Ephesians 5

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,	1 Traten de imitar a Dios, como hijos suyos muy queridos.
2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.	2 Practiquen el amor, a ejemplo de Cristo, que nos amó y se entregó por nosotros, como ofrenda y sacrificio agradable a Dios.
3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!	3 En cuanto al pecado carnal y cualquier clase de impureza o avaricia, ni siquiera se los mencione entre ustedes, como conviene a los santos.
4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.	4 Lo mismo digo acerca de las obscenidades, de las malas conversaciones y de las bromas groseras: todo esto está fuera de lugar. Lo que deben hacer es dar gracias a Dios.
5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.	5 Y sépanlo bien: ni el hombre lujurioso, ni el impuro, ni el avaro –que es un idólatra– tendrán parte en la herencia del Reino de Cristo y de Dios.
6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.	6 No se dejen engañar por falsas razones: todo eso atrae la ira de Dios sobre los que se resisten a obedecerle.
7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.	7 No se hagan cómplices de los que obran así!
8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,	8 Antes, ustedes eran tinieblas, pero ahora son luz en el Señor. Vivan como hijos de la luz.
9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.	9 Ahora bien, el fruto de la luz es la bondad, la justicia y la verdad.
10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,	10 Sepan discernir lo que agrada al Señor,
11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.	11 y no participen de las obras estériles de las tinieblas; al contrario, pónganlas en evidencia.
12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;	12 Es verdad que resulta vergonzoso aun mencionar las cosas que esa gente hace ocultamente.
13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated	13 Pero cuando se las pone de manifiesto, aparecen iluminadas por la luz,
14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.	14 porque todo lo que se pone de manifiesto es luz. Por eso se dice: Despiértate, tú que duermes, levántate de entre los muertos, y Cristo te iluminará.
15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.	15 Cuiden mucho su conducta y no procedan como necios, sino como personas sensatas
16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.	16 que saben aprovechar bien el momento presente, porque estos tiempos son malos.
17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.	17 No sean irresponsables, sino traten de saber cuál es la voluntad del Señor.
18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.	18 No abusen del vino que lleva al libertinaje; más bien, llénense del Espíritu Santo.
19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,	19 Cuando se reúnan, reciten salmos, himnos y cantos espirituales, cantando y celebrando al Señor de todo corazón.
20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.	20 Siempre y por cualquier motivo, den gracias a Dios, nuestro Padre, en nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.	21 Sométanse los unos a los otros, por consideración a Cristo.
22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,	22 Las mujeres deben respetar a su marido como al Señor,
23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;	23 porque el varón es la cabeza de la mujer, como Cristo es la Cabeza y el Salvador de la Iglesia, que es su Cuerpo.
24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.	24 Así como la Iglesia está sometida a Cristo, de la misma manera las mujeres deben respetar en todo a su marido.
25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her	25 Maridos, amen a su esposa, como Cristo amó a la Iglesia y se entregó por ella,
26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,	26 para santificarla. El la purificó con el bautismo del agua y la palabra,
27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.	27 porque quiso para sí una Iglesia resplandeciente, sin mancha ni arruga y sin ningún defecto, sino santa e inmaculada.
28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.	28 Del mismo modo, los maridos deben amar a su mujer como a su propio cuerpo. El que ama a su esposa se ama a sí mismo.
29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,	29 Nadie menosprecia a su propio cuerpo, sino que lo alimenta y lo cuida. Así hace Cristo por la Iglesia,
30 because we are parts of his Body.	30 por nosotros, que somos los miembros de su Cuerpo.
31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.	31 Por eso, el hombre dejará a su padre y a su madre para unirse a su mujer, y los dos serán una sola carne.
32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.	32 Este es un gran misterio: y yo digo que se refiere a Cristo y a la Iglesia.
33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.	33 En cuanto a ustedes, cada uno debe amar a su mujer como así mismo, y la esposa debe respetar a su marido.
