Joshua 7

1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites.	1 Ma gli Israeliti violarono la legge dello sterminio: Acan, figlio di Carmì, figlio di Zabdì, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda, si impadronì di cose votate allo sterminio e allora la collera del Signore si accese contro gli Israeliti.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai.	2 Giosuè inviò degli uomini da Gerico ad Ai, che si trova presso Bet-Aven, a oriente di Betel, con quest’ordine: «Salite a esplorare la regione». Quegli uomini salirono a esplorare Ai,
3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!'	3 ritornarono da Giosuè e gli dissero: «Non c’è bisogno che vada tutto il popolo: vadano all’assalto due o tremila uomini, ed espugneranno Ai; non impegnare tutto il popolo, perché sono in pochi».
4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai,	4 Vi andarono allora del popolo circa tremila uomini, ma dovettero fuggire davanti a quelli di Ai,
5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water.	5 che ne uccisero circa trentasei, li inseguirono dalla porta della città fino a Sebarìm, sconfiggendoli sulle pendici. Il cuore del popolo si sciolse come acqua.
6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads.	6 Giosuè si stracciò le vesti, si prostrò con la faccia a terra davanti all’arca del Signore e lì rimase fino a sera insieme agli anziani d’Israele, e si cosparsero il capo di polvere.
7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan!	7 Giosuè disse: «Ah! Signore Dio, perché hai voluto far passare il Giordano a questo popolo, per consegnarci poi nelle mani dell’Amorreo e distruggerci? Avessimo deciso di stabilirci al di là del Giordano!
8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy?	8 Perdona, Signore mio: che posso dire, dal momento che Israele ha dovuto volgere le spalle di fronte ai suoi nemici?
9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?'	9 Lo udranno i Cananei e tutti gli abitanti della regione, ci accerchieranno e cancelleranno il nostro nome dalla terra. E tu, che farai per il tuo grande nome?».
10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this?	10 Rispose il Signore a Giosuè: «Àlzati, perché stai con la faccia a terra?
11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage.	11 Israele ha peccato. Essi hanno trasgredito il patto che avevo loro imposto e hanno preso cose votate allo sterminio: hanno rubato, hanno dissimulato, le hanno messe nei loro sacchi!
12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.'	12 Gli Israeliti non potranno resistere ai loro nemici, volgeranno loro le spalle, perché sono incorsi nello sterminio. Non sarò più con voi, se non estirperete da voi la causa dello sterminio.
13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction.	13 Su, santifica il popolo e di’ loro: “Per domani santificatevi, perché così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele: C’è una causa di sterminio in mezzo a te, Israele! Tu non potrai resistere ai tuoi nemici, finché non eliminerete da voi la causa dello sterminio.
14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man.	14 Vi accosterete dunque domattina divisi per tribù: la tribù che il Signore avrà designato con la sorte si accosterà per casati e il casato che il Signore avrà designato si accosterà per famiglie; la famiglia che il Signore avrà designato si accosterà per individui.
15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." '	15 Colui che risulterà causa di sterminio sarà bruciato lui e tutte le sue cose, per aver trasgredito il patto del Signore e aver commesso un’infamia in Israele”».
16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah.	16 Giosuè si alzò di buon mattino e fece accostare Israele per tribù e venne sorteggiata la tribù di Giuda.
17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi.	17 Fece accostare i casati di Giuda e venne sorteggiato il casato degli Zerachiti; fece accostare il casato degli Zerachiti per famiglie e venne sorteggiato Zabdì;
18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.	18 fece accostare la sua famiglia per individui e venne sorteggiato Acan, figlio di Carmì, figlio di Zabdì, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda.
19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.'	19 Disse allora Giosuè ad Acan: «Figlio mio, da’ gloria al Signore, Dio d’Israele, e rendigli lode. Raccontami dunque che cosa hai fatto, non me lo nascondere».
20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done.	20 Acan rispose a Giosuè: «È vero, io ho peccato contro il Signore, Dio d’Israele, e ho fatto quanto vi dirò:
21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.'	21 avevo visto nel bottino un bel mantello di Sinar, duecento sicli d’argento e un lingotto d’oro del peso di cinquanta sicli. Li ho desiderati e me li sono presi, ed eccoli nascosti in terra al centro della mia tenda, e l’argento è sotto».
22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath.	22 Giosuè mandò incaricati che corsero alla tenda, ed ecco, tutto era nascosto nella tenda e l’argento era sotto.
23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh.	23 Presero il tutto dalla tenda, lo portarono a Giosuè e a tutti gli Israeliti e lo deposero davanti al Signore.
24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him.	24 Giosuè allora prese Acan figlio di Zerach con l’argento, il mantello, il lingotto d’oro, i suoi figli, le sue figlie, i suoi buoi, i suoi asini, le sue pecore, la sua tenda e quanto gli apparteneva. Tutto Israele era con lui ed egli li condusse alla valle di Acor.
25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them).	25 Giosuè disse: «Come tu ci hai arrecato disgrazia, così oggi il Signore l’arrechi a te!». Tutti gli Israeliti lo lapidarono. Poi li bruciarono tutti e li coprirono di pietre.
26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today.	26 Eressero poi sul posto un gran mucchio di pietre, che esiste ancora oggi. E il Signore placò l’ardore della sua ira. Perciò quel luogo si chiama valle di Acor fino ad oggi.
