1 Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged;	1 C’est alors que Pilate ordonne de prendre Jésus et de le flageller.
2 and after this, the soldiers twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on his head and dressed him ina purple robe.	2 Les soldats tressent une couronne avec des épines et la lui mettent sur la tête; ensuite ils lui jettent sur les épaules un manteau rouge, couleur royale,
3 They kept coming up to him and saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!' and slapping him in the face.	3 et ils commencent à se présenter devant lui en disant: "Salut, roi des Juifs!” Et ils lui donnent des gifles.
4 Pilate came outside again and said to them, 'Look, I am going to bring him out to you to let you seethat I find no case against him.'	4 Pilate sortit de nouveau pour dire aux Juifs: "Je vais vous l’amener dehors, mais sachez bien que je ne trouve rien à condamner chez lui.”
5 Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, 'Here is the man.'	5 Jésus sortit donc à l’extérieur avec la couronne d’épines et le manteau de pourpre, et Pilate leur dit: "Voici l’homme!”
6 When they saw him, the chief priests and the guards shouted, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!' Pilate said,'Take him yourselves and crucify him: I find no case against him.'	6 Mais dès qu’ils le voient, les chefs des prêtres se mettent à crier avec leurs policiers: "Mets-le en croix! Mets-le en croix!” Pilate leur dit: "Prenez-le vous-mêmes et mettez-le en croix, car moi, je ne lui trouve rien à condamner.”
7 The Jews replied, 'We have a Law, and according to that Law he ought to be put to death, because hehas claimed to be Son of God.'	7 Les Juifs lui répondent: "Nous avons une Loi, et d’après la Loi il doit mourir, car il s’est proclamé Fils de Dieu.”
8 When Pilate heard them say this his fears increased.	8 Lorsque Pilate entend cela, ses craintes augmentent.
9 Re-entering the Praetorium, he said to Jesus, 'Where do you come from?' But Jesus made no answer.	9 Il rentre dans le palais et dit à Jésus: "D’où es-tu?” Mais Jésus ne lui répond pas.
10 Pilate then said to him, 'Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to releaseyou and I have power to crucify you?'	10 Pilate lui dit alors: "Tu ne veux pas me parler? Ne sais-tu pas que je peux te relâcher et que je peux aussi te faire mettre en croix?”
11 Jesus replied, 'You would have no power over me at al if it had not been given you from above; thatis why the man who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.'	11 Jésus lui répond: "Tu n’aurais aucun pouvoir sur moi si tu ne l’avais pas reçu d’en haut. Pour la même raison, celui qui m’a livré entre tes mains porte un plus grand péché que toi.”
12 From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him free, but the Jews shouted, 'If you set him free youare no friend of Caesar's; anyone who makes himself king is defying Caesar.'	12 Dès ce moment Pilate cherchait à relâcher Jésus, mais les Juifs criaient: "Si tu le relâches, tu n’es pas l’ami du César. Ceux qui se proclament roi se rebellent contre le César.”
13 Hearing these words, Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated him on the chair of judgement at aplace cal ed the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha.	13 Quand Pilate entendit ces paroles, il leur amena Jésus dehors et le fit asseoir au tribunal à cet endroit qu’on appelle Lithostrotos (en hébreu on dit Gabbatha).
14 It was the Day of Preparation, about the sixth hour. 'Here is your king,' said Pilate to the Jews.	14 C’était le jour de la Préparation de la Pâque et il était environ midi. Pilate dit aux Juifs: "Voici votre roi.”
15 But they shouted, 'Away with him, away with him, crucify him.' Pilate said, 'Shall I crucify your king?'The chief priests answered, 'We have no king except Caesar.'	15 Mais eux criaient: "À mort! À mort! Crucifie-le!” Pilate leur dit: "C’est votre roi que je dois mettre en croix?” Et les chefs des prêtres répondirent: "Nous n’avons pas d’autre roi que le César!”
16 So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. They then took charge of Jesus,	16 Alors Pilate leur livra Jésus pour être crucifié. On emmena Jésus,
17 and carrying his own cross he went out to the Place of the Skul or, as it is cal ed in Hebrew,Golgotha,	17 et lui-même portait sa croix; il sortit et gagna l’endroit qu’on appelle le Crâne (en hébreu cela se dit Golgotha).
18 where they crucified him with two others, one on either side, Jesus being in the middle.	18 Là on le mit en croix, et avec lui deux autres, un de chaque côté: Jésus était au milieu.
19 Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews'.	19 Pilate avait fait écrire la sentence et elle était affichée sur la croix. Il était écrit: Jésus le Nazôréen, le roi des Juifs.
20 This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was nearthe city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.	20 Beaucoup de Juifs lurent cet écriteau car l’endroit où Jésus avait été crucifié était tout proche de la ville. Et c’était écrit en hébreu, en latin et en grec.
