Joshua 7

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites.	1 Mais les Israélites se rendirent coupables d'une violation de l'anathème: Akân, fils de Karmi, fils deZabdi, fils de Zérah, de la tribu de Juda, prit de ce qui tombait sous l'anathème, et la colère de Yahvé s'enflammacontre les Israélites.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai.	2 Or Josué envoya des hommes de Jéricho vers Aï (qui est près de Bet-Avèn), à l'orient de Béthel, et illeur dit: "Montez espionner le pays." Ils montèrent espionner Aï.
3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!'	3 De retour auprès de Josué, il lui dirent: "Que tout le peuple n'y monte pas, mais que 2.000 ou 3.000hommes environ montent attaquer Aï. N'y fatigue pas tout le peuple car ces gens-là ne sont pas nombreux."
4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai,	4 Il n'y monta du peuple qu'environ 3.000 hommes, mais ils lâchèrent pied devant les habitants de Aï.
5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water.	5 Les habitants de Aï leur tuèrent à peu près 36 hommes, puis les poursuivirent en avant de la porte,jusqu'à Shebarim, et à la descente, ils les écrasèrent. Alors le peuple perdit coeur et son courage fondit.
6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads.	6 Alors Josué déchira ses vêtements, se prosterna face contre terre devant l'arche de Yahvé jusqu'ausoir, ainsi que les anciens d'Israël, et tous répandirent de la poussière sur leur tête.
7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan!	7 Josué dit: "Hélas, Seigneur Yahvé, pourquoi as-tu tenu à faire passer le Jourdain à ce peuple si c'estpour nous livrer à la main de l'Amorite et nous faire périr? Ah! si nous avions pu nous établir au-delà duJourdain!
8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy?	8 Excuse-moi, Seigneur! Que dirai-je maintenant qu'Israël a tourné le dos devant ses ennemis?
9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?'	9 Les Cananéens vont l'apprendre, ainsi que tous les habitants du pays, ils se coaliseront contre nouspour retrancher notre nom de la terre. Que feras-tu alors pour ton grand nom?"
10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this?	10 Yahvé dit à Josué: "Relève-toi! Pourquoi rester ainsi prosterné?
11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage.	11 Israël a péché, il a violé l'alliance que je lui avais imposée: Oui! on a pris de ce qui était anathème, etmême on l'a dérobé, et même on l'a dissimulé, et même on l'a mis dans ses bagages.
12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.'	12 Eh bien, les Israélites ne pourront pas tenir devant leurs ennemis, ils tourneront le dos devant leursennemis parce qu'ils sont devenus anathèmes. Si vous ne faites pas disparaître du milieu de vous l'objet del'anathème, je ne serai plus avec vous.
13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction.	13 Lève-toi, sanctifie le peuple et tu diras: Sanctifiez-vous pour demain, car ainsi parle Yahvé, le Dieud'Israël: L'anathème est au milieu de toi, Israël; tu ne pourras pas tenir devant tes ennemis jusqu'à ce que vousayez écarté l'anathème du milieu de vous.
14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man.	14 Vous vous présenterez donc demain matin, par tribus, et la tribu que Yahvé aura désignée par le sortse présentera par clans, et le clan que Yahvé aura désigné par le sort se présentera par familles, et la famille queYahvé aura désignée par le sort se présentera homme par homme.
15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." '	15 Enfin celui qui sera désigné par le sort en ce qui concerne l'anathème sera livré au feu, lui et tout cequi lui appartient, pour avoir transgressé l'alliance avec Yahvé et avoir commis une infamie en Israël."
16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah.	16 Josué se leva de bon matin; il fit avancer Israël par tribus, et c'est la tribu de Juda qui fut désignée parle sort.
17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi.	17 Il fit approcher les clans de Juda, et le clan de Zérah fut désigné par le sort. Il fit approcher le clan deZérah par familles, et Zabdi fut désigné par le sort.
18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.	18 Josué fit avancer la famille de Zabdi homme par homme, et ce fut Akân, fils de Karmi, fils de Zabdi,fils de Zérah, de la tribu de Juda, qui fut désigné par le sort.
19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.'	19 Josué dit alors à Akân: "Mon fils, rends gloire à Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, et fais-lui hommage; déclare-moi ce que tu as fait et ne me cache rien."
20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done.	20 Akân répondit à Josué: "En vérité, c'est moi qui ai péché contre Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, et voici ce quej'ai fait.
21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.'	21 J'ai vu dans le butin un beau manteau de Shinéar et 200 sicles d'argent ainsi qu'un lingot d'or pesant50 sicles, je les ai convoités et je les ai pris. Ils sont cachés dans la terre au milieu de ma tente, l'argent par-dessous."
22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath.	22 Josué envoya des messagers qui coururent vers la tente, et en effet le manteau était caché dans latente et l'argent par-dessous.
23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh.	23 Ils prirent le tout du milieu de la tente, l'apportèrent à Josué et à tous les Israélites et le déposèrentdevant Yahvé.
24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him.	24 Alors Josué prit Akân, fils de Zérah, et le fit monter à la vallée d'Akor avec l'argent, le manteau et lelingot d'or, avec ses fils, ses filles, son taureau, son âne, son petit bétail, sa tente et tout ce qui lui appartenait.Tout Israël l'accompagnait.
25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them).	25 Josué dit: "Pourquoi nous as-tu porté malheur? Que Yahvé, en ce jour, t'apporte le malheur!" et toutIsraël le lapida (et on les livra au feu et on leur jeta des pierres).
26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today.	26 Ils élevèrent sur lui un grand monceau de pierres qui existe encore aujourd'hui. Yahvé revint alors deson ardente colère. C'est pour cela qu'on a donné à ce lieu le nom de vallée d'Akor, jusqu'aujourd'hui.
