Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged;1 Therefore, Pilate then took Jesus into custody and scourged him.
and after this, the soldiers twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on his head and dressed him ina purple robe.2 And the soldiers, plaiting a crown of thorns, imposed it on his head. And they put a purple garment around him.
They kept coming up to him and saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!' and slapping him in the face.3 And they were approaching him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly.
Pilate came outside again and said to them, 'Look, I am going to bring him out to you to let you seethat I find no case against him.'4 Then Pilate went outside again, and he said to them: “Behold, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may realize that I find no case against him.”
Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, 'Here is the man.'5 (Then Jesus went out, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he said to them, “Behold the man.”
When they saw him, the chief priests and the guards shouted, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!' Pilate said,'Take him yourselves and crucify him: I find no case against him.'6 Therefore, when the high priests and the attendants had seen him, they cried out, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them: “Take him yourselves and crucify him. For I find no case against him.”
The Jews replied, 'We have a Law, and according to that Law he ought to be put to death, because hehas claimed to be Son of God.'7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law, he ought to die, for he has made himself the Son of God.”
When Pilate heard them say this his fears increased.8 Therefore, when Pilate had heard this word, he was more fearful.
Re-entering the Praetorium, he said to Jesus, 'Where do you come from?' But Jesus made no answer.9 And he entered into the praetorium again. And he said to Jesus. “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no response.
Pilate then said to him, 'Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to releaseyou and I have power to crucify you?'10 Therefore, Pilate said to him: “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to crucify you, and I have authority to release you?”
Jesus replied, 'You would have no power over me at al if it had not been given you from above; thatis why the man who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.'11 Jesus responded, “You would not have any authority over me, unless it were given to you from above. For this reason, he who has handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him free, but the Jews shouted, 'If you set him free youare no friend of Caesar's; anyone who makes himself king is defying Caesar.'12 And from then on, Pilate was seeking to release him. But the Jews were crying out, saying: “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. For anyone who makes himself a king contradicts Caesar.”
Hearing these words, Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated him on the chair of judgement at aplace cal ed the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha.13 Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus outside, and he sat down in the seat of judgment, in a place which is called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, it is called the Elevation.
It was the Day of Preparation, about the sixth hour. 'Here is your king,' said Pilate to the Jews.14 Now it was the preparation day of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your king.”
But they shouted, 'Away with him, away with him, crucify him.' Pilate said, 'Shall I crucify your king?'The chief priests answered, 'We have no king except Caesar.'15 But they were crying out: “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests responded, “We have no king except Caesar.”
So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. They then took charge of Jesus,16 Therefore, he then handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.
and carrying his own cross he went out to the Place of the Skul or, as it is cal ed in Hebrew,Golgotha,17 And carrying his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew it is called the Place of the Skull.
where they crucified him with two others, one on either side, Jesus being in the middle.18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.
Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews'.19 Then Pilate also wrote a title, and he set it above the cross. And it was written: JESUS THE NAZARENE, KING OF THE JEWS.
This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was nearthe city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.20 Therefore, many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was close to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.
So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate, 'You should not write "King of the Jews", but that the mansaid, "I am King of the Jews". '21 Then the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write, ‘King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’
Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.'22 Pilate responded, “What I have written, I have written.”
When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares, one for each soldier. His undergarment was seamless, woven in one piece from neck to hem;23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified him, took his garments, and they made four parts, one part to each soldier, and the tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven from above throughout the whole.
so they said to one another, 'Instead of tearing it, let's throw dice to decide who is to have it.' In thisway the words of scripture were fulfilled: They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothes. That is what the soldiers did.24 Then they said to one another, “Let us not cut it, but instead let us cast lots over it, to see whose it will be.” This was so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, saying: “They have distributed my garments among themselves, and for my vesture they have cast lots.” And indeed, the soldiers did these things.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Maryof Magdala.25 And standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, and Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,'Woman, this is your son.'26 Therefore, when Jesus had seen his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.”
Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into hishome.27 Next, he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own.
After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed and, so that the scripture should becompletely fulfil ed, he said: I am thirsty.28 After this, Jesus knew that all had been accomplished, so in order that the Scripture might be completed, he said, “I thirst.”
A jar full of sour wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in the wine on a hyssop stick, theyheld it up to his mouth.29 And there was a container placed there, full of vinegar. Then, placing a sponge full of vinegar around hyssop, they brought it to his mouth.
After Jesus had taken the wine he said, 'It is fulfil ed'; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.30 Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, said: “It is consummated.” And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit.
It was the Day of Preparation, and to avoid the bodies' remaining on the cross during the Sabbath --since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity -- the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and thebodies taken away.31 Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away.
Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with himand then of the other.32 Therefore, the soldiers approached, and, indeed, they broke the legs of the first one, and of the other who was crucified with him.
When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs33 But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.34 Instead, one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water.
This is the evidence of one who saw it -- true evidence, and he knows that what he says is true -- andhe gives it so that you may believe as wel .35 And he who saw this has offered testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you also may believe.
Because al this happened to fulfil the words of scripture: Not one bone of his wil be broken;36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “You shall not break a bone of him.”
and again, in another place scripture says: They wil look to the one whom they have pierced.37 And again, another Scripture says: “They shall look upon him, whom they have pierced.”
After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus -- though a secret one because he wasafraid of the Jews -- asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission, so they came andtook it away.38 Then, after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews) petitioned Pilate so that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. Therefore, he went and took away the body of Jesus.
Nicodemus came as wel -- the same one who had first come to Jesus at night-time -- and he broughta mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds.39 Now Nicodemus also arrived, (who had gone to Jesus at first by night) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe, weighing about seventy pounds.
They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, fol owing the Jewish burialcustom.40 Therefore, they took the body of Jesus, and they bound it with linen cloths and the aromatic spices, just as it is the manner of the Jews to bury.
At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in whichno one had yet been buried.41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden there was a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.
Since it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.42 Therefore, because of the preparation day of the Jews, since the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
