1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal confronted his mother's brothers at Shechem and, to them and to the wholeclan of his maternal grandfather's family, he said,	1 Abimèlech, figlio di Ierub-Baal, andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre e si incontrò con loro e con tutto il clan della famiglia di sua madre. 2 'Please put this question to the leading men of Shechem: Which is better for you: to be ruled by seventypeople -- al Jerubbaal's sons -- or to be ruled by one? 3 His mother's brothers said al this on his behalf to al the leading men of Shechem, and their feelingsswayed them to follow Abimelech, since they argued, 'He is our brother.'	3 I fratelli di sua madre parlarono così di Abimèlech a tutti i signori di Sichem e il loro cuore fu per Abimèlech, perché pensavano che era della loro stirpe.

7 News of this was brought to Jotham. 9 The olive tree replied, 'Must I forgo my oil which gives honour to gods and men, to stand and sway overthe trees?'	9 Rispose loro l'ulivo: "Dovrò forse rinunciare al mio olio, col quale si rende onore agli uomini e agli dèi, per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli altri alberi?".
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and be our king!'	10 Allora gli alberi dissero al fico: "Vieni tu a regnare sopra di noi!".
11 The fig tree replied, 'Must I forgo my sweetness, forgo my excel ent fruit, to go and sway over thetrees?'	11 Rispose loro il fico: "Dovrò forse rinunciare alla mia dolcezza, ai miei ottimi frutti, per andarmi ad agitare al di sopra degli altri alberi?".
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and be our king!'	12 Allora gli alberi dissero alla vite: "Vieni tu a regnare sopra di noi!".
13 The vine replied, 'Must I forgo my wine which cheers gods and men, to go and sway over the trees?'	13 Rispose loro la vite: "Dovrò forse rinunciare al mio mosto, che dà gioia agli dèi e agli uomini, per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli altri alberi?".
14 Then the trees al said to the thorn bush, 'You come and be our king!'	14 Allora gli alberi, tutti insieme dissero al rovo: "Vieni tu a regnare sopra di noi!".
15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, 'If you are anointing me in good faith to be your king, come andshelter in my shade. But, if not, fire will come out of the thorn bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 Rispose il rovo agli alberi: "Se avete davvero l'intenzione di eleggere me vostro sovrano, venite a ripararvi alla mia ombra. Altrimenti, un fuoco uscirà dal rovo, e divorerà i cedri del Libano!".
16 'Now then, if you have acted in sincerity and good faith in making Abimelech king, if you have dealthonourably with Jerubbaal and his family, and have treated him as his actions deserved,	16 "E ora, nell'eleggere re Abimèlech, è chiaro che non avete agito con lealtà e rettitudine; è chiaro che non avete agito bene nei riguardi di Ierub-Baal e della sua famiglia; è chiaro che non avete agito nei suoi riguardi come meritavano le sue imprese.
17 my father having fought for you, risked his life and rescued you from the power of Midian,	17 Mio padre per voi ha combattuto, ha messo a repentaglio la sua vita, vi ha liberato dalle mani di Madian.
18 and you today having risen up against my father's family, murdered his sons -- seventy of them on oneand the same stone -- and appointed Abimelech, his slave-girl's son, to rule the leading men of Shechem,because he is your brother!-	18 E voi oggi avete osato sollevarvi contro la casa di mio padre, uccidendo i suoi figli -- erano settanta! -- su di un masso; e poi avete fatto re dei signori di Sichem Abimèlech, figlio di una serva di mio padre, per il solo motivo che è della vostra gente.

22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years.	22 Abimèlech tenne il potere su Israele per tre anni.
23 God then sent a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders ofShechem betrayed Abimelech.	23 Poi il Signore mandò uno spirito malvagio fra Abimèlech e i signori di Sichem, i quali si ribellarono contro di lui,
24 And this was so that the crime committed against Jerubbaal's seventy sons should be avenged, andtheir blood recoil on their brother Abimelech who had murdered them, and on those leaders of Shechem whohad helped him to murder his brothers.	24 facendo ricadere la violenza perpetrata contro i settanta figli di Ierub-Baal e il loro sangue su Abimèlech, che era loro fratello e li aveva uccisi, e sui signori di Sichem che lo avevano incoraggiato a uccidere i suoi fratelli.
25 The leaders of Shechem put men to ambush him on the mountain tops, and these robbed anyonetravel ing their way. 26 Gaal son of Obed, with his brothers, happened to pass through Shechem and win the confidence ofthe leaders of Shechem.	26 Intanto giungeva a Sichem, insieme ai suoi fratelli, un certo Gaal, figlio di Obed, il quale riuscì a guadagnarsi la fiducia dei signori di Sichem.
