NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites.	1 Les Israélites commirent une grave infidélité au sujet de l’anathème. Akan, fils de Karmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zérah, de la tribu de Juda, prit des choses interdites par anathème, et la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre les Israélites.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai.	2 De Jéricho, Josué envoya des hommes vers Aï qui est à côté de Beth-Aven, à l’est de Béthel. “Montez et explorez le pays”, leur dit-il. Ces hommes allèrent reconnaître la ville d’Aï.
3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!'	3 À leur retour ils dirent à Josué: “Inutile de mobiliser tout le peuple; que 2 ou 3 000 hommes montent à Aï pour en faire la conquête, mais ne fatigue pas tout le peuple, car ses habitants sont peu nombreux.”
4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai,	4 Environ 3 000 hommes du peuple montèrent, mais les gens d’Aï les mirent en fuite.
5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water.	5 Les gens d’Aï leur tuèrent environ 36 hommes, puis ils les poursuivirent depuis la porte de la ville jusqu’à Chébarim. Dans la descente ils les écrasèrent. Saisi de peur, le peuple perdit courage.
6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads.	6 Alors Josué déchira ses vêtements et se prosterna la face contre terre devant l’Arche de Yahvé jusqu’au soir. Lui et les anciens d’Israël jetèrent de la poussière sur leurs têtes.
7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan!	7 Josué dit alors: “Ah! Seigneur Yahvé! Pourquoi as-tu fait traverser le Jourdain à ce peuple? Était-ce pour nous livrer entre les mains des Amorites et nous faire périr? Pourquoi ne sommes-nous pas restés de l’autre côté du Jourdain?
8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy?	8 Seigneur, Israël a tourné le dos devant ses ennemis: que puis-je dire de plus?
9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?'	9 Les Cananéens et tous les gens du pays vont l’apprendre, ils nous encercleront et effaceront notre nom de ce pays. Que vas-tu faire pour l’honneur de ton grand Nom?”
10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this?	10 Yahvé répondit à Josué: “Debout! Pourquoi t’es-tu jeté la face contre terre?
11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage.	11 Israël a péché, il a été infidèle à l’Alliance que je lui ai prescrite. On a pris des objets interdits par anathème, on les a volés, on a menti et on les a cachés dans les bagages.
12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.'	12 Les Israélites ne tiendront plus devant leurs ennemis, ils tourneront le dos devant leurs adversaires, car ils sont devenus anathèmes. Je ne serai plus avec vous tant que vous n’enlèverez pas l’anathème du milieu de vous.
13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction.	13 “Tu vas donc sanctifier les Israélites. Tu leur diras: Sanctifiez-vous pour demain, car voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: L’anathème est au milieu de vous, Israélites, et vous ne tiendrez pas devant vos ennemis jusqu’au jour où vous aurez ôté l’anathème du milieu de vous.
14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man.	14 C’est pourquoi demain vous vous approcherez par tribus. La tribu que Yahvé aura retenue s’approchera par familles, la famille que Yahvé aura retenue s’approchera par maisons, et la maison que Yahvé aura retenue s’approchera par têtes.
15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." '	15 Celui qui aura été ainsi désigné sera brûlé par le feu avec tout ce qui lui appartient, car il a été infidèle à l’Alliance de Yahvé et il a commis un crime en Israël.”
16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah.	16 Le lendemain, Josué se leva de bon matin et fit approcher Israël, tribu par tribu. La tribu de Juda fut retenue.
17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi.	17 Il fit approcher les familles de Juda et la famille de Zérah fut retenue. Il fit approcher la famille de Zérah par maisons et la maison de Zabdi fut retenue.
18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.	18 Il fit approcher la maison de Zabdi par têtes et Akan fils de Karmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zérah de la tribu de Juda, fut retenu.
19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.'	19 Alors Josué dit à Akan: “Dis la vérité devant Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, mon fils! Rends-lui hommage! Dis-moi ce que tu as fait et ne me cache rien.”
20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done.	20 Akan répondit à Josué: “C’est vrai, j’ai péché contre Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, et voici ce que j’ai fait:
21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.'	21 Au milieu des dépouilles j’ai vu un beau manteau de Chinéar, 200 pièces d’argent et un lingot d’or du poids de 50 sicles. J’ai cédé à la tentation et je les ai pris. Ils sont cachés dans le sol au milieu de ma tente et l’argent est en dessous.”
22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath.	22 Josué envoya donc des hommes. Ils coururent vers la tente: tout était bien caché dans la tente et l’argent était dessous.
23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh.	23 Alors ils le retirèrent de la tente et l’apportèrent là où était Josué avec tout Israël. On déposa le tout devant Yahvé.
24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him.	24 Josué et tout Israël prirent Akan fils de Zérah, avec l’argent, le manteau, le lingot d’or, les fils et les filles d’Akan avec ses bœufs, ses ânes, ses brebis, sa tente et tout ce qui lui appartenait, et ils les conduisirent dans la vallée d’Akor.
25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them).	25 Alors Josué lui dit: “Pourquoi as-tu attiré sur nous le malheur? Que Yahvé, aujourd’hui, fasse passer sur toi le malheur.” Et tout Israël le lapida. On les brûla par le feu et on les lapida.
26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today.	26 On éleva sur Akan un grand tas de pierres qui est encore là aujourd’hui, et Yahvé revint de l’ardeur de sa colère. Voilà pourquoi, jusqu’à ce jour, on appelle cet endroit: la vallée d’Akor.
