1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars	1 Ось ті народи, що Господь зоставив, щоб випробувати ними Ізраїля, тобто всіх тих, що не знали ніяких воєн за Ханаан,
2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):	2 та щоб навчались воювати покоління синів Ізраїля, які перше війни не знали:
3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.	3 п’ять князів філістимлянських, усі ханааняни, сидонії і хіввії, що жили на Ливан-горі, від Ваал-Хермон-гори до входу в Хамат.
4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.	4 Зостались вони на те, щоб випробовувати ними Ізраїля, щоб довідатись, чи слухатимуться заповідей Господніх, які заповідав був батькам їхнім через Мойсея.
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;	5 Тому й жили сини Ізраїля серед ханаанян, хеттитів, аморіїв, перізіїв, хіввіїв та євусіїв.
6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.	6 Брали за себе їхніх дочок і віддавали своїх дочок за їхніх синів, і їхнім богам служили.
7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.	7 Сини Ізраїля вчинили, що Господеві було не довподоби, й забули Господа, Бога свого, й служили Ваалові та Астарті.
8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.	8 От і запалав гнів Господній на Ізраїля, й він віддав їх у руки Кушан-Рішатаїмові, цареві Арам-Нагараїму, і сини Ізраїля служили Кушан-Рішатаїмові вісім років.
9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Коли ж сини Ізраїля закликали до Господа, Господь дав їм спасителя, Отнієла, сина Кеназа, сина меншого брата Калевового, і він врятував їх.
10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.	10 Зійшов на нього дух Господній, і він правив Ізраїлем; він вийшов у похід, і віддав Господь йому в руки Кушан-Рішатаїма, царя арамського, і він запанував над Кушан-Рішатаїмом.
11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.	11 І край зазнав сорок років спокою. І вмер Отнієл, син Кеназа.
12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.	12 Після того ж сини Ізраїля знову вчинили те, що було не довподоби Господеві. Тоді Господь дав перевагу Еглонові, цареві моавському, над Ізраїлем, бо вони витворяли зло перед Господом.
13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.	13 Зібрав Еглон до себе аммоніїв та амалекитян, вирушив у похід і побив Ізраїля, та й зайняв Пальмове місто.
14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.	14 І служили ізраїльтяни Еглонові, моавському цареві, вісімдесять років.
15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.	15 Закликали тоді. сини Ізраїля до Господа, й Господь дав їм спасителя, Егуда, сина Гери, веніяминянина, лівака. Через нього то послали сини Ізраїля данину Еглонові, моавському цареві.
16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.	16 Зробив собі Егуд меча з двома лезами, лікоть завдовжки, і підперезав його собі під одежею, на правому боці.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.	17 От і приніс він Еглонові, моавському цареві, данину. Еглон був же вельми гладкий.
18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;	18 Віддавши данину, він відослав людей, що її принесли,
19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.	19 а сам повернувсь назад від каменоломів, що біля Гілгалу, та й каже: «Є в мене до тебе, царю, таємне слово.» Той повелів: «Цитьте!» І вийшли всі від нього, що стояли коло нього.
20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.	20 І як наблизився Егуд до нього, він сидів у прохолодній горниці, що була для нього одного. Егуд і каже: «Маю Боже слово до тебе.» Той підвівсь із свого крісла.
21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.	21 Тоді Егуд, простягнувши ліву руку, вхопив меча по правім боці в себе, та й всадив йому в живіт
22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.	22 так, що за лезом ввійшло й держало, і жир зімкнувся вколо леза, тож він не витяг меча з його живота.
23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.	23 Вийшов тоді Егуд у сіни, зачинив двері горниці й засунув засувом за собою.
24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'	24 Як же він вийшов, прийшли царські слуги й дивляться — аж ось двері горниці засунено, та й кажуть: «Певне він залагоджує свою потребу в кутку прохолодної кімнати.»
25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.	25 Ждали вони, ждали, аж ніяково їм стало. А він усе не відчиняв дверей горниці. Тоді взяли ключа, відомкнули, — аж пан їхній лежить мертвий.
26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.	26 Поки ж вони збентежені метушились, Егуд утік, і пройшовши повз каменоломи, врятувався в Сеїрі.
27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.	27 Прибувши ж сюди, засурмив на Ефраїм-горах, і спустились сини Ізраїля з ним із гір, а він поперед них.
28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.	28 І промовив він до них: «Ходіть за мною, бо Господь дав ваших ворогів моавитян вам у руки!» І пішли вони за ним та й зайняли у Моава йорданські броди й не пускали нікого перейти.
29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.	29 Побили вони коло десять тисяч моавитян, що були всі сильні, всі здорові люди; ніхто з них не втік.
30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.	30 Мусіли тоді моавитяни скоритись під руку Ізраїля, і був мир у краю вісімдесят років.
31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.	31 Після нього настав був Шамгар, син Аната: цей побив рожном шістсот філістимлян. Він також спас Ізраїля.
