NEW JERUSALEMSacra Bibbia Garofalo
Melchizedek, king of Salem, a priest of God Most High, came to meet Abraham when he returned fromdefeating the kings, and blessed him;1 Questo Melchisedec, infatti, re di Salem, sacerdote del Dio Altissimo — che andò incontro ad Abramo, mentre questi ritornava dalla strage dei re, e lo benedisse,
and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. By the interpretation of his name, he is, first, 'king ofsaving justice' and also king of Salem, that is, 'king of peace';2 e a cui Abramo fece parte, come decima, di tutto; il nome del quale viene interpretato, in primo luogo, «re di giustizia», quindi «re di Salem», cioè «re di pace»;
he has no father, mother or ancestry, and his life has no beginning or ending; he is like the Son of God.He remains a priest for ever.3 senza padre, senza madre, senza genealogia, che non ha né inizio di giorni né e di vita, ma fatto simile al Figlio di Dio — rimane sacerdote per sempre.
Now think how great this man must have been, if the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the finestplunder.4 Considerate ora quanto sia grande costui al quale lo stesso Abramo, il patriarca, diede la decima del meglio del bottino.
We know that any of the descendants of Levi who are admitted to the priesthood are obliged by theLaw to take tithes from the people, that is, from their own brothers although they too are descended fromAbraham.5 Certo, anche quelli tra i figli di Levi che ricevono il sacerdozio hanno il mandato di esigere, secondo la legge, la decima dal popolo, cioè dai loro fratelli, sebbene anche questi siano usciti dai lombi d’Abramo.
But this man, who was not of the same descent, took his tithe from Abraham, and he gave his blessingto the holder of the promises.6 Ma qualcuno che non deriva da loro per discendenza ha ricevuto la decima da Abramo e ha benedetto colui che detiene le promesse.
Now it is indisputable that a blessing is given by a superior to an inferior.7 Ora è fuori di discussione che l’inferiore viene benedetto dal superiore.
Further, in the normal case it is ordinary mortal men who receive the tithes, whereas in that case it wasone who is attested as being alive.8 Inoltre, qui ricevono la decima uomini mortali; là, invece, uno del quale s’attesta che egli vive.
It could be said that Levi himself, who receives tithes, actual y paid tithes, in the person of Abraham,9 E, per dire così, in Abramo anche Levi, che pure riscuote la decima, l’ha versata:
because he was stil in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek came to meet him.10 era, infatti, ancora nei lombi del padre, quando a questi venne incontro Melchisedec.
Now if perfection had been reached through the levitical priesthood -- and this was the basis of theLaw given to the people -- why was it necessary for a different kind of priest to arise, spoken of as being of theorder of Melchizedek rather than of the order of Aaron?11 Se, dunque, la - perfezione si, fosse avuta mediante il sacerdozio, levitico — sulla base di esso infatti; il popolo ricevette la legge — che bisogno c'era che sorgesse un altro sacerdote. secondo l'ordine di Melchisedec, e non fosse denominato secondo l’ordine di Aronne?
Any change in the priesthood must mean a change in the Law as wel .12 Poiché mutato il sacerdozio, ne segue di necessità anche la mutazione della legge.
So our Lord, of whom these things were said, belonged to a different tribe, the members of whichhave never done service at the altar;13 Colui, infatti, di cui si dicono queste cose appartiene a un’altra tribù, della quale nessuno fu addetto all’altare;
everyone knows he came from Judah, a tribe which Moses did not mention at al when dealing withpriests.14 poiché è notorio che dalla tribù di Giuda è sorto il Signor Nostro; circa la quale tribù nulla disse Mosè trattando di sacerdoti.
This becomes even more clearly evident if another priest, of the type of Melchizedek, arises who is apriest15 E la cosa si fa ancora più evidente, se si considera che a somiglianza di Melchisedec viene stabilito un altro sacerdote,
not in virtue of a law of physical descent, but in virtue of the power of an indestructible life.16 il quale diviene tale non secondo la norma di una disposizione carnale, ma per virtù di, una vita indefettibile.
For he is attested by the prophecy: You are a priest for ever of the order of Melchizedek.17 Di lui s’attesta, infatti: Tu sei sacerdote in eterno secondo l’ordine di Malchisedec.
The earlier commandment is thus abolished, because of its weakness and ineffectiveness18 Viene pertanto abrogato un precedente ordinamento causa della sua debolezza e inutilità —
since the Law could not make anything perfect; but now this commandment is replaced by somethingbetter-the hope that brings us close to God.19 poiche nulla la legge portò a perfezione — e introdotta una migliore speranza, per la quale ci avviciniamo a Dio.
Now the former priests became priests without any oath being sworn,20 E in quanto ciò avvenne non senza giuramento — mentre quelli divennero sacerdoti senza giuramento,
but this one with the swearing of an oath by him who said to him, The Lord has sworn an oath he wilnever retract: you are a priest for ever;21 questi, al contrario, con giuramento di colui che gli dice: Giurò il Signore e non si pentirà: tu sei sacerdote in eterno —
the very fact that it occurred with the swearing of an oath makes the covenant of which Jesus is theguarantee al the greater.22 intanto Gesù è divenuto altresì mediatore di una migliore alleanza.
Further, the former priests were many in number, because death put an end to each one of them;23 E mentre quelli sono divenuti sacerdoti in molti, perché dalla morte venivano impediti di restare;
but this one, because he remains for ever, has a perpetual priesthood.24 questi, invece, perché rimane in eterno, ha un sacerdozio non transitorio
It fol ows, then, that his power to save those who come to God through him is absolute, since he livesfor ever to intercede for them.25 e perciò perfettamente può salvare coloro che per lui s’accostano a Dio, essendo egli sempre vivo per intercedere a favore di essi.
Such is the high priest that met our need, holy, innocent and uncontaminated, set apart from sinners, and raised up above the heavens;26 Tale sommo sacerdote occorreva, infatti, a noi: santo, innocente, incontaminato, segregato dai peccatori ed elevato al di sopra dei cieli;
he has no need to offer sacrifices every day, as the high priests do, first for their own sins and onlythen for those of the people; this he did once and for al by offering himself.27 il quale non ha bisogno ogni giorno, come i sommi sacerdoti, di offrire sacrifici prima per i propri peccati, poi per quelli del popolo. Questo egli fece una volta per sempre quando offrì se stesso.
The Law appoints high priests who are men subject to weakness; but the promise on oath, whichcame after the Law, appointed the Son who is made perfect for ever.28 La legge, infatti, costituisce sommi sacerdoti uomini gravati d’infermità, ma la parola del giuramento, succeduto alla legge, un Figlio in eterno perfetto.
