1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars	1 Queste sono le popolazioni che il Signore lasciò per porre alla prova, per mezzo di loro, tutti quegli Israeliti che non avevano conosciuto le guerre combattute contro i Cananei.
2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):	2 Egli fece questo solo allo scopo di ammaestrare quelle generazioni d'Israeliti che non avevano preso parte alle guerre contro i Cananei, per insegnare loro a combattere.
3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.	3 Erano i cinque prìncipi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni, gli Evei che abitavano sulle montagne del Libano, dal monte di Baal-Ermon fino all'ingresso di Camat.
4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.	4 Queste popolazioni restarono per mettere alla prova gli Israeliti, per vedere se essi avrebbero osservato i comandamenti che il Signore aveva dato ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;	5 Così gli Israeliti restarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Hittiti, agli Amorrei, ai Perizziti, agli Evei e ai Gebusei;
6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.	6 presero in moglie le loro figlie, dettero le proprie in moglie ai loro figli e prestarono culto ai loro dèi.
7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.	7 Gli Israeliti fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; dimenticarono il Signore, loro Dio, e servirono i Baal e le Asere.
8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.	8 Perciò l'ira del Signore si accese contro Israele e lo mise nelle mani di Cusan-Risataim, re del Paese dei due fiumi. 9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Poi gli Israeliti alzarono il loro grido al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore che li liberò: fu Otniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb.
10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.	10 Lo spirito del Signore fu sopra di lui, cosicché egli poté salvare Israele: quando Otniel si mosse per combattere, il Signore dette nelle sue mani Cusan-Risataim, re di Aram, che fu vinto.
11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.	11 La regione ebbe pace per quarant'anni, fin quando morì Otniel, figlio di Kenaz.
12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.	12 Ma gli Israeliti continuarono a commettere ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; perciò questi rese Eglon, re di Moab, più potente d'Israele, perché Israele aveva commesso ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore.

15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.	15 Poi gli Israeliti alzarono il loro grido al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore: Eud, figlio di Ghera, della tribù di Beniamino, che era ambidestro. Gli Israeliti inviarono per mezzo suo il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab.
16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.	16 Eud si fece una spada a due tagli lunga un cubito, che nascose sotto la veste, sul fianco destro.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.	17 Consegnò poi il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab, che era uomo molto pingue.
18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;	18 Quando Eud ebbe consegnato il tributo, congedò i portatori
19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.	19 ed egli tornò indietro dal luogo detto Idoli, che è presso Gàlgala, e fece dire al re che aveva un segreto per lui. 20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.	20 Eud si accostò allora al re che si trovava nella stanza di riposo al piano superiore, dove stava solo. Gli disse Eud: "Ho una parola di Dio per te". L'altro allora si alzò da sedere;
21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.	21 Eud, portata la mano sinistra al fianco destro, sguainò la spada e la conficcò nel ventre del re.
22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.	22 Dietro alla lama vi penetrò anche l'elsa e il grasso si richiuse dietro alla lama, perché Eud non ritrasse la spada dal ventre del re. La lama forò gli intestini.
23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.	23 Eud uscì nel portico, dopo aver chiuso dietro di sé le porte della stanza, mettendo il chiavistello.
24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'	24 Quando egli fu uscito, i servi del re si accostarono alla stanza di riposo e vedendo che le porte erano serrate, pensarono che il re stesse coprendosi i piedi nella stanza di riposo
25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.	25 e attesero fino ad essere presi dal senso del disagio, ma nessuno aveva il coraggio di aprire le porte della stanza. Infine presero la chiave e aprirono: il loro signore giaceva a terra morto.
26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.	26 Mentre i servi aspettavano, Eud era fuggito. Si mise in salvo a Seira passando dagli Idoli.
27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.	27 Quando egli giunse fra le montagne di Efraim, suonò il corno: gli Israeliti scesero dai monti per unirsi a lui, che si mise alla loro testa.
28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.	28 Disse loro: "Seguitemi; ché il Signore darà in mano vostra i Moabiti, i vostri nemici". Si mossero ai suoi ordini, occuparono i guadi del Giordano che appartenevano ai Moabiti e non fecero passare nessuno.
29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.	29 In quell'occasione gli Israeliti sconfissero i Moabiti, uccidendo circa diecimila uomini, tutti forti e valorosi senza che ne sfuggisse alcuno.
30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.	30 Quel giorno Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano di Israele. La regione ebbe pace per ottant'anni.
31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.	31 Dopo di lui ci fu Samgar, figlio di Anat, il quale sconfisse i Filistei uccidendone seicento con un pungolo da buoi. Anche Samgar salvò Israele.
