Ephesians 5

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,	1 Sed, pues, imitadores de Dios, como hijos queridos,
2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.	2 y vivid en el amor como Cristo os amó y se entregó por nosotros como oblación y víctima de suave aroma.
3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!	3 La fornicación, y toda impureza o codicia, ni siquiera se mencione entre vosotros, como conviene a los santos.
4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.	4 Lo mismo de la grosería, las necedades o las chocarrerías, cosas que no están bien; sino más bien, acciones de gracias.
5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.	5 Porque tened entendido que ningún fornicario o impuro o codicioso - que es ser idólatra - participará en la herencia del Reino de Cristo y de Dios.
6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.	6 Que nadie os engañe con vanas razones, pues por eso viene le cólera de Dios sobre los rebeldes.
7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.	7 No tengáis parte con ellos.
8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,	8 Porque en otro tiempo fuisteis tinieblas; mas ahora sois luz en el Señor. Vivid como hijos de la luz;
9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.	9 pues el fruto de la luz consiste en toda bondad, justicia y verdad.
10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,	10 Examinad qué es lo que agrada al Señor,
11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.	11 y no participéis en las obras infructuosas de las tinieblas, antes bien, denunciadlas.
12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;	12 Cierto que ya sólo el mencionar las cosas que hacen ocultamente da vergüenza;
13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated	13 pero, al ser denunciadas, se manifiestan a la luz.
14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.	14 Pues todo lo que queda manifiesto es luz. Por eso se dice: Despierta tú que duermes, y levántate de entre los muertos, y te iluminará Cristo.
15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.	15 Así pues, mirad atentamente cómo vivís; que no sea como imprudentes, sino como prudentes;
16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.	16 aprovechando bien el tiempo presente, porque los días son malos.
17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.	17 Por tanto, no seáis insensatos, sino comprended cuál es la voluntad de Señor.
18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.	18 No os embriaguéis con vino, que es causa de libertinaje; llenaos más bien del Espíritu.
19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,	19 Recitad entre vosotros salmos, himnos y cánticos inspirados; cantad y salmodiad en vuestro corazón al Señor,
20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.	20 dando gracias continuamente y por todo a Dios Padre, en nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.	21 Sed sumisos los unos a los otros en el temor de Cristo.
22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,	22 Las mujeres a sus maridos, como al Señor,
23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;	23 porque el marido es cabeza de la mujer, como Cristo es Cabeza de la Iglesia, el salvador del Cuerpo.
24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.	24 Así como la Iglesia está sumisa a Cristo, así también las mujeres deben estarlo a sus maridos en todo.
25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her	25 Maridos, amad a vuestras mujeres como Cristo amó a la Iglesia y se entregó a sí mismo por ella,
26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,	26 para santificarla, purificándola mediante el baño del agua, en virtud de la palabra,
27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.	27 y presentársela resplandeciente a sí mismo; sin que tenga mancha ni arruga ni cosa parecida, sino que sea santa e inmaculada.
28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.	28 Así deben amar los maridos a sus mujeres como a sus propios cuerpos. El que ama a su mujer se ama a sí mismo.
29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,	29 Porque nadie aborreció jamás su propia carne; antes bien, la alimenta y la cuida con cariño, lo mismo que Cristo a la Iglesia,
30 because we are parts of his Body.	30 pues somos miembros de su Cuerpo.
31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.	31 Por eso dejará el hombre a su padre y a su madre y se unirá a su mujer, y los dos se harán una sola carne.
32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.	32 Gran misterio es éste, lo digo respecto a Cristo y la Iglesia.
33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.	33 En todo caso, en cuanto a vosotros, que cada uno ame a su mujer como a sí mismo; y la mujer, que respete al marido.
