Then what do we say about Abraham, the ancestor from whom we are descended physical y?1 Che diremo dunque di Abramo, nostro progenitore secondo la carne?
If Abraham had been justified because of what he had done, then he would have had something toboast about. But not before God:2 Poiché, se Abramo fu giustificato in virtù delle opere, egli ha di che gloriarsi; non però in Dio!
does not scripture say: Abraham put his faith in God and this was reckoned to him as uprightness?3 Che cosa dice, infatti, la Scrittura? Abramo credette a Dio e ciò gli fu contato come giustizia.
Now, when someone works, the wages for this are not considered as a favour but as due;4 Ora a chi compie un lavoro il salario on viene contato a titolo di favore, ma a titolo di diritto;
however, when someone, without working, puts faith in the one who justifies the godless, it is this faiththat is reckoned as uprightness.5 mentre per chi, senza compjere un lavoro, crede in colui che giustifica l'empio, è la fede ad essere contata come giustizia.
David, too, says the same: he cal s someone blessed if God attributes uprightness to that person,apart from any action undertaken:6 Così anche Davide proclama felice l’uomo a cui Dio conferisce la giustizia indipendentemente dalle opere:
How blessed are those whose offence is forgiven, whose sin is blotted out.7 Beati coloro a cui furono rimesse le iniquità e i cui peccati furono coperti.
How blessed are those to whom the Lord imputes no guilt.8 Beato l'uomo al quale il Signore non imputa il peccato.
Is this blessing only for the circumcised, or is it said of the uncircumcised as wel ? Wel , we said ofAbraham that his faith was reckoned to him as uprightness.9 Ebbene, questa dichiarazione di felicità è rivolta solo ai circoncisi o anche agli incirconcisi? Diciamo, infatti, che la fede fu contata ad Abramo come giustizia.
Now how did this come about? When he was already circumcised, or before he had beencircumcised? Not when he had been circumcised, but while he was still uncircumcised;10 In che stato, dunque, gli fu essa contata? Quando era circonciso o da incirconciso? Non da circonciso, ma quand’era ancora incirconciso:
and circumcision was given to him later, as a sign and a guarantee that the faith which he had whilestill uncircumcised was reckoned to him as uprightness. In this way, Abraham was to be the ancestor of albelievers who are uncircumcised, so that they might be reckoned as upright;11 il segno della circoncisione lo ricevette quale sigillo della giustizia ottenuta quand’era ancora incirconciso, mediante la fede; così da poter essere padre di tutti coloro che avrebbero creduto senza essere circoncisi, affinché anche a questi fosse contata la giustizia;
as well as the ancestor of those of the circumcision who not only have their circumcision but who alsofol ow our ancestor Abraham along the path of faith that he trod before he was circumcised.12 padre anche nella circoncisione di coloro che non sì fondano solo sulla circoncisione, ma ricalcano altresì le orme della fede di Abramo, nostro padre ancor prima della circoncisione.
For the promise to Abraham and his descendants that he should inherit the world was not through theLaw, but through the uprightness of faith.13 Di fatto la promessa che avrebbe avuto il mondo in eredità fu fatta ad Abramo e alla sua discendenza non dipendentemente dalla legge, ma dalla giustizia della fede;
For if it is those who live by the Law who wil gain the inheritance, faith is worthless and the promise iswithout force;14 poiché, se eredi si è in base alla legge, la fede risulta svuotata e la promessa resa inane.
for the Law produces nothing but God's retribution, and it is only where there is no Law that it ispossible to live without breaking the Law.15 Tra l’altro, poi, la legge produce l’ira; mentre, dove non si ha legge, neppure v’è trasgressione.
That is why the promise is to faith, so that it comes as a free gift and is secure for al thedescendants, not only those who rely on the Law but al those others who rely on the faith of Abraham, theancestor of us all16 Tutto dipende quindi solo dalla fede, onde sia a puro titolo di grazia e la promessa resti in tal modo salda per tutta la posterità che si appoggia non sulla legge soltanto, ma altresì sulla fede di Abramo, padre di noi tutti,
(as scripture says: I have made you the father of many nations). Abraham is our father in the eyes ofGod, in whom he put his faith, and who brings the dead to life and cal s into existence what does not yet exist.17 come sta scritto: Ti ho fatto padre di molti popoli, dinanzi a Dio cui egli credette come a colui che dà la vita ai morti e chiama all’esistenza ciò che non esiste.
Though there seemed no hope, he hoped and believed that he was to become father of many nationsin fulfilment of the promise: Just so wil your descendants be.18 Abramo, sperando contro ogni speranza, credette e divenne così padre di molti popoli, secondo quanto gli fu detto: Tale sarà la tua discendenza.
Even the thought that his body was as good as dead -- he was about a hundred years old -- and thatSarah's womb was dead too did not shake his faith.19 Senza venir meno nella fede considerò il suo corpo già divenuto come morto, avendo egli quasi cent'anni, e il seno di Sara isterilito,
Counting on the promise of God, he did not doubt or disbelieve, but drew strength from faith and gaveglory to God,20 ma non titubò nell’incredulità di fronte alla promessa di Dio, si rinvigorì anzi nella fede e diede gloria al Signore,
ful y convinced that whatever God promised he has the power to perform.21 ben persuaso che quanto egli aveva promesso era pure in grado di attuarlo.
This is the faith that was reckoned to him as uprightness.22 Tutto ciò appunto gli fu contato come giustizia.
And the word 'reckoned' in scripture applies not only to him;23 Ora, che gli fu contato; non fu scritto solo per lui,
it is there for our sake too -- our faith, too, wil be 'reckoned'24 ma anche per noi; per noi cui sarà contata la fede, per noi che crediamo in colui che risuscitò dai morti Gesù, nostro Signore,
because we believe in him who raised from the dead our Lord Jesus who was handed over to deathfor our sins and raised to life for our justification.25 consegnato per i nostri peccati e risuscitato per la nostra giustificazione.
