1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars	1 Ecco le genti che il Signore lasciò allo scopo d'istruire per mezzo di esse Israele e tutti quelli che non avevan conosciute le guerre dei Cananei,
2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):	2 perchè poi i loro figli imparassero a combattere coi nemici e fossero abituati alla guerra:
3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.	3 cinque satrapi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni, e gli Evei che abitavano sul monte Libano, dal monte di Baal Ermon sino all'entrata di Emat.
4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.	4 Questi li lasciò per provare per mezzo di essi se Israele ascoltasse o no i comandamenti che il Signore aveva prescritti ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;	5 Pertanto i figli d'Israele abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Etei, agli Amorrei, ai Ferezei, agli Evei ed ai Gebusei;
6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.	6 presero per mogli le loro figlie ed essi stessi diedero le proprie figliole per mogli ai figli di loro e servirono ai loro dèi.
7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.	7 I figli d'Israele fecero il male al cospetto del Signore e, dimenticandosi del loro Dio, servirono a Baalim e Astarot.
8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.	8 E il Signore, adiratosi contro di loro, li diede nelle mani di Cusan Rasataim, re della Mesopotamia, al quale servirono otto anni.
9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Essi però gridarono al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore a liberarli, Otoniel figlio di Cenez, fratello minore di Caleb.
10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.	10 Lo spirito del Signore fu in lui, giudicò Israele, e, uscito fuori in battaglia, avendogli il Signore dato nelle mani Cusan Rasataim, re della Siria, egli lo soggiogò.
11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.	11 Il paese ebbe riposo per quarant'anni. E Otoniel figlio di Cenez morì.
12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.	12 I figli d'Israele fecero di nuovo il male nel cospetto del Signore, il quale, perchè essi avevan fatto il male nel suo cospetto, rese potente contro di loro Eglon re di Moab.
13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.	13 Questi, unitosi ai figli di Ammon e di Amalec, sconfìsse Israele ed occupò la città delle palme,
14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.	14 i figli d'Israele servirono a Eglon re di Moab per diciotto anni.
15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.	15 Ma poi gridarono al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore chiamato Aod, figlio di Cera, figlio di Iemini, che si serviva della mano sinistra come della destra. I figli d'Israele mandarono per mezzo di lui dei regali ad Eglon re di Moab.
16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.	16 Aod, procuratosi un pugnale a due tagli, che aveva nel mezzo una guardia lunga quanto la palma della mano, se lo cinse sotto la veste sulla coscia destra,
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.	17 e andò a presentare regali ad Eglon re di Moab. Or Eglon era molto grasso.
18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;	18 Offerti i regali, Aod seguì i compagni che eran venuti con lui;
19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.	19 ma poi, tornato indietro da Galgala, ov'eran gl'idoli, andò a dire al re: « O re, ho un segreto da dirti ». Il re impose il silenzio, e fece ritirare tutti quelli che eran con lui.
20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.	20 Allora Aod, accostatosi al re che stava seduto solo nella camera da estate, gli disse: « Ho per te una parola di Dio ». Il re si alzò subito dal trono.
21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.	21 Allora Aod, stesa la mano sinistra, prese il pugnale dalla coscia destra, e glielo ficcò nel ventre
22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.	22 con tanta forza che la guardia, penetrata dietro alla lama nella ferita, rimase coperta dalla spropositata pinguedine. Aod non stette a tirar fuori il pugnale, ma lo lasciò fitto come era restato appena dato il colpo nel ventre, da cui, per le vie naturali, cominciaron subito ad uscire gli escrementi.
23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.	23 Poi, chiuse con ogni diligenza le porte della camera, e serratele a chiave,
24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'	24 Aod uscì dalla parte posteriore. I servi del re quando vennero e videro chiuse le porte della camera, dissero: « Forse fa i suoi bisogni nella camera da estate ».
25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.	25 Aspettarono; ma quando si vergognarono di attendere ancora, e, vedendo che nessuno apriva, presero la chiave e aprirono, trovarono che il loro padrone giaceva morto per terra.
26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.	26 Mentre essi eran sottosopra, Aod se ne fuggì, ripassò dal luogo degli idoli, da dove era tornato indietro, e giunse a Seirat.
27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.	27 Subito fe' sonare la tromba sul monte Efraim e ai figli d'Israele scesi con lui e dei quali s'era fatto condottiero, disse:
28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.	28 « Seguitemi, chè il Signore ha dati nelle vostre mani i Moabiti vostri nemici ». Ed essi, scesi dietro a lui, occuparono i guadi del Giordano, per dove si passa a Moab, e non lasciarono passar nessuno.
29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.	29 Poi percossero circa dieci mila Moabiti, tutti uomini robusti e valorosi: nessuno di essi potè scampare.
30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.	30 Cosi in quel giorno Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano d'Israele e il paese ebbe riposo per ottant'anni. Samgar
31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.	31 Dopo Aod ci fu Samgar, figlio di Anat, il quale uccise seicento Filistei con un vomere: anche lui difese Israele.
