőtársaira hárítani.
25 The leaders of Shechem put men to ambush him on the mountain tops, and these robbed anyonetravel ing their way. Abimelech was told of this.	25 Azért csapdát állítottak neki a hegyek tetején, s amíg odajöttére várakoztak, kirabolták és kifosztották az arra menőket. Ezt hírül vitték Abimeleknek.
26 Gaal son of Obed, with his brothers, happened to pass through Shechem and win the confidence ofthe leaders of Shechem.	26 Ugyanakkor odaérkezett Gaál, Obed fia a testvéreivel együtt, s átment Szíchembe. Ennek eljövetelére nekibátorodtak Szíchem lakói,
27 These went out into the countryside to harvest their vineyards; they trod the grapes and made merryand went into the temple of their god. They ate and drank there and cursed Abimelech.	27 s kimentek a mezőkre, leszüretelték a szőlőket, kipréselték a fürtöket, éneklő karokba oszlottak, s bementek istenük templomába, s ott lakoma s pohár között szidalmazták Abimeleket.
28 Gaal son of Obed said, 'Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, for us to be his slaves? Should notJerubbaal's son and his lieutenant, Zebul, be serving the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we behis slaves?	28 Gaál, Obed fia azt kiáltotta: »Kicsoda Abimelek és micsoda Szíchem, hogy szolgáljunk neki? Nemde Jerobaál fia és Zebult, a szolgáját, nevezte ki helytartónak Emor, Szíchem atyjának emberei fölé? Miért szolgáljunk tehát neki?
29 Who wil put this people under my command, so that I can expel Abimelech? I should say to him,"Reinforce your army and come out!" '	29 Csak adná valaki kezem alá e népet, hogy eltávolíthatnám Abimeleket. Erre megüzenték Abimeleknek: Gyűjts hatalmas sereget és jöjj.«
30 Zebul the governor of the town was told what Gaal son of Obed had said, and he was furious.	30 Amikor ugyanis Zebul, a város kapitánya Gaálnak, Obed fiának beszédeit meghallotta, igen megharagudott,
31 He sent messengers secretly to Abimelech to say, 'Look! Gaal son of Obed has come to Shechemwith his brothers, and they are stirring up the town against you.	31 s titkon követeket küldött Abimelekhez ezzel az üzenettel: »Íme, Gaál, Obed fia Szíchembe jött a testvéreivel és harcra tüzeli ellened a várost.
32 So, move under cover of dark, you and the men you have with you, and take up concealed positions inthe countryside;	32 Éppen azért kerekedj fel az éjszaka a veled levő néppel együtt, és állj lesben a mezőn,
33 then in the morning at sunrise, break cover and rush on the town. When Gaal and his supporters comeout to meet you, treat them as occasion offers.'	33 kora reggel, napkeltekor pedig ronts a városra, s amikor ő kivonul ellened népével, tegyél vele azt, amit csak bírsz.«
34 So Abimelech set off under cover of dark with al his own supporters and took up concealed positionsover against Shechem, in four groups.	34 Erre Abimelek éjjel egész seregével együtt felkerekedett és Szíchem mellett négy helyen csapatokat helyezett lesbe.
35 As Gaal son of Obed was coming out and pausing at the entrance of the town gate, Abimelech and hissupporters rose from their ambush.	35 Amikor aztán Gaál, Obed fia kijött és megállt a város kapujának bejárójában, Abimelek s az egész vele levő sereg felkelt a leshelyről.
36 Gaal saw these men and said to Zebul, 'Look, there are men coming down from the tops of themountains!' Zebul answered, 'You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.'	36 Amikor Gaál a népet meglátta, azt mondta Zebulnak: »Íme, valami sereg ereszkedik le a hegyekről!« Az így felelt neki: »A hegyek árnyékát nézed te emberi fejeknek, az téveszt meg téged!«
37 But Gaal insisted, 'Look, there are men coming down from the Navel of the Earth and another group iscoming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.'	37 Ám Gaál ismét szólt: »Íme, valami nép ereszkedik alá a táj köldökéről, s egy csapat jön azon az úton, amely a tölgyfára néz.«
38 Zebul then said, 'Where are your mouthings now about "Who is Abimelech, for us to be his slaves?"Are not these the men you made light of? Sally out, then, and fight him.'	38 Azt mondta ekkor neki Zebul: »Hol van most a szád, amellyel azt mondtad: ‘Kicsoda Abimelek, hogy szolgáljunk neki?’ Nemde ez az a nép, amelyet becsméreltél? Eredj ki, s kelj harcra vele!«
39 Gaal sal ied out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and engaged Abimelech.	39 Ki is vonult Gaál, a szíchemiek népének láttára, s harcra kelt Abimelekkel,
40 Abimelech drove Gaal off, who turned tail, many of his men falling dead before they could reach thegate.	40 de megfutamodott, s az üldözőbe vette és bekergette a városba, miközben a város kapujáig igen sokan elestek Gaál részéről.
