1 The portion of the tribe of Manasseh, who was in fact Joseph's first-born -- went to Machir, Manasseh'sfirst-born, father of Gilead, for he was a warrior; he had Gilead and Bashan.	1 Makir était le premier-né de Manassé, qui lui-même était le premier-né de Joseph. C’était un homme de guerre et il reçut en héritage le Galaad et le Bashan.
2 The other sons of Manasseh had theirs, by clans: for the sons of Abiezer, for the sons of Helek, for thesons of Asriel, for the sons of Shechem, for the sons of Hepher, and for the sons of Shemida: these were themale children of Manasseh son of Joseph, by clans.	2 Voici à présent ce qui concerne les autres fils de Manassé et leurs clans: les fils d’Abiézer, les fils de Hélek, les fils d’Asriel, les fils de Chékem, les fils de Héfer et les fils de Chémida (c’étaient les enfants mâles de Manassé, fils de Joseph, selon leurs clans).
3 Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons but onlydaughters, whose names were these: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.	3 Séloféhad, fils de Héfer, fils de Galaad, fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, n’avait pas de fils, mais seulement des filles. Elles s’appelaient: Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milka et Tirsa.
4 These approached the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun and the leaders, and said, 'Yahweh orderedMoses to give us a heritage among our brothers.' In compliance with Yahweh's order, therefore, they were given a heritage among their father's brothers.	4 Elles vinrent donc trouver le prêtre Éléazar et Josué, fils de Noun, ainsi que tous les chefs. Elles leur dirent: “Yahvé a ordonné à Moïse de nous donner un héritage au milieu de nos frères.” On leur donna donc un héritage au milieu des frères de leur père, selon l’ordre de Yahvé.
5 In this way ten portions fel to Manasseh, apart from Gilead and Bashan lying on the further side of theJordan,	5 Manassé reçut donc 10 parts en plus du pays de Galaad et du Bashan de l’autre côté du Jourdain,
6 since Manasseh's daughters received a heritage as well as his sons. Gilead itself belonged toManasseh's other sons.	6 puisque les filles de Manassé reçurent un héritage au milieu de ses fils. Le Galaad appartenait aux autres fils de Manassé.
7 On the side of Asher, the frontier of Manasseh was the Michmethath, which is opposite Shechem, andthence continued to the right to Jashib, which is at the spring of Tappuah.	7 Du côté d’Asher, le Mikmétat qui fait face à Sichem formait la frontière. Celle-ci descendait au sud vers Yachib qui est la source de Tapoua.
8 The territory of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah on Manasseh's border belonged to thesons of Ephraim.	8 Manassé possédait en effet la région de Tapoua, mais Tapoua sur la frontière de Manassé appartenait à Éphraïm.
9 The boundary went down to the Torrent of Kanah; south of the Torrent were the towns of Ephraim,excluding those owned by Ephraim among the towns of Manasseh; the boundary of Manasseh was north of theTorrent and reached as far as the sea.	9 La frontière se prolongeait par le torrent de Kana; au sud du torrent se trouvaient les villes d’Éphraïm, outre celles que possédait Éphraïm au milieu des villes de Manassé. La frontière de Manassé passait au nord du torrent et s’achevait à la mer.
10 The south belonged to Ephraim and the north to Manasseh and reached as far as the sea; theytouched Asher to the north and Issachar to the east.	10 Le sud appartenait à Éphraïm et le nord à Manassé, et la mer en faisait la limite. Il touchait Asher au nord et Issacar à l’est.
11 With Issachar and Asher, Manasseh shared Beth-Shean and its dependent towns, Ibleam and itsdependent towns, the inhabitants of Dor and of its dependent towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and Megiddoand of their dependent towns: the Three of the Slopes.	11 Dans le territoire d’Issacar et dans celui d’Asher, Manassé possédait Beth-Chéan et les villes qui en dépendent, Yibléam et les villes qui en dépendent, les habitants de Dor et des villes qui en dépendent, les habitants de Tanak et de Méguiddo et les villes qui en dépendent (ces trois dernières villes sont situées sur des hauteurs).
12 But because the sons of Manasseh could not take possession of these towns, the Canaanitesmanaged to live on in that territory.	12 Comme les fils de Manassé ne purent s’emparer de ces villes, les Cananéens demeurèrent dans le pays.
13 When, however, the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour,though they never dispossessed them.	13 Cependant, lorsqu’ils furent devenus plus forts, les Israélites soumirent les Cananéens à la corvée, mais ils ne les chassèrent pas.
14 The sons of Joseph spoke as follows to Joshua, 'Why have you given me only one share, only oneportion, as heritage, when I am a numerous people, since Yahweh has so blessed me?'	14 Les fils de Joseph dirent à Josué: “Pourquoi nous as-tu donné pour héritage un seul lot et une seule part, alors que nous formons un peuple nombreux, tellement Yahvé nous a bénis jusqu’à ce jour.”
15 Joshua replied, 'If your people are so many, go up to the wooded area and clear space for yourselvesin the area belonging to the Perizzites and Rephaim, since the highlands of Ephraim are too small for you.'	15 Josué leur répondit: “Si vous êtes un peuple nombreux, montez vers la forêt des Périsites et des Réphaïm. Défrichez-la pour votre compte, si la montagne d’Éphraïm est trop petite pour vous.”
16 The sons of Joseph replied, 'The highlands are not enough for us, and what is more, al theCanaanites living on the land of the plain have iron chariots, so do those in Beth-Shean and its dependenttowns, and those in the plain of Jezreel.'	16 Les fils de Joseph lui dirent: “La montagne ne nous suffit pas, mais les Cananéens qui habitent la plaine ont tous des chars de fer, aussi bien ceux qui habitent à Beth-Chéan et dans ses villages, que ceux qui habitent dans la plaine d’Yizréel.”
17 Joshua said to the House of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, 'You are a numerous people andyour strength is great; you wil not only have one share,	17 Alors Josué répondit à la maison de Joseph, à Éphraïm et à Manassé: “Vous êtes un peuple nombreux et vous êtes très forts. Il n’y aura pour vous qu’une seule part.
18 but a mountain wil be yours as well; even if it is a forest, you can clear it and its territories will beyours. And you will dispossess the Canaanites, although they have iron chariots and although they are strong.'	18 La montagne vous appartient: vous la déboiserez, puisque c’est une forêt, et elle sera à vous dans toute son étendue. Le Cananéen a beau être fort et avoir des chars de fer, vous la lui prendrez. ”
