1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars	1 Queste son le nazioni lasciate dal Signore, affin di disciplinare per mezzo di esse Israele, cioè tutti quelli che non sapevan nulla delle guerre de' Cananei:
2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):	2 Affinchè in appresso imparassero i loro figliuoli a combattere co' nemici, e ad avvezzarsi al maneggio dell'armi:
3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.	3 Cinque satrapi de' Filistei, tutti i Cananei, e Sidonii, ed Hevei, che abitavan sul monte Libano dal monte di Baal-Hermon fino all'ingresso di Emath.
4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.	4 E il Signore li lasciò per provare per mezzo di essi Israele, se fosse obbediente, o no, a' comandamenti intimati dal Signore a' padri loro per mezzo di Mosè.
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;	5 Gl'Israeliti pertanto abitarono in mezzo a' Cananei, e agli Hethei, e Amorrhei, e Pherezei, ed Hevei, e Jebusei:
6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.	6 E sposaron delle loro figliuole e maritaron le proprie figlie co' loro figliuoli, e servirono a' loro dei.
7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.	7 E fecero il male al cospetto del Signore, e si dimenticarono del loro Dio, servendo a Baal, e ad Astaroth.
8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.	8 E il Signore irato contro Israele li diede in potere di Chusan Rasathaim re della Mesopotamia, e a lui furon soggetti per otto anni.
9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 E alzaron le loro grida verso il Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore che gli liberò, vale a dire Othoniel figliuolo di Cenez, fratello minore di Caleb.
10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.	10 E fu in lui lo Spirito del Signore, e giudicò Israele. E andò, e diede battaglia, e il Signore diede in suo potere Chusan Rasathaim re della Siria, e lo debellò.
11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.	11 E il paese ebbe riposo di quarant'anni, e Othoniel figliuolo di Cenez morì.
12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.	12 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele ricominciarono a fare il male nel cospetto del Signore, il quale diede forze contro di loro ad Eglon re di Moab: perchè essi avean peccato nel cospetto di lui.
13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.	13 E unì con lui i figliuoli di Ammon e di Amalec: ed egli si mosse, e mise in rotta Israele, e s'impadronì della città delle palme.
14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.	14 E i figliuoli d’Israele furon soggetti ad Eglon re di Moab per diciotto anni.
15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.	15 E di poi alzaron le grida al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore per nome Aod, figliuolo di Gera, figliuolo di Jemini, il quale si serviva della man sinistra come della destra. E i figliuoli d'Israele mandarono per mezzo di lui de’ regali ad Eglon di Moab.
16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.	16 Egli si fece un pugnale a due tagli colla sua guardia lungo come la palma della mano e lo mise sotto la sua casacca al fianco destro.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.	17 E presentò i regali ad Eglon re di Moab. Or Eglon era grasso fuor di modo.
18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;	18 E offerti che ebbe a lui i regali, Aod andò dietro ai compagni che eran venuti con lui.
19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.	19 E poi tornò da Galgala, dove erano gl’idoli, e disse al re: Io ho da parlarti in segreto, o re. Ed egli li fe' segno di tacere: e ritiratisi tutti quelli che eran con lui,
20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.	20 Aod se gli appressò, e stando quegli solo in una camera da estate gli disse: Io porto a te una parola di Dio. E quegli subitamente si alzò dal trono:
21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.	21 Ma Aod stese la man sinistra, e preso il pugnale dal suo destro lato, lo ficcò a lui nel ventre
22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.	22 Con tanta forza che la guardia penetrò dietro al ferro nella ferita, e vi rimase coperta nella eccessiva pinguedine. Ed egli non tirò fuori il pugnale, ma dato che ebbe il colpo, lasciollo fitto nel ventre: e subito per le segrete vie naturali si sgravò il corpo de' suoi escrementi.
23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.	23 Ma Aod, chiuse a chiave con tutta sollecitudine le porte della camera,
24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'	24 Uscì per la porta di dietro. E venuti i servi del re vider chiuse le porte della camera, e dissero: Forse egli soddisfa a qualche bisogno naturale nella camera d'estate:
25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.	25 Ma avendo lungamente aspettato, nè sapendo più che pensare, veggendo come nissuno apriva, preser la chiave, e aperto che ebbero, trovarono il loro signore giacente per terra morto.
26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.	26 Ma in mezzo al loro turbamento Aod se ne fuggì, e passò pel luogo degl'idoli, di dove avea dato volta indietro. E arrivò a Seirath:
27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.	27 E immediatamente diede fiato alla tromba sul monte Ephraim; e scesero con lui i figliuoli d'Israele, andando egli innanzi a loro.
28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.	28 E disse loro: Seguitemi; imperocché il Signore ha dati in nostro potere i nostri nemici i Moabiti. E quegli andarono dietro a lui, e occuparono i guadi del Giordano, per dove si passa a Moab, e non lasciarono che alcun passasse.
29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.	29 Ma uccisero in quel tempo circa dieci mila Moabiti, tutti gente robusta, e valorosa: nissuno di essi potè scamparla.
30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.	30 E fu umiliato in quel giorno Moab sotto il braccio d’Israele: e il paese ebbe riposo per ottant'anni.
31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.	31 Dopo Aod fu Samgar figliuolo di Anath, il quale uccise secento uomini Filistei con un vomere: ed egli pure fu il difensor d'Israele.