21 So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate, 'You should not write "King of the Jews", but that the mansaid, "I am King of the Jews". '	21 Les chefs des prêtres des Juifs protestèrent auprès de Pilate: "N’écris pas: Le roi des Juifs. Mets: Il a dit qu’il était le roi des Juifs.”
22 Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.'	22 Pilate leur répondit: "Ce que j’ai écrit, est écrit.”
23 When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares,one for each soldier. His undergarment was seamless, woven in one piece from neck to hem;	23 Quand les soldats mirent Jésus en croix, ils prirent ses vêtements et en firent quatre parts, une pour chaque soldat. Il y avait aussi la tunique; elle était sans couture, tissée d’une pièce de haut en bas.
24 so they said to one another, 'Instead of tearing it, let's throw dice to decide who is to have it.' In thisway the words of scripture were fulfilled: They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothes.That is what the soldiers did.	24 Ils se dirent donc entre eux: "Ne la déchirons pas: tirons-la au sort.” Ainsi devait s’accomplir l’Écriture; il y est dit en effet: Ils se sont partagé mes vêtements; ils ont tiré au sort ma tunique. C’est bien ce que firent les soldats.
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Maryof Magdala.	25 Debout près de la croix de Jésus, se tenaient sa mère et la sœur de sa mère, Marie femme de Clopas, et Marie de Magdala.
26 Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,'Woman, this is your son.'	26 Jésus vit la Mère et auprès d’elle le disciple qu’il aimait. Il dit à la Mère: "Femme, voici ton fils.”
27 Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into hishome.	27 Ensuite il dit au disciple: "Voici ta mère.” Et à partir de ce moment le disciple la reçut chez lui.
28 After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed and, so that the scripture should becompletely fulfil ed, he said: I am thirsty.	28 Avec cela, Jésus voyait que tout était accompli. Mais une parole de l’Écriture devait encore s’accomplir. Jésus dit: “J’ai soif.”
29 A jar full of sour wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in the wine on a hyssop stick, theyheld it up to his mouth.	29 Il y avait là un vase plein de vin fermenté et quelqu’un y plongea une éponge, la mit au bout d’une branche d’hysope et la porta à sa bouche.
30 After Jesus had taken the wine he said, 'It is fulfil ed'; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.	30 Jésus prit ce vin fermenté et alors il dit: "Tout est accompli.” Il inclina la tête et il remit l’esprit.
31 It was the Day of Preparation, and to avoid the bodies' remaining on the cross during the Sabbath --since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity -- the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and thebodies taken away.	31 Les Juifs ne voulaient pas que les corps des condamnés restent en croix durant le sabbat, d’autant plus que c’était la Préparation de la Pâque et ce sabbat était particulièrement important. Aussi les Juifs demandèrent-ils à Pilate de leur faire briser les jambes et de les enlever.
32 Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with himand then of the other.	32 Les soldats s’approchèrent donc de ceux qui étaient en croix avec Jésus et brisèrent les jambes au premier puis à l’autre.
33 When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs	33 Arrivés auprès de Jésus, ils virent qu’il était déjà mort et ils ne lui brisèrent pas les jambes.
34 one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.	34 Seulement l’un des soldats lui enfonça sa lance dans le côté et il en sortit du sang et de l’eau.
35 This is the evidence of one who saw it -- true evidence, and he knows that what he says is true -- andhe gives it so that you may believe as wel .	35 Celui qui l’a vu donne ici son témoignage pour que vous croyiez: son témoignage est vrai et Lui sait qu’il dit vrai.
36 Because al this happened to fulfil the words of scripture: Not one bone of his wil be broken;	36 Ainsi s’accomplissait une parole de l’Écriture: Pas un de ses os ne sera brisé.
37 and again, in another place scripture says: They wil look to the one whom they have pierced.	37 Et l’Écriture dit encore: Ils verront celui qu’ils ont transpercé.
38 After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus -- though a secret one because he wasafraid of the Jews -- asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission, so they came andtook it away.	38 Après cela, Joseph d’Arimathie intervint auprès de Pilate. Il était disciple de Jésus, mais il ne le disait pas par crainte des Juifs. Il demanda de pouvoir retirer le corps de Jésus et Pilate le lui accorda. Il vint donc pour retirer le corps.
39 Nicodemus came as wel -- the same one who had first come to Jesus at night-time -- and he broughta mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds.	39 Nicodème vint aussi, celui qui au début avait rencontré Jésus de nuit; il amenait près de 100 livres d’huile, de myrrhe et d’aloès.
40 They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, fol owing the Jewish burialcustom.	40 Ils prirent le corps de Jésus et l’enveloppèrent de bandes par-dessus les huiles parfumées, comme c’est la coutume chez les Juifs pour ensevelir.
41 At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in whichno one had yet been buried.	41 À côté de l’endroit où l’on avait mis Jésus en croix, il y avait un jardin, et dans ce jardin un tombeau neuf où personne encore n’avait été mis.
42 Since it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.	42 Comme la fête juive de la Préparation était sur le point de commencer, et que ce tombeau était juste à côté, Jésus y fut déposé.
