1 Then what do we say about Abraham, the ancestor from whom we are descended physical y?	1 Que (justificação) diremos, pois, ter obtido Abraão, nosso pai segundo a carne?
2 If Abraham had been justified because of what he had done, then he would have had something toboast about. But not before God:	2 Certamente, se Abraão foi justificado pelas obras (naturais), tem de que se gloriar, mas não junto de Deus.
3 does not scripture say: Abraham put his faith in God and this was reckoned to him as uprightness?	3 Pois, que diz a Escritura? Abraão creu em Deus, e lhe foi tido em conta para a justiça (Gn. 5, 6).
4 Now, when someone works, the wages for this are not considered as a favour but as due;	4 Ora ao que trabalha, não se lhe conta o salário como uma graça, mas como uma dívida.
5 however, when someone, without working, puts faith in the one who justifies the godless, it is this faiththat is reckoned as uprightness.	5 Porém ao que não opera, mas crê naquele que justifica o impio, a sua fé (lhe) é imputada como justiça.
6 David, too, says the same: he cal s someone blessed if God attributes uprightness to that person,apart from any action undertaken:	6 Como também David proclama bem-aventurado o homem, a quem Deus atribui justiça independentemente das obras.
7 How blessed are those whose offence is forgiven, whose sin is blotted out.	7 Bem-aventurados aqueles, cujas iniquidades foram perdoadas, e cujos pecados foram cobertos.
8 How blessed are those to whom the Lord imputes no guilt.	8 Bem-aventurado o homem, a quem o Senhor não imputou pecado (Ps. 31, 1-2).
9 Is this blessing only for the circumcised, or is it said of the uncircumcised as wel ? Wel , we said ofAbraham that his faith was reckoned to him as uprightness.	9 Ora esta bem-aventurança é somente para os circuncidados, ou também para os incircuncidados? Porquanto, dizemos que a fé foi imputada a Abraão como justiça.
10 Now how did this come about? When he was already circumcised, or before he had beencircumcised? Not when he had been circumcised, but while he was still uncircumcised;	10 Como lhe foi ela, pois, imputada? Depois da circuncisão, ou antes da circuncisão? Não foi depois da circuncisão, mas antes dela.
11 and circumcision was given to him later, as a sign and a guarantee that the faith which he had whilestill uncircumcised was reckoned to him as uprightness. In this way, Abraham was to be the ancestor of albelievers who are uncircumcised, so that they might be reckoned as upright;	11 E recebeu o sinal da circuncisão como selo da justiça, recebida pela fé antes da circuncisão, a fim de que fosse pai de todos os crentes incircuncisos, para que também a eles lhes seja imputada a justiça (sem ser precisa a circuncisão),
12 as well as the ancestor of those of the circumcision who not only have their circumcision but who alsofol ow our ancestor Abraham along the path of faith that he trod before he was circumcised.	12 e seja pai dos circuncisos, daqueles que não têm sòmente a circuncisão, mas, além disso, seguem as pisadas da fé que teve nosso pai Abraão antes de ser circuncidado.
13 For the promise to Abraham and his descendants that he should inherit the world was not through theLaw, but through the uprightness of faith.	13 E assim a promessa a Abraão e à sua posteridade, de que seria herdeiro do mundo, não foi em virtude da lei, mas em virtude da justiça da fé.
14 For if it is those who live by the Law who wil gain the inheritance, faith is worthless and the promise iswithout force;	14 Com efeito, se os (que vêm) da lei é que são os (únicos) herdeiros, é inutil a fé, e sem efeito a promessa.
15 for the Law produces nothing but God's retribution, and it is only where there is no Law that it ispossible to live without breaking the Law.	15 Porque a lei produz a ira. Onde, pois, não há lei, não há trangressão.
16 That is why the promise is to faith, so that it comes as a free gift and is secure for al thedescendants, not only those who rely on the Law but al those others who rely on the faith of Abraham, theancestor of us all	16 Por isso da fé é (que vem) a herança, a fim de que (esta) seja gratuita e certa para toda a posteridade, não sòmente para o que é da lei, mas também para o que é da fé de Abraão, que é pai de todos nós,
17 (as scripture says: I have made you the father of many nations). Abraham is our father in the eyes ofGod, in whom he put his faith, and who brings the dead to life and cal s into existence what does not yet exist.	17 segundo está escrito: Eu te constitui pai de muitas gentes (Gn. 17, 6). Ele é pai, diante de Deus, em quem acreditou, o qual dá vida aos mortos e chama à existência o que não existe.
18 Though there seemed no hope, he hoped and believed that he was to become father of many nationsin fulfilment of the promise: Just so wil your descendants be.	18 Esperando contra toda a esperança, teve fé e tornou-se, por isso, pai de muitas gentes, segundo o que lhe foi dito: Assim será a tua descendência (Gn. 15, 5).
19 Even the thought that his body was as good as dead -- he was about a hundred years old -- and thatSarah's womb was dead too did not shake his faith.	19 E, sem vacilar na fé, não considerou nem o seu corpo amortecido, sendo já de quase cem anos, nem o seio de Sara, já sem vida (para conceber).
20 Counting on the promise of God, he did not doubt or disbelieve, but drew strength from faith and gaveglory to God,	20 Não hesitou nem teve falta de fé, perante a promessa de Deus, mas flrmou-se na fé, dando glória a Deus,
21 ful y convinced that whatever God promised he has the power to perform.	21 plenamente convencido de que é poderoso para cumprir tudo o que prometeu.
22 This is the faith that was reckoned to him as uprightness.	22 Por isso, (isto) lhe foi imputado como justiça.
23 And the word 'reckoned' in scripture applies not only to him;	23 Ora não está escrito sòmente por causa dele que lhe foi imputado (como justiça)
24 it is there for our sake too -- our faith, too, wil be 'reckoned'	24 mas tamhém por nós, a quem será imputado, a nós que cremos naquele que ressuscitou doe mortos, Jesus Cristo Nosso Senhor,
25 because we believe in him who raised from the dead our Lord Jesus who was handed over to deathfor our sins and raised to life for our justification.	25 o qual foi entregue pelos nossos pecados e ressuscitou para nossa justificação.
