NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Brothers, my dearest wish and my prayer to God is for them, that they may be saved.1 Fratres, voluntas quidem cordis mei, et obsecratio ad Deum, fit pro illis in salutem.
I readily testify to their fervour for God, but it is misguided.2 Testimonium enim perhibeo illis quod æmulationem Dei habent, sed non secundum scientiam.
Not recognising God's saving justice they have tried to establish their own, instead of submitting tothe saving justice of God.3 Ignorantes enim justitiam Dei, et suam quærentes statuere, justitiæ Dei non sunt subjecti.
But the Law has found its fulfilment in Christ so that al who have faith wil be justified.4 Finis enim legis, Christus, ad justitiam omni credenti.
Moses writes of the saving justice that comes by the Law and says that whoever complies with it wilfind life in it.5 Moyses enim scripsit, quoniam justitiam, quæ ex lege est, qui fecerit homo, vivet in ea.
But the saving justice of faith says this: Do not think in your heart, 'Who wil go up to heaven?' --6 Quæ autem ex fide est justitia, sic dicit : Ne dixeris in corde tuo : Quis ascendet in cælum ? id est, Christum deducere :
that is to bring Christ down; or 'Who wil go down to the depths?' -- that is to bring Christ back fromthe dead.7 aut, Quis descendet in abyssum ? hoc est, Christum a mortuis revocare.
What does it say, then? The word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, theword of faith, the faith which we preach,8 Sed quid dicit Scriptura ? Prope est verbum in ore tuo, et in corde tuo : hoc est verbum fidei, quod prædicamus.
that if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe with your heart that Godraised him from the dead, then you wil be saved.9 Quia si confitearis in ore tuo Dominum Jesum, et in corde tuo credideris quod Deus illum suscitavit a mortuis, salvus eris.
It is by believing with the heart that you are justified, and by making the declaration with your lipsthat you are saved.10 Corde enim creditur ad justitiam : ore autem confessio fit ad salutem.
When scripture says: No one who relies on this wil be brought to disgrace,11 Dicit enim Scriptura : Omnis qui credit in illum, non confundetur.
it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: the same Lord is the Lord of all, and his generosityis offered to al who appeal to him,12 Non enim est distinctio Judæi et Græci : nam idem Dominus omnium, dives in omnes qui invocant illum.
for al who cal on the name of the Lord wil be saved.13 Omnis enim quicumque invocaverit nomen Domini, salvus erit.
How then are they to call on him if they have not come to believe in him? And how can they believein him if they have never heard of him? And how wil they hear of him unless there is a preacher for them?14 Quomodo ergo invocabunt, in quem non crediderunt ? aut quomodo credent ei, quem non audierunt ? quomodo autem audient sine prædicante ?
And how wil there be preachers if they are not sent? As scripture says: How beautiful are the feet ofthe messenger of good news.15 quomodo vero prædicabunt nisi mittantur ? sicut scriptum est : Quam speciosi pedes evangelizantium pacem, evangelizantium bona !
But in fact they have not all responded to the good news. As Isaiah says: Lord, who has givencredence to what they have heard from us?16 Sed non omnes obediunt Evangelio. Isaias enim dicit : Domine, quis credidit auditui nostro ?
But it is in that way faith comes, from hearing, and that means hearing the word of Christ.17 Ergo fides ex auditu, auditus autem per verbum Christi.
Wel then, I say, is it possible that they have not heard? Indeed they have: in the entire earth theirvoice stands out, their message reaches the whole world.18 Sed dico : Numquid non audierunt ? Et quidem in omnem terram exivit sonus eorum, et in fines orbis terræ verba eorum.
Wel , another question, then: is it possible that Israel did not understand? In the first place Mosessaid: I shal rouse you to jealousy with a non-people, I shal exasperate you with a stupid nation.19 Sed dico : Numquid Israël non cognovit ? Primus Moyses dicit : Ego ad æmulationem vos adducam in non gentem : in gentem insipientem, in iram vos mittam.
And Isaiah is even bold enough to say: I have let myself be found by those who did not seek me; Ihave let myself be seen by those who did not consult me;20 Isaias autem audet, et dicit : Inventus sum a non quærentibus me : palam apparui iis qui me non interrogabant.
and referring to Israel, he says: Al day long I have been stretching out my hands to a disobedientand rebel ious people.21 Ad Israël autem dicit : Tota die expandi manus meas ad populum non credentem, et contradicentem.
