1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars	1 Estas são as nações que o Senhor deixou subsistir para provar por meio delas os israelitas, todos aqueles que não tinham visto as guerras de Canaã,
2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):	2 e isso tão-somente para instrução das novas gerações israelitas, a fim de lhes ensinar a combater, ao menos àqueles que não o tinham feito antes.
3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.	3 Eram os cinco príncipes dos filisteus, todos os cananeus, os sidônios, os heveus que habitavam os montes do Líbano, desde a montanha de Baal-Hermon até a entrada de Hamat.
4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.	4 Essas nações ficaram para provar Israel, e ver se eles obedeceriam aos mandamentos que o Senhor havia prescrito aos seus pais por intermédio de Moisés.
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;	5 Os filhos de Israel habitaram no meio dos cananeus, dos hiteus, dos amorreus, dos ferezeus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus.
6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.	6 Tomaram por mulheres suas filhas e eles mesmos deram suas filhas aos filhos deles, e serviram os seus deuses.
7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.	7 Os israelitas fizeram o mal aos olhos do Senhor, esqueceram-se do Senhor, seu Deus, e serviram aos baal e às asserá.
8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.	8 A ira do Senhor inflamou-se contra Israel, e ele entregou-os nas mãos de Cusã-Rasataim, rei da Mesopotâmia, a quem ficaram sujeitos durante oito anos.
9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Os israelitas clamaram ao Senhor, que lhes suscitou um libertador para salvá-los: Otoniel, filho de Cenez, irmão mais novo de Caleb.
10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.	10 O Espírito do Senhor desceu sobre ele: ele julgou Israel e saiu para a guerra. O Senhor entregou-lhe Cusã-Rasataim, rei da Mesopotâmia, e sua mão triunfou sobre ele.
11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.	11 A terra teve quarenta anos de descanso, e Otoniel, filho de Cenez, morreu.
12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.	12 Os israelitas fizeram de novo o mal aos olhos do Senhor, e o Senhor excitou contra eles Eglon, rei de Moab, porque tinham feito o mal aos seus olhos.
13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.	13 Eglon aliou-se aos filhos de Amon e de Amalec, e pôs-se em marcha contra Israel; derrotou-o e apoderou-se da cidade das Palmeiras.
14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.	14 E os israelitas estiveram sujeitos a Eglon, rei de Moab, por dezoito anos.
15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.	15 Os filhos de Israel clamaram ao Senhor, que lhes suscitou um libertador na pessoa de Aod, o canhoto, filho de Gera, benjaminita. Os filhos de Israel mandaram, por meio dele, um presente a Eglon, rei de Moab.
16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.	16 Aod mandou fazer para si uma espada de dois gumes, de um côvado de comprimento, e a levava debaixo de suas vestes, apoiada na coxa direita.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.	17 Ele veio e ofereceu o presente a Eglon, rei de Moab, que era muito gordo.
18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;	18 Terminada a cerimônia, levou os homens que tinham trazido o presente
19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.	19 até as estelas próximas de Gálgala. Voltou ao rei e disse-lhe: Senhor, tenho uma palavra a dizer-te. Silêncio, ordenou o rei; e todos os seus familiares se retiraram.
20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.	20 Aod entrou; o rei estava assentado, só, no seu quarto de verão. Tenho a dizer-te uma palavra da parte do Senhor, disse Aod. O rei levantou-se do seu trono.
21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.	21 E logo tomou Aod com a mão esquerda a espada que trazia na coxa direita e mergulhou-lha no ventre
22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.	22 com tanta força que o próprio cabo entrou após a lâmina, e ficou coberto pela muita gordura. E não retirou do ventre sua espada, cuja lâmina saía por detrás.
23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.	23 Aod saiu pela galeria, depois de ter fechado bem atrás de si as portas do quarto de cima, deixando-as trancadas.
24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'	24 E, tendo ele partido, notaram os servos do rei que as portas estavam fechadas: Sem dúvida, disseram, estará fazendo necessidade, em seu quarto de verão.
25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.	25 Mas, depois de esperarem muito tempo, ficaram alarmados, e, vendo que a porta do apartamento não se abria, tomaram a chave, abriram-na e encontraram o seu senhor morto e estendido por terra.
26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.	26 Enquanto isso, Aod fugiu para além das estelas, e foi para Seirat.
27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.	27 Logo que chegou à montanha de Efraim, tocou a trombeta e os filhos de Israel desceram da montanha com ele.
28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.	28 Segui-me, disse-lhes ele, porque o Senhor entregou-vos os moabitas, vossos inimigos. Eles o seguiram e ocuparam os vaus do Jordão, por onde se vai a Moab, de modo a não deixar passar ninguém.
29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.	29 Mataram então cerca de dez mil homens, todo o escol e todo o vigor de Moab; ninguém escapou.
30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.	30 Naquele dia foi Moab humilhado sob a mão de Israel. E a terra teve um descanso de oitenta anos.
31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.	31 Depois de Aod, Samgar, filho de Anat, derrotou seiscentos filisteus com um aguilhão de bois. Samgar também foi um libertador para Israel.
