NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
It was very early on the first day of the week and stil dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb1 And on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalen cometh early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre; and she saw the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. 'They have takenthe Lord out of the tomb,' she said, 'and we don't know where they have put him.'2 She ran, therefore, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith to them: They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb.3 Peter therefore went out, and that other disciple, and they came to the sepulchre.
They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first;4 And they both ran together, and that other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in.5 And when he stooped down, he saw the linen cloths lying; but yet he went not in.
Simon Peter, fol owing him, also came up, went into the tomb, saw the linen cloths lying on the ground6 Then cometh Simon Peter, following him, and went into the sepulchre, and saw the linen cloths lying,
and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in aplace by itself.7 And the napkin that had been about his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but apart, wrapped up into one place.
Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed.8 Then that other disciple also went in, who came first to the sepulchre: and he saw, and believed.
Til this moment they had stil not understood the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
The disciples then went back home.10 The disciples therefore departed again to their home.
But Mary was standing outside near the tomb, weeping. Then, as she wept, she stooped to lookinside,11 But Mary stood at the sepulchre without, weeping. Now as she was weeping, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, the other atthe feet.12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting, one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been laid.
They said, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' 'They have taken my Lord away,' she replied, 'and I don'tknow where they have put him.'13 They say to her: Woman, why weepest thou? She saith to them: Because they have taken away my Lord; and I know not where they have laid him.
As she said this she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not realise that itwas Jesus.14 When she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing; and she knew not that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?' Supposing him to be thegardener, she said, 'Sir, if you have taken him away, tel me where you have put him, and I will go and removehim.'15 Jesus saith to her: Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, thinking it was the gardener, saith to him: Sir, if thou hast taken him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
Jesus said, 'Mary!' She turned round then and said to him in Hebrew, 'Rabbuni!' -- which meansMaster.16 Jesus saith to her: Mary. She turning, saith to him: Rabboni (which is to say, Master).
Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to thebrothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'17 Jesus saith to her: Do not touch me, for I am not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brethren, and say to them: I ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and your God.
So Mary of Magdala told the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and that he had said these things toher.18 Mary Magdalen cometh, and telleth the disciples: I have seen the Lord, and these things he said to me.
In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room wherethe disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be withyou,'19 Now when it was late that same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them: Peace be to you.
and, after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy atseeing the Lord,20 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord.
and he said to them again, 'Peace be with you. 'As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.'21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.
After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit.22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.
If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.
Thomas, cal ed the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples said to him, 'We have seen the Lord,' but he answered, 'Unless I can see theholes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put myhand into his side, I refuse to believe.'25 The other disciples therefore said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.
Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors wereclosed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. 'Peace be with you,' he said.26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said: Peace be to you.
Then he spoke to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put itinto my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.'27 Then he saith to Thomas: Put in thy finger hither, and see my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and put it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing.
Thomas replied, 'My Lord and my God!'28 Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God.
Jesus said to him: You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen andyet believe.29 Jesus saith to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and have believed.
There were many other signs that Jesus worked in the sight of the disciples, but they are notrecorded in this book.30 Many other signs also did Jesus in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book.
These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and thatbelieving this you may have life through his name.31 But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name.
