1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites.	1 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele trasgredirono il comando, e si appropriarono dell'anatema. Imperocché Achan figliuolo di Charmi, figliuolo di Zabdi, figliuolo di Zare della tribù di Giuda prese qualche cosa dell'anatema: e il Signore si adirò contro i figliuoli d'Israele.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai.	2 E Giosuè mandando gente da Gerico verso Hai che è vicina a Bethaven all’oriente della città di Bethel, disse loro: Andate, e osservate il paese. E quegli adempiendo il comando considerarono la città di Hai.
3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!'	3 E al loro ritorno dissero: Non si muova tutto il popolo: ma due, o tre mila uomini vadano a distruggere quella città: perchè defatigar tutto il popolo inutilmente per pochissimi nemici?
4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai,	4 Andarono adunque tre mila combattenti. Ma questi voltaron presto le spalle,
5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water.	5 Avendo lor dato addosso gli uomini della città di Hai; e moriron di essi trentasei persone: e i nemici gl’inseguirono dalla porta (di Hai) fino a Sabarim, e uccisero quei che fuggivano per luoghi declivi: e il cuore del popolo s'intimidì, e si scioglieva come acqua.
6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads.	6 Ma Giosuè stracciò le sue vesti, e stette prostrato per terra dinanzi all’arca del Signore, fino alla sera si egli, che tutti i seniori d’Israele: e si gettavan polvere sulle teste;
7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan!	7 E disse Giosuè: Ahi, Signore Dio, perchè mai volesti tu trasportare di qua dal fiume Giordano questo popolo per darci nelle mani degli Amorrhei, e sterminarci? Fossimo noi rimasi di là dal Giordano, come avevam cominciato.
8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy?	8 Mio Signore Dio, che dirò, veggendo io Israele volgere le spalle a' suoi nemici?
9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?'	9 Lo sentiran dire i Cananei, e tutti gli abitanti di questa terra, e uniti insieme ci stringeranno, e sperderanno il nome nostro dalla terra: e che farai tu del nome tuo grande?
10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this?	10 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: Alzati, perchè stai tu prostrato per terra?
11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage.	11 Israele ha peccato, e ha trasgredito il mio patto: e si sono appropriati dell’anatema, e hanno fatto furto, e hanno mentito, e l’hanno nascosto tra le robe loro.
12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.'	12 Non potrà Israele stare a petto co' suoi nemici, e li fuggirà; perchè è contaminato a cagion dell'anatema: io non sarò più con voi, se prima non isterminate colui che è reo di tale scelleraggine.
13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction.	13 Alzati, purifica il popolo, e di' loro: Santificatevi pel dì seguente: perocché queste cose dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: L'anatema è in mezzo a te, o Israele: tu non potrai stare a petto de' tuoi nemici, sino a tanto che sia tolto dal tuo ceto colui che è macchiato di tal delitto.
14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man.	14 E domane vi presenterete ciascuno nelle vostre tribù, e la tribù che sarà tirata a sorte, si presenterà famiglia per famiglia, e casa per casa, e uomo per uomo.
15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." '	15 E chiunque sarà scoperto reo di tal delitto, sarà abbruciato con tutte le cose sue, perchè egli ha violalo il patto del Signore, e ha fatto cosa nefanda in Israele.
16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah.	16 Alzatosi adunque Giosuè la mattina, fece venire Israele tribù per tribù, e venne la sorte della tribù di Giuda.
17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi.	17 Ed essendosi presentata questa divisa nelle sue famiglie, venne la sorte della famiglia di Zare. E questa essendosi presentata casa per casa, venne la sorte della casa di Zabdi:
18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.	18 E presi di questa casa gli uomini ad uno ad uno, venne la sorte sopra Achan figliuolo di Charmi, figliuolo di Zabdi, figliuolo di Zare della tribù di Giuda.
19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.'	19 E Giosuè disse ad Achan: Figliuolo mio, dà gloria al Signore Dio d'Israele, e confessa, e dimmi quello che hai fatto; nol celare.
20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done.	20 E Achan rispose a Giosuè, e dissegli: Veramente io ho peccato contro il Signore Dio d'Israele, e feci così.
21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.'	21 Io osservai tra le spoglie un mantello di scarlatto assai buono, e dugento sicli d'argento, e una lamina di oro di cinquanta sicli, e per bramosia li presi, e gli ascosi sotto terra nel mezzo della mia tenda, e ricopersi l’argento colla terra che io avea scavata.
22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath.	22 Giosuè adunque spedì i ministri, i quali essendo andati di corsa alla tenda di lui, trovarono ogni cosa nascosta nello stesso luogo, e insieme l'argento.
23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh.	23 E messe fuor della tenda tutte quelle cose, le recarono dinanzi a Giosuè, e a tutti i figliuoli d'Israele, e le gettarono al cospetto del Signore.
24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him.	24 Allora Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele presero Achan figliuolo di Zare, e l'argento, e il mantello, e la lamina d'oro, e anche i figliuoli di lui, e le figlie, e i bovi, e gli asini, e le pecore, e a sua tenda, con tutte le sue robe, e li condussero nella valle di Achor:
25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them).	25 E ivi disse a lui Giosuè: Dappoiché tu hai dato disturbo a noi, il Signore sturberà te in questo giorno: e tutto Israele lo lapidò, e tutte le cose di lui furon date alle fiamme.
26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today.	26 È ammassaron sopra di lui un gran mucchio di pietre, che è restato sino al dì d'oggi. E da lor si ritrasse il furor del Signore. E fu chiamato quel luogo la valle di Achor sino al dì d'oggi.
