Ephesians 5

1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,	1 Siate dunque imitatori di Dio come figlioli diletti,
2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.	2 e vivete nell'amore, come Cristo che ci ha amati e ha dato per noi se stesso a Dio in olocausto come ostia di soave odore.
3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!	3 La fornicazione, l'impurità di qualsiasi sorta, l'avarizia non si senta neppur nominare tra voi, come a santi si conviene.
4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.	4 Non oscenità, non discorsi sciocchi, non buffonerie, tutte cose indecenti; ma piuttosto il rendimento di grazie.
5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.	5 Perché, sappiatelo bene, nessuno che sia fornicatore, e impudico, o avaro (che è un idolatra) ha l'eredità nel regno di Cristo e di Dio.
6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.	6 Nessuno vi seduca con vani discorsi, perchè a causa di questi vien l'ira di Dio sugli increduli.
7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.	7 Dunque non vi associate con loro.
8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,	8 Una volta eravate tenebre, ma ora siete luce nel Signore. Vivete come figli della luce.
9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.	9 Or frutto della luce è tutto ciò che è buono, giusto e vero.
10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,	10 Esaminate ciò che piace al Signore
11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.	11 e non vogliate prendere parte alle opere infruttuose delle tenebre, anzi condannatele;
12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;	12 perchè le cose da essi fatte in segreto sono vergognose anche a dirsi,
13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated	13 ma tutte queste cose, che sono da riprovarsi, sono messe in chiaro dalla luce, essendo luce tutto ci che si manifesta.
14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.	14 Per questo è detto: Alzati tu che dormi, risorgi dai morti, e Cristo t'illuminerà.
15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.	15 Guardate adunque, fratelli, di condurvi cautamente: non da stolti,
16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.	16 ma da prudenti, riscattando il tempo, perchè i giorni sono cattivi;
17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.	17 quindi non siate imprudenti, ma studiate bene quale sia la volontà di Dio.
18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.	18 E non vi ubriacate col vino, sorgente di lussuria, ma siate ripieni di Spirito Santo.
19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,	19 Conversate tra di voi con salmi, inni e canti spirituali, cantando e salmeggiando di tutto cuore al Signore,
20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.	20 ringraziando sempre Dio e Padre nel nome del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo per ogni cosa.
21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.	21 Sottomettetevi gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo.
22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,	22 Le donne siano soggette ai loro mariti come al Signore,
23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;	23 perché l'uomo è capo della donna, come Cristo è capo della Chiesa, egli salvatore del corpo di lei.
24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.	24 Or come la Chiesa è soggetta a Cristo, così le donne devono star soggette ai loro mariti in ogni cosa.
25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her	25 Voi, uomini, amate le vostre mogli come anche Cristo amò la Chiesa, dando se stesso per lei,
26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,	26 per santificarla, purificandola col lavacro di acqua, mediante la parola di vita,
27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.	27 affinchè la Chiesa gli potesse comparire davanti gloriosa, senza macchia, senza grinze, senza altre cose del genere, ma santa ed immacolata.
28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.	28 Così appunto i mariti devono amare le loro mogli, come i propri corpi; chi ama la sua moglie ama se stesso.
29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,	29 Or nessuno ebbe mai in odio la propria carne, anzi la nutre e la circonda di cure, come anche Cristo fa per la Chiesa,
30 because we are parts of his Body.	30 giacchè noi siamo membra del corpo di lui, della sua carne, delle sue ossa.
31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.	31 Per questo l'uomo abbandonerà il padre e la madre e starà unito alla sua moglie, e i due diverranno una stessa carne.
32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.	32 Questo sacramento è grande, io però parlo riguardo a Cristo ed alla Chiesa.
33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.	33 Ma ciascuno di voi in particolare ami la sua moglie come se stesso, e la moglie porti rispetto al marito.
