1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars	1 A következők azok a nemzetek, amelyeket az Úr meghagyott, hogy általuk tanítsa Izraelt, mindazokat, akik nem ismerték a kánaániakkal vívott harcokat,
2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):	2 hogy aztán Izrael fiai megtanuljanak küzdeni az ellenséggel, s készséget szerezzenek a hadakozásra:
3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.	3 a filiszteusok öt fejedelme, az összes kánaániak, a szidoniak és azok a hivviták, akik a Libanon hegyén laktak, a Baál-Hermon hegytől egészen Hamat bejárójáig.
4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.	4 Azért hagyta meg őket, hogy próbára tegye általuk Izraelt, hallgatnak-e az Úr parancsaira, amelyeket Mózes által atyáiknak meghagyott, vagy sem. –
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;	5 Ezért kellett Izrael fiainak a kánaániak, a hetiták, az amoriták, a periziták, a hivviták és a jebuziták között lakniuk.
6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.	6 Ők azonban feleségül vették azok lányait és hozzáadták lányaikat azok fiaihoz és szolgáltak azok isteneinek.
7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.	7 Azt cselekedték ugyanis, ami gonosz az Úr színe előtt és megfeledkeztek az ő Urukról, Istenükről, s a Baáloknak és az Astartéknek szolgáltak.
8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.	8 Ezért az Úr megharagudott Izrael fiaira és Kúsán-Rasátaimnak, Mezopotámia királyának kezébe adta őket, mire nyolc esztendeig annak szolgáltak.
9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Ekkor az Úrhoz kiáltottak, s ő szabadítót támasztott nekik, hogy megszabadítsa őket: Otonielt, Kenez fiát, Káleb öccsét.
10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.	10 Rászállt ugyanis az Úr lelke, s bírája lett Izraelnek és kiment a harcba, s az Úr kezébe adta Kúsán-Rasátaimot, Szíria királyát, s ő legyőzte őt.
11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.	11 Aztán nyugta volt az országnak negyven esztendeig és Otoniel, Kenez fia meghalt.
12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.	12 Ám Izrael fiai ismét azt cselekedték, ami gonosz az Úr színe előtt. Ekkor ő erőt adott velük szemben Eglonnak, Moáb királyának, mivel azt cselekedték, ami gonosz az Úr színe előtt,
13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.	13 s mellé adta Ammonnak és Amaleknek fiait. Erre az felvonult, megverte Izraelt, és elfoglalta a Pálmák városát,
14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.	14 mire Izrael fiai tizennyolc esztendeig Eglonnak, Moáb királyának szolgáltak.
15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.	15 Akkor aztán az Úrhoz kiáltottak, és ő szabadítót támasztott nekik, név szerint Áodot, Gerának, Jemini fiának a fiát, aki a bal kezét úgy használta, mint más a jobb kezét. Általa ugyanis ajándékot küldtek Izrael fiai Eglonnak, Moáb királyának.
16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.	16 Ő akkor egy kétélű kardot készített magának, amelyen tenyérnyi hosszú markolat volt, s azt felkötötte a köntöse alá, a jobb csípőjére.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.	17 Így vitte el az ajándékot Eglonnak, Moáb királyának. Eglon pedig igen kövér ember volt.
18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;	18 Amikor aztán átadta neki az ajándékot, egy darabig elkísérte társait, akik vele jöttek,
19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.	19 de Gilgálból, ahol a bálványok voltak, visszatért, s beüzent a királynak: »Bizalmas szavam volna hozzád, ó király!« Erre az csendet parancsolt, s amikor mindenki kiment, aki körülötte volt,
20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.	20 Áod bement hozzá – ő nyári termében ült egyedül –, és azt mondta: »Isteni üzenetem van a számodra.« Erre ő legott felkelt trónjáról.
21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.	21 Ekkor Áod kinyújtotta bal kezét és előrántotta a jobb csípőjéről a tőrt, s beledöfte Eglon hasába,
22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.	22 akkora erővel, hogy a penge után a markolat is beleszaladt a sebbe, s beleszorult a kövér hájba – ki sem húzta a kardot, hanem amint beledöfte, úgy hagyta a testben –, és a természet elrejtett helyén legott kiomlott belének sara.
23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.	23 Erre Áod gondosan bezárta és elreteszelte a terem ajtóit,
24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'	24 s a hátsó ajtón kiment. Amikor aztán előjöttek a király szolgái és látták, hogy a terem ajtói be vannak zárva, azt mondták: »Nyilván szükségét végzi nyári kamrájában.«
25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.	25 Amikor azonban már oly sokáig várakoztak, hogy szinte szégyellték, s látták, hogy senki sem nyit ajtót, vették a kulcsot, benyitottak, s ott találták urukat a földön elterülve, halva.
26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.	26 Amíg ők zavarban voltak, Áod elmenekült és elhaladt a Bálványok helye mellett, ahonnan visszament, és eljutott Szeírába.
27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.	27 Efraim hegységén aztán legott megfújta a harsonát, mire Izrael fiai az ő vezetésével leereszkedtek vele a hegységről.
28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.	28 Azt mondta ugyanis nekik: »Kövessetek, mert az Úr a kezünkbe adta ellenségeinket, a moabitákat.« Leereszkedtek tehát utána és elfoglalták a Jordánnak Moábba vezető átkelőit és nem engedtek átkelni senkit,
29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.	29 hanem úgy megverték a moabitákat abban az időben – körülbelül tízezer, csupa erős és vitéz embert –, hogy egy sem tudott megmenekülni közülük.
30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.	30 Így Moáb megalázkodott azon a napon Izrael keze alatt, s az országnak nyugta volt nyolcvan esztendeig.
31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.	31 Ő utána Samgár, Ánát fia következett. Ő egy szántóvassal megvert a filiszteusok közül hatszáz embert, s ő is megvédte Izraelt.
