Ephesians 5

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,	1 Fatevi dunque imitatori di Dio, quali figli carissimi,
2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.	2 e camminate nella carità, nel modo in cui anche Cristo ci ha amato e ha dato se stesso per noi, offrendosi a Dio in sacrificio di soave odore.
3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!	3 Di fornicazione e di ogni specie di impurità o di cupidigia neppure si parli fra voi – come deve essere tra santi –
4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.	4 né di volgarità, insulsaggini, trivialità, che sono cose sconvenienti. Piuttosto rendete grazie!
5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.	5 Perché, sappiatelo bene, nessun fornicatore, o impuro, o avaro – cioè nessun idolatra – ha in eredità il regno di Cristo e di Dio.
6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.	6 Nessuno vi inganni con parole vuote: per queste cose infatti l’ira di Dio viene sopra coloro che gli disobbediscono.
7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.	7 Non abbiate quindi niente in comune con loro.
8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,	8 Un tempo infatti eravate tenebra, ora siete luce nel Signore. Comportatevi perciò come figli della luce;
9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.	9 ora il frutto della luce consiste in ogni bontà, giustizia e verità.
10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,	10 Cercate di capire ciò che è gradito al Signore.
11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.	11 Non partecipate alle opere delle tenebre, che non danno frutto, ma piuttosto condannatele apertamente.
12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;	12 Di quanto viene fatto da costoro in segreto è vergognoso perfino parlare,
13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated	13 mentre tutte le cose apertamente condannate sono rivelate dalla luce: tutto quello che si manifesta è luce.
14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.	14 Per questo è detto: «Svégliati, tu che dormi, risorgi dai morti e Cristo ti illuminerà».
15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.	15 Fate dunque molta attenzione al vostro modo di vivere, comportandovi non da stolti ma da saggi,
16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.	16 facendo buon uso del tempo, perché i giorni sono cattivi.
17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.	17 Non siate perciò sconsiderati, ma sappiate comprendere qual è la volontà del Signore.
18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.	18 E non ubriacatevi di vino, che fa perdere il controllo di sé; siate invece ricolmi dello Spirito,
19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,	19 intrattenendovi fra voi con salmi, inni, canti ispirati, cantando e inneggiando al Signore con il vostro cuore,
20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.	20 rendendo continuamente grazie per ogni cosa a Dio Padre, nel nome del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.
21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.	21 Nel timore di Cristo, siate sottomessi gli uni agli altri:
22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,	22 le mogli lo siano ai loro mariti, come al Signore;
23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;	23 il marito infatti è capo della moglie, così come Cristo è capo della Chiesa, lui che è salvatore del corpo.
24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.	24 E come la Chiesa è sottomessa a Cristo, così anche le mogli lo siano ai loro mariti in tutto.
25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her	25 E voi, mariti, amate le vostre mogli, come anche Cristo ha amato la Chiesa e ha dato se stesso per lei,
26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,	26 per renderla santa, purificandola con il lavacro dell’acqua mediante la parola,
27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.	27 e per presentare a se stesso la Chiesa tutta gloriosa, senza macchia né ruga o alcunché di simile, ma santa e immacolata.
28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.	28 Così anche i mariti hanno il dovere di amare le mogli come il proprio corpo: chi ama la propria moglie, ama se stesso.
29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,	29 Nessuno infatti ha mai odiato la propria carne, anzi la nutre e la cura, come anche Cristo fa con la Chiesa,
30 because we are parts of his Body.	30 poiché siamo membra del suo corpo.
31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.	31 Per questo l’uomo lascerà il padre e la madre e si unirà a sua moglie e i due diventeranno una sola carne.
32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.	32 Questo mistero è grande: io lo dico in riferimento a Cristo e alla Chiesa!
33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.	33 Così anche voi: ciascuno da parte sua ami la propria moglie come se stesso, e la moglie sia rispettosa verso il marito.
