1 Thessalonians 1

NEW JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonica which is in God the Father and the LordJesus Christ. Grace to you and peace.	1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace.
2 We always thank God for you al , mentioning you in our prayers continually.	2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly
3 We remember before our God and Father how active is the faith, how unsparing the love, howpersevering the hope which you have from our Lord Jesus Christ.	3 calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father,
4 We know, brothers loved by God, that you have been chosen,	4 knowing, brothers loved by God, how you were chosen.
5 because our gospel came to you not only in words, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and withgreat effect. And you observed the sort of life we lived when we were with you, which was for your sake.	5 For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the holy Spirit and (with) much conviction. You know what sort of people we were (among) you for your sake.
6 You took us and the Lord as your model, welcoming the word with the joy of the Holy Spirit in spite ofgreat hardship.	6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the holy Spirit,
7 And so you became an example to al believers in Macedonia and Achaia	7 so that you became a model for all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.
8 since it was from you that the word of the Lord rang out -- and not only throughout Macedonia andAchaia, for your faith in God has spread everywhere. We do not need to tel other people about it:	8 For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth not only in Macedonia and (in) Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything.
9 other people tel us how we started the work among you, how you broke with the worship of false godswhen you were converted to God and became servants of the living and true God;	9 For they themselves openly declare about us what sort of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God
10 and how you are now waiting for Jesus, his Son, whom he raised from the dead, to come fromheaven. It is he who saves us from the Retribution which is coming.	10 and to await his Son from heaven, whom he raised from (the) dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the coming wrath.
