New Jerusalem Bible La Biblia
Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged;1 Entonces Pilato tomó a Jesús y lo mandó azotar.
and after this, the soldiers twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on his head and dressed him ina purple robe.2 Y los soldados trenzaron una corona de espinas, se la pusieron en la cabeza y le echaron por encima un manto color púrpura;
They kept coming up to him and saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!' and slapping him in the face.3 y, acercándose a él, le decían: «¡Salve, rey de los judíos!». Y le daban bofetadas.
Pilate came outside again and said to them, 'Look, I am going to bring him out to you to let you seethat I find no case against him.'4 Pilato salió otra vez afuera y les dijo: «Mirad, os lo saco afuera para que sepáis que no encuentro en él ninguna culpa».
Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, 'Here is the man.'5 Y salió Jesús afuera, llevando la corona de espinas y el manto color púrpura. Pilato les dijo: «He aquí al hombre».
When they saw him, the chief priests and the guards shouted, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!' Pilate said,'Take him yourselves and crucify him: I find no case against him.'6 Cuando lo vieron los sumos sacerdotes y los guardias, gritaron: «¡Crucifícalo, crucifícalo!».
The Jews replied, 'We have a Law, and according to that Law he ought to be put to death, because hehas claimed to be Son of God.'7 Los judíos le contestaron: «Nosotros tenemos una ley, y según esa ley tiene que morir, porque se ha hecho Hijo de Dios».
When Pilate heard them say this his fears increased.8 Cuando Pilato oyó estas palabras, se asustó aún más.
Re-entering the Praetorium, he said to Jesus, 'Where do you come from?' But Jesus made no answer.9 Entró otra vez en el pretorio y dijo a Jesús: «¿De dónde eres tú?». Pero Jesús no le dio respuesta.
Pilate then said to him, 'Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to releaseyou and I have power to crucify you?'10 Y Pilato le dijo: «¿A mí no me hablas?
Jesus replied, 'You would have no power over me at al if it had not been given you from above; thatis why the man who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.'11 Jesús le contestó: «No tendrías ninguna autoridad sobre mí si no te la hubieran dado de lo alto.
From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him free, but the Jews shouted, 'If you set him free youare no friend of Caesar's; anyone who makes himself king is defying Caesar.'12 Desde este momento Pilato trataba de soltarlo, pero los judíos gritaban: «Si sueltas a ese, no eres amigo del César.
Hearing these words, Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated him on the chair of judgement at aplace cal ed the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha.13 Pilato entonces, al oír estas palabras, sacó afuera a Jesús y se sentó en el tribunal, en el sitio que llaman «el Enlosado» (en hebreo Gábbata).
It was the Day of Preparation, about the sixth hour. 'Here is your king,' said Pilate to the Jews.14 Era el día de la Preparación de la Pascua, hacia el mediodía. Y dijo Pilato a los judíos: «He aquí a vuestro rey».
But they shouted, 'Away with him, away with him, crucify him.' Pilate said, 'Shall I crucify your king?'The chief priests answered, 'We have no king except Caesar.'15 Ellos gritaron: «¡Fuera, fuera; crucifícalo!».
So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. They then took charge of Jesus,16 Entonces se lo entregó para que lo crucificaran. Tomaron a Jesús,
and carrying his own cross he went out to the Place of the Skul or, as it is cal ed in Hebrew,Golgotha,17 y, cargando él mismo con la cruz, salió al sitio llamado «de la Calavera» (que en hebreo se dice Gólgota),
where they crucified him with two others, one on either side, Jesus being in the middle.18 donde lo crucificaron; y con él a otros dos, uno a cada lado, y en medio, Jesús.
Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews'.19 Y Pilato escribió un letrero y lo puso encima de la cruz; en él estaba escrito: «Jesús, el Nazareno, el rey de los judíos».
This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was nearthe city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.20 Leyeron el letrero muchos judíos, porque estaba cerca el lugar donde crucificaron a Jesús, y estaba escrito en hebreo, latín y griego.
So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate, 'You should not write "King of the Jews", but that the mansaid, "I am King of the Jews". '21 Entonces los sumos sacerdotes de los judíos dijeron a Pilato: «No escribas “El rey de los judíos”, sino: “Este ha dicho: soy el rey de los judíos”».
Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.'22 Pilato les contestó: «Lo escrito, escrito está».
When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares,one for each soldier.
so they said to one another, 'Instead of tearing it, let's throw dice to decide who is to have it.' In thisway the words of scripture were fulfilled: They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothes.That is what the soldiers did.24 Y se dijeron: «No la rasguemos, sino echémosla a suerte, a ver a quién le toca».
Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,'Woman, this is your son.'26 Jesús, al ver a su madre y junto a ella al discípulo al que amaba, dijo a su madre: «Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo».
Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into hishome.27 Luego, dijo al discípulo: «Ahí tienes a tu madre».
After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed and, so that the scripture should becompletely fulfil ed, he said: I am thirsty.28 Después de esto, sabiendo Jesús que ya todo estaba cumplido, para que se cumpliera la Escritura, dijo: «Tengo sed».
A jar full of sour wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in the wine on a hyssop stick, theyheld it up to his mouth.29 Había allí un jarro lleno de vinagre.
After Jesus had taken the wine he said, 'It is fulfil ed'; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.30 Jesús, cuando tomó el vinagre, dijo: «Está cumplido». E, inclinando la cabeza, entregó el espíritu.
It was the Day of Preparation, and to avoid the bodies' remaining on the cross during the Sabbath --since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity -- the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and thebodies taken away.31 Los judíos entonces, como era el día de la Preparación, para que no se quedaran los cuerpos en la cruz el sábado, porque aquel sábado era un día grande, pidieron a Pilato que les quebraran las piernas y que los quitaran.
Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with himand then of the other.32 Fueron los soldados, le quebraron las piernas al primero y luego al otro que habían crucificado con él;
When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs33 pero al llegar a Jesús, viendo que ya había muerto, no le quebraron las piernas,
one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.34 sino que uno de los soldados, con la lanza, le traspasó el costado, y al punto salió sangre y agua.
This is the evidence of one who saw it -- true evidence, and he knows that what he says is true -- andhe gives it so that you may believe as wel .35 El que lo vio da testimonio, y su testimonio es verdadero, y él sabe que dice verdad, para que también vosotros creáis.
Because al this happened to fulfil the words of scripture: Not one bone of his wil be broken;36 Esto ocurrió para que se cumpliera la Escritura: «No le quebrarán un hueso»;
and again, in another place scripture says: They wil look to the one whom they have pierced.37 y en otro lugar la Escritura dice: «Mirarán al que traspasaron».
After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus -- though a secret one because he wasafraid of the Jews -- asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus.
Nicodemus came as wel -- the same one who had first come to Jesus at night-time -- and he broughta mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds.39 Llegó también Nicodemo, el que había ido a verlo de noche, y trajo unas cien libras de una mixtura de mirra y áloe.
They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, fol owing the Jewish burialcustom.40 Tomaron el cuerpo de Jesús y lo envolvieron en los lienzos con los aromas, según se acostumbra a enterrar entre los judíos.
At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in whichno one had yet been buried.41 Había un huerto en el sitio donde lo crucificaron, y en el huerto, un sepulcro nuevo donde nadie había sido enterrado todavía.
Since it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.42 Y como para los judíos era el día de la Preparación, y el sepulcro estaba cerca, pusieron allí a Jesús.
