Joshua 7

1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites.	1 Or i figli d'Israele, trasgredendo il comando, si appropriarono dell'anatema: Acan figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zare, della tribù di Giuda, prese qualche cosa dell'anatema; così il Signore si adirò contro i figli d'Israele.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai.	2 Intanto Giosuè da Gerico mandò degli uomini contro Ai, che è vicina a Betaven, ad oriente di Betel, e disse loro: « Andate a esplorare il paese ». Essi, adempiendo il comando, esplorarono Ai;
3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!'	3 e al loro ritorno dissero: « Non salga tutto il popolo; ma vadano due o tremila uomini a distrugger la città: per chè stancare inutilmente tutto il popolo contro pochissimi nemici? »
4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai,	4 Andaron dunque tre mila combattenti; ma furon subito messi in fuga
5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water.	5 e battuti dagli uomini della città di Ai; i nemici ne uccisero trentasei uomini, inseguendoli dalla porta sino a Sabarim, e facendoli a pezzi mentre fuggivano per la difesa. Il cuore del popolo s'intimidì e si sciolse come acqua.
6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads.	6 Giosuè si stracciò le vesti e stette prostrato per terra davanti all'arca del Signore fino alla sera, lui e tutti gli anziani d'Israele, e si gettarono polvere sulla testa.
7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan!	7 E Giosuè esclamò: « Ah! Signore Dio, perchè volesti far passare a questo popolo il Giordano per darci nelle mani dell'Amorreo e distruggerci? Fossimo restati di là dal Giordano, come avevamo cominciato!
8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy?	8 Signore mio Dio, che dovrò dire nel vedere Israele che volge le spalle ai suoi nemici?
9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?'	9 L'udiranno i Cananei e tutti gli abitanti della terra, e uniti insieme, ci scingeranno, disperderanno il nostro nome dalla terra: e tu che farai pel tuo gran nome? »
10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this?	10 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: « Alzati, perchè stai bocconi per terra?
11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage.	11 Israele ha peccato, ha trasgredito il mio patto; si sono appropriati dell'anatema, han rubato, hanno mentito, l'han nascosto fra le loro cose.
12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.'	12 Israele non potrà stare a fronte dei suoi nemici, e li fuggirà, perchè s'è contaminato coll'anatema: io non tornerò con voi, finché non sterminiate chi è reo di tal delitto.
13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction.	13 Alzati, santifica il popolo e di' loro: Santificatevi per domani, perchè, dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: l'anatema è in mezzo a te, o Israele: tu non potrai stare a fronte dei tuoi nemici fino a tanto che non sia tolto di mezzo a te chi s'è contaminato con tal delitto.
14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man.	14 Domani vi accosterete, ciascuno secondo le vostre tribù, e la tribù indicata dalla sorte si presenterà divisa nelle sue famiglie, la famiglia nelle sue case, la casa nei suoi uomini.
15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." '	15 Chiunque sarà trovato reo di tal delitto, sarà dato alle fiamme con tutte le sue cose, perchè ha violato il patto del Signore, ha fatto cosa nefanda in Israele ».
16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah.	16 E Giosuè, alzatosi la mattina, fece accostare Israele, tribù per tribù, e fu trovata la tribù di Giuda.
17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi.	17 Presentatasi questa divisa nelle sue famiglie, fu trovata la famiglia di Zare. Presentatasi questa, casa per casa, fu trovata la fa miglia di Zabdi;
18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.	18 e divisa questa casa nei suoi uomini, fu trovato Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zare della tribù di Giuda.
19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.'	19 Allora Giosuè disse ad Acan: « Figlio mio, da' gloria al Signore Dio d'Israele, confessa e dimmi quello che hai fatto, non me lo nascondere ».
20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done.	20 E Acan, rispondendo a Giosuè, disse: « È vero, son io che ho peccato contro il Signore Dio d'Israele; ed ecco quel che ho fatto:
21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.'	21 avendo veduto tra le spoglie un ottimo mantello di scarlatto, due cento sicli d'argento e un regolo d'oro di cinquanta sicli, mi ci affezionai e li presi e li nascosi in terra in mezzo della mia tenda, ricoprendo l'argento colla terra da me scavata ».
22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath.	22 Allora Giosuè mandò dei ministri, i quali, corsi alla detta tenda, trovarono ogni cosa nascosta nel luogo indicato, e anche l'argento.
23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh.	23 Dopo aver messi quegli oggetti fuor della tenda, li portarono a Giosuè e a tutti i figli d'Israele, e poi li gettaron davanti al Signore.
24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him.	24 Allora Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, presero Acan, figlio di Zare, l'argento, il mantello, il regolo d'oro, ed anche i figli e le figlie di lui, e i buoi, gli asini, le pecore, la sua tenda ed ogni suo a vere, e li portarono nella valle di Acor,
25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them).	25 dove Giosuè disse: « Siccome hai con turbato noi, il Signore conturbi te in questo giorno ». E tutto Israele lo lapidò, e tutte le cose di lui furon date alle fiamme.
26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today.	26 Poi ammassarono sopra di lui Un gran mucchio di pietre che esiste anch'oggi. E il furore del Signore si ri trasse da loro; e quel luogo fino al presente porta il nome di Valle di Acor.