27 These went out into the countryside to harvest their vineyards; they trod the grapes and made merryand went into the temple of their god. They ate and drank there and cursed Abimelech.	27 Un giorno i Sichemiti uscirono dalla città per vendemmiare e preparare il mosto; poi fecero una gran festa nel tempio del loro dio, mangiando e bevendo: in questa occasione maledissero Abimèlech.
28 Gaal son of Obed said, 'Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, for us to be his slaves? Should notJerubbaal's son and his lieutenant, Zebul, be serving the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we behis slaves?	28 Gaal, figlio di Obed, tenne ai Sichemiti questo discorso: "Chi è Abimèlech e chi sono i Sichemiti, perché gli dobbiamo stare sottomessi? Egli è figlio di Ierub-Baal e Zebul governa la città per lui. E pensare che in passato furono loro sottomessi alla gente di Camor, il capostipite dei Sichemiti!
29 Who wil put this people under my command, so that I can expel Abimelech? I should say to him,"Reinforce your army and come out!" '	29 Perché dunque restargli sottomessi? Ma se questo popolo si porrà ai miei ordini, io caccerò Abimèlech. Gli dirò: "E' grande il tuo esercito; esci a battaglia!".
30 Zebul the governor of the town was told what Gaal son of Obed had said, and he was furious.	30 Quando Zebul, il governatore della città, seppe del discorso di Gaal, figlio di Obed, si sdegnò
31 He sent messengers secretly to Abimelech to say, 'Look! Gaal son of Obed has come to Shechemwith his brothers, and they are stirring up the town against you.	31 e mandò messi ad Abimèlech, ad Aruma, con questo messaggio: "Gaal, figlio di Obed, e i suoi fratelli sono arrivati a Sichem e sono di fatto padroni della città per staccarla da te.
32 So, move under cover of dark, you and the men you have with you, and take up concealed positions inthe countryside;	32 Muoviti di notte tu e la gente che hai con te e va' a metterti all'agguato fuori della città.
33 then in the morning at sunrise, break cover and rush on the town. When Gaal and his supporters comeout to meet you, treat them as occasion offers.'	33 Domattina, quando si leverà il sole, muoviti presto e attacca la città all'improvviso: allora costui ti uscirà incontro coi suoi uomini e tu farai di lui secondo quello che ti riuscirà".
34 So Abimelech set off under cover of dark with al his own supporters and took up concealed positionsover against Shechem, in four groups.	34 Abimèlech si mosse di notte con tutta la gente che aveva e, divisi i suoi uomini in quattro gruppi, andò ad appostarsi nelle immediate vicinanze di Sichem.
35 As Gaal son of Obed was coming out and pausing at the entrance of the town gate, Abimelech and hissupporters rose from their ambush.	35 Gaal, figlio di Obed, uscì dalla città e schierò i suoi uomini davanti alla porta. Allora Abimèlech e i suoi uomini uscirono fuori dal luogo dove erano appostati.
36 Gaal saw these men and said to Zebul, 'Look, there are men coming down from the tops of themountains!' Zebul answered, 'You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.'	36 Quando Gaal li scorse, disse a Zebul: "Vedo gente che scende dall'alto dei colli". Ma Zebul gli rispose: "E' l'ombra dei colli che scambi per uomini!".
37 But Gaal insisted, 'Look, there are men coming down from the Navel of the Earth and another group iscoming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.'	37 Gaal insisteva: "Vedo uomini che calano dall'"Ombelico della terra", e un'altra colonna arriva dalla strada della "Quercia degli indovini".
38 Zebul then said, 'Where are your mouthings now about "Who is Abimelech, for us to be his slaves?"Are not these the men you made light of? Sally out, then, and fight him.'	38 "Dov'è mai andato a finire, esclamò allora Zebul, quello che andavi dicendo: "Chi è Abimèlech che gli si debba servire!?". E' questa la gente che disprezzavi. Avanti, dunque, combatti contro di essa".
39 Gaal sal ied out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and engaged Abimelech.	39 Gaal, alla testa dei signori di Sichem, dette battaglia ad Abimèlech;
40 Abimelech drove Gaal off, who turned tail, many of his men falling dead before they could reach thegate.	40 ma fu messo in fuga. Molti caddero morti prima di raggiungere la porta della città.