41 Abimelech then stayed at Aruma, and Zebul expelled Gaal and his brothers and prevented them fromliving in Shechem.	41 Aztán Abimelek Rúmában helyezkedett el, Zebul pedig kiűzte Gaált s társait a városból, s nem tűrte, hogy ott tartózkodjanak.
42 Next day, when the people went out into the countryside, Abimelech was told of this.	42 Másnap aztán kiment a nép a mezőre. Amikor ezt hírül vitték Abimeleknek,
43 He took his men, divided them into three groups and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the peopleleaving the town, he bore down on them and slaughtered them.	43 ő vette seregét, három csapatra osztotta és lesben állt a mezőn. Amint aztán meglátta, hogy a nép kijött a városból, felkelt és rájuk rontott;
44 While Abimelech and his group rushed forward and took position at the entrance to the town gate, thetwo other groups fel on everyone in the fields and slaughtered them.	44 a maga csapatával ostrom alá vette és körülfogta a várost, a másik két csapat pedig a mezőn kószáló ellenség után nyomult.
45 Al that day Abimelech attacked the town. He stormed it and slaughtered the people inside, razed thetown and sowed it with salt.	45 Abimelek egész nap ostromolta a várost, végül pedig bevette, lakosait leölte, magát a várost pedig lerombolta, és sót hintett rá.
46 On hearing this, al the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem took refuge in the crypt of the temple ofEl-Berith.	46 Amikor ezt a szíchemiek tornyának lakói meghallották, bementek Berít istenük templomába, oda, ahol a szövetséget kötötték vele, amiről a hely a nevét is kapta; ez ugyanis igen meg volt erősítve.
47 As soon as Abimelech heard that the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem had al gathered there,	47 Amint Abimelek meghallotta, hogy a szíchemiek tornyának emberei mind odagyűltek,
48 he went up Mount Zalmon with al his men. Then taking an axe in his hands, he cut off the branch of atree, picked it up and put it on his shoulder, and said to the men with him, 'Hurry and do what you have seen medo.'	48 felment egész népével együtt a Szelmon hegyére, fejszét ragadott, levágott egy faágat, a vállára tette, elvitte és azt mondta társainak: »Amit láttok, hogy én cselekszem, cselekedjétek gyorsan ti is!«
49 Each of his men similarly cut off a branch; then, following Abimelech, they piled the branches over thecrypt and set it on fire over those who were inside; so that al the people in Migdal-Shechem died too, about athousand men and women.	49 Erre azok is gyorsan egy-egy faágat vágtak és követték a vezért, majd körülrakták és felgyújtották a várat, és így az történt, hogy a füst és a tűz megölt mintegy ezer embert, minden férfit és asszonyt, aki Szíchem tornyának lakója volt.
50 Abimelech then marched on Thebez, besieged it and captured it.	50 Aztán elindult onnan Abimelek és Tebesz városához ment, s azt körülvette és megszállta hadával.
51 In the middle of the town there was a fortified tower in which al the men and women and al theleading men of the town took refuge. They locked the door behind them and climbed up to the roof of the tower.	51 A város közepén azonban egy magas torony volt, s abba menekült minden férfi és asszony s a város minden főembere; jó erősen bezárták az ajtót, s a torony tetejére, a bástyákra álltak.
52 Abimelech reached the tower and attacked it. As he was approaching the door of the tower to set it onfire,	52 Ezért Abimelek a toronyhoz vonult és erős ostrom alá vette. Megközelítette az ajtót, s arra törekedett, hogy tüzet tegyen alá.
53 a woman threw down a mil stone on his head and cracked his skull.	53 Ekkor, íme, fölülről egy asszony lehajított egy malomkődarabot, s eltalálta Abimelek fejét és bezúzta koponyáját.
54 He instantly cal ed his young armour-bearer and said, 'Draw your sword and kil me, so that it wil notbe said of me that "A woman kil ed him".' His armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.	54 Erre ő gyorsan odahívta fegyverhordozóját, s azt mondta neki: »Rántsd ki kardodat, s ölj meg, hogy azt ne találják mondani, hogy asszony ölt meg engem.« Az teljesítette a parancsot, s megölte.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they dispersed to their homes.	55 Miután meghalt, mindazok, akik vele voltak Izraelből, visszatértek lakóhelyükre.
56 Thus God made to recoil on Abimelech the evil he had done his father by murdering his seventybrothers,	56 Így torolta meg Isten azt a gonoszságot, amelyet Abimelek az apja ellen elkövetett, amikor megölte hetven testvérét;
57 and all the evil that the men of Shechem had done God made recoil on their heads too. And so thecurse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came true for them.	57 a szíchemieknek is megfizetett azért, amit tettek, s így teljesedett rajtuk Jótámnak, Jerobaál fiának átka.
