1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars	1 Voici les nations que Yahvé laissa tranquilles pour mettre à l’épreuve Israël, c’est-à-dire les Israélites qui n’avaient pas connu les guerres de Canaan.
2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):	2 Il voulait que la jeunesse d’Israël, ceux qui n’avaient pas connu la guerre, apprenne à combattre.
3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.	3 Restèrent donc les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens et les Sidoniens, et aussi les Hivvites qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu’à l’Entrée-de-Hamat.
4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.	4 Yahvé voulut donc mettre Israël à l’épreuve et voir s’il obéirait à ses commandements, ceux que Moïse avait donnés à leurs pères.
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;	5 Les Israélites habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Hittites, des Amorites, des Périsites, des Hivvites et des Jébusites.
6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.	6 Ils épousèrent leurs filles, ils donnèrent pour leurs fils leurs propres filles, et ils servirent leurs dieux.
7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.	7 Les Israélites firent donc ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé. Ils oublièrent Yahvé leur Dieu et servirent les Baals et les Ashéras.
8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.	8 Alors la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre Israël. Il les livra aux mains de Kouchan-Richéatayim, roi d’Édom, et les Israélites furent soumis à Kouchan-Richéatayim pendant 8 ans.
9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Les Israélites crièrent vers Yahvé, et Yahvé leur fit surgir un sauveur qui les délivra: c’était Otniel, fils de Kénaz, frère cadet de Caleb.
10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.	10 L’esprit de Yahvé reposa sur lui et il agit comme juge en Israël. Il partit en guerre et Yahvé livra entre ses mains Kouchan-Richéatayim, roi d’Édom: il écrasa Kouchan-Richéatayim.
11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.	11 Le pays fut en paix pendant 40 ans, puis Otniel, fils de Kénaz mourut.
12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.	12 Une fois de plus les Israélites firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé, et lui rendit Églon, roi de Moab, beaucoup plus fort qu’Israël, simplement parce qu’ils faisaient ce qui déplaît à Yahvé.
13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.	13 Les Moabites s’allièrent avec les Ammonites et les Amalécites pour combattre Israël, et ils s’emparèrent de la Ville des Palmiers.
14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.	14 Pendant 18 ans les Israélites furent soumis à Églon, roi de Moab.
15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.	15 Les Israélites crièrent alors vers Yahvé, et Yahvé leur fit surgir un sauveur, Éhoud, fils de Guéra, un homme de Benjamin qui était gaucher. Les Israélites le chargèrent de porter le tribut à Églon, roi de Moab.
16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.	16 Éhoud se fit un poignard à deux tranchants, à lame courte, qu’il portait sous son habit contre sa cuisse droite.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.	17 Puis il alla offrir le tribut à Églon, roi de Moab (or Églon était un homme très gros).
18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;	18 De retour, après l’offrande du tribut, Éhoud renvoya les gens venus avec lui pour l’apporter,
19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.	19 comme ils étaient déjà aux Idoles de Guilgal. Lui revint sur ses pas et dit: “Ô roi! J’ai pour toi un message secret.” Le roi répondit: “Silence!” Et tous ceux qui se tenaient autour du roi se retirèrent.
20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.	20 Alors Éhoud s’approcha de lui, tandis qu’il était assis dans la chambre haute, bien au frais dans ses appartements privés. Éhoud dit: “C’est un message de Dieu que j’ai pour toi.” Alors le roi se leva de son siège.
21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.	21 Éhoud étendit sa main gauche, saisit le poignard de dessus sa cuisse droite et le lui enfonça dans le ventre.
22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.	22 La poignée entra à la suite de la lame et la graisse se referma par-dessus la lame, car il ne retira pas le poignard de son ventre, tandis que les excréments sortaient.
23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.	23 Éhoud alors s’échappa par derrière, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute et mit le verrou.
24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'	24 Lui sorti, les serviteurs arrivèrent, et voyant les portes de la chambre haute verrouillées, ils se dirent: “Sans doute fait-il ses besoins dans ses appartements privés.”
25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.	25 Ils attendirent tellement qu’ils en avaient honte, et les portes de la chambre haute ne s’ouvraient toujours pas. Alors ils prirent la clé et ouvrirent: leur maître gisait à terre, mort!
26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.	26 Éhoud s’était mis en sûreté pendant qu’ils attendaient. Il repassa par les Idoles et se sauva à Ha-Seïra.
27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.	27 Dès qu’il fut arrivé, il sonna du cor dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, et les Israélites descendirent de la montagne à sa suite.
28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.	28 Il leur dit: “Suivez-moi, car Yahvé a livré vos ennemis, les Moabites, entre nos mains.” Tous descendirent à sa suite, coupèrent les gués du Jourdain en direction de Moab, et ne laissèrent aucun homme s’échapper.
29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.	29 En ce temps-là, ils abattirent 10 000 hommes de Moab, tous robustes et entraînés: pas un seul n’échappa.
30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.	30 En ce jour-là, Moab fut soumis à Israël, et le pays fut en paix durant 80 ans.
31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.	31 Après lui se leva Chamgar, fils d’Anat. Il abattit 600 hommes de chez les Philistins avec un aiguillon à bœufs; lui aussi fut un libérateur d’Israël.