41 Abimelech then stayed at Aruma, and Zebul expelled Gaal and his brothers and prevented them fromliving in Shechem.	41 Poi Abimèlech tornò ad Aruma, mentre Zebul inseguiva Gaal e i suoi fratelli per impedir loro di restare a Sichem.
42 Next day, when the people went out into the countryside, Abimelech was told of this.	42 Nonostante ciò, il giorno dopo i Sichemiti uscirono di nuovo dalla città e la decisione fu riferita ad Abimèlech.
43 He took his men, divided them into three groups and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the peopleleaving the town, he bore down on them and slaughtered them.	43 Egli prese i suoi uomini e, divisili in tre gruppi, andò ad appostarsi fuori della città. 44 While Abimelech and his group rushed forward and took position at the entrance to the town gate, thetwo other groups fel on everyone in the fields and slaughtered them.	44 Allora Abimèlech col suo gruppo si precipitò avanti e andò a schierarsi davanti alla porta della città, mentre gli altri due gruppi assalivano i Sichemiti che si trovavano in aperta campagna e li massacravano.
45 Al that day Abimelech attacked the town. He stormed it and slaughtered the people inside, razed thetown and sowed it with salt.	45 Abimèlech continuò l'assalto alla città per tutta la giornata, finché non riuscì ad espugnarla. Ne uccise gli abitanti e la distrusse, spargendovi sopra il sale.
46 On hearing this, al the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem took refuge in the crypt of the temple ofEl-Berith.	46 Quando i signori della rocca di Sichem si resero conto delle intenzioni di Abimèlech, si rifugiarono nella cripta del tempio di El-Berit.
47 As soon as Abimelech heard that the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem had al gathered there,	47 Abimèlech, appena seppe che i signori della rocca di Sichem si erano raccolti tutti insieme,
48 he went up Mount Zalmon with al his men. Then taking an axe in his hands, he cut off the branch of atree, picked it up and put it on his shoulder, and said to the men with him, 'Hurry and do what you have seen medo.'	48 salì sul monte Salmon insieme agli uomini che aveva con sé; qui, impugnata la scure, Abimèlech tagliò il ramo di un albero e, caricatoselo sulle spalle, ordinò ai suoi uomini di fare rapidamente quanto avevano visto fare a lui.
49 Each of his men similarly cut off a branch; then, following Abimelech, they piled the branches over thecrypt and set it on fire over those who were inside; so that al the people in Migdal-Shechem died too, about athousand men and women.	49 Allora anche tutti i suoi uomini tagliarono ciascuno un ramo; poi, seguendo Abimèlech, andarono a deporre i rami sopra la cripta e la incendiarono, lasciandovi bruciare tutti quelli che vi erano dentro: tutti gli abitanti della rocca morirono in numero di circa mille, fra uomini e donne.
50 Abimelech then marched on Thebez, besieged it and captured it.	50 Poi Abimèlech andò ad assediare Tebes e la espugnò.
51 In the middle of the town there was a fortified tower in which al the men and women and al theleading men of the town took refuge. They locked the door behind them and climbed up to the roof of the tower.	51 V'era in mezzo alla città una rocca possente, dove si erano rifugiati tutti, uomini e donne, con i signori della città. Barricatisi dentro, erano saliti sugli spalti.
52 Abimelech reached the tower and attacked it. As he was approaching the door of the tower to set it onfire,	52 Abimèlech, appena giunto ai piedi della rocca, ne cominciò l'assalto, riuscendo a spingersi fino alla porta che voleva incendiare.
53 a woman threw down a mil stone on his head and cracked his skull.	53 Ma una donna gli gettò sulla testa una macina da mulino, fracassandogli il cranio.
54 He instantly cal ed his young armour-bearer and said, 'Draw your sword and kil me, so that it wil notbe said of me that "A woman kil ed him".' His armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.	54 Subito Abimèlech, chiamato il suo scudiero, gli ordinò di sguainare la spada e di finirlo, perché non si dicesse che era morto per mano di una donna. 55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they dispersed to their homes.	55 Quando gli uomini di Israele videro che Abimèlech era morto, se ne tornarono ciascuno al suo paese.
56 Thus God made to recoil on Abimelech the evil he had done his father by murdering his seventybrothers,	56 Dio fece così ricadere su Abimèlech il male che aveva commesso contro suo padre, quando uccise i suoi settanta fratelli,
57 and all the evil that the men of Shechem had done God made recoil on their heads too. And so thecurse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came true for them.	57 e ugualmente fece ricadere sui Sichemiti tutto il male da loro compiuto: era caduta sopra di loro la maledizione di Iotam, figlio di Ierub-Baal.
