NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged;1 Tunc ergo apprehendit Pi latus Iesum et flagellavit.
and after this, the soldiers twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on his head and dressed him ina purple robe.2 Et milites,plectentes coronam de spinis, imposuerunt capiti eius et veste purpureacircumdederunt eum;
They kept coming up to him and saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!' and slapping him in the face.3 et veniebant ad eum et dicebant: “ Ave, rex Iudaeorum!”, et dabant ei alapas.
Pilate came outside again and said to them, 'Look, I am going to bring him out to you to let you seethat I find no case against him.'4 Et exiit iterum Pilatus foras et dicit eis: “ Ecceadduco vobis eum foras, ut cognoscatis quia in eo invenio causam nullam ”.
Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, 'Here is the man.'5 Exiit ergo Iesus foras, portans spineam coronam et purpureum vestimentum. Etdicit eis: “ Ecce homo! ”.
When they saw him, the chief priests and the guards shouted, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!' Pilate said,'Take him yourselves and crucify him: I find no case against him.'6 Cum ergo vidissent eum pontifices et ministri, clamaverunt dicentes: “ Crucifige, crucifige! ”. Dicit eis Pilatus: “Accipite eum vos et crucifigite; ego enim non invenio in eo causam ”.
The Jews replied, 'We have a Law, and according to that Law he ought to be put to death, because hehas claimed to be Son of God.'7 Responderunt ei Iudaei: “ Nos legem habemus, et secundum legem debet mori, quia Filium Dei se fecit ”.
When Pilate heard them say this his fears increased.8 Cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc sermonem, magis timuit
Re-entering the Praetorium, he said to Jesus, 'Where do you come from?' But Jesus made no answer.9 et ingressus estpraetorium iterum et dicit ad Iesum: “ Unde es tu? ”. Iesus autem responsumnon dedit ei.
Pilate then said to him, 'Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to releaseyou and I have power to crucify you?'10 Dicit ergo ei Pilatus: “ Mihi non loqueris? Nescis quiapotestatem habeo dimittere te et potestatem habeo crucifigere te? ”.
Jesus replied, 'You would have no power over me at al if it had not been given you from above; thatis why the man who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.'11 Respondit Iesus: “ Non haberes potestatem adversum me ullam, nisi tibi essetdatum desuper; propterea, qui tradidit me tibi, maius peccatum habet ”.
From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him free, but the Jews shouted, 'If you set him free youare no friend of Caesar's; anyone who makes himself king is defying Caesar.'12 Exinde quaerebat Pilatus dimittere eum; Iudaei autem clamabant dicentes: “Si hunc dimittis, non es amicus Caesaris! Omnis, qui se regem facit, contradicitCaesari ”.
Hearing these words, Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated him on the chair of judgement at aplace cal ed the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha.13 Pilatus ergo, cum audisset hos sermones, adduxit foras Iesum etsedit pro tribunali in locum, qui dicitur Lithostrotos, Hebraice autem Gabbatha.
It was the Day of Preparation, about the sixth hour. 'Here is your king,' said Pilate to the Jews.14 Erat autem Parasceve Paschae, hora erat quasi sexta. Et dicit Iudaeis: “Ecce rex vester! ”.
But they shouted, 'Away with him, away with him, crucify him.' Pilate said, 'Shall I crucify your king?'The chief priests answered, 'We have no king except Caesar.'15 Clamaverunt ergo illi: “ Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum!”. Dicit eis Pilatus: “ Regem vestrum crucifigam? ”. Responderuntpontifices: “ Non habemus regem, nisi Caesarem ”.
So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. They then took charge of Jesus,16 Tunc ergo tradidit eisillum, ut crucifigeretur. Susceperunt ergo Iesum.
and carrying his own cross he went out to the Place of the Skul or, as it is cal ed in Hebrew,Golgotha,17 Et baiulans sibi crucem exivit in eum, qui dicitur Calvariae locum, quodHebraice dicitur Golgotha,
where they crucified him with two others, one on either side, Jesus being in the middle.18 ubi eum crucifixerunt et cum eo alios duos hinc ethinc, medium autem Iesum.
Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews'.19 Scripsit autem et titulum Pilatus et posuit supercrucem; erat autem scriptum: “ Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum ”.
This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was nearthe city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.20 Hunc ergotitulum multi legerunt Iudaeorum, quia prope civitatem erat locus, ubicrucifixus est Iesus; et erat scriptum Hebraice, Latine, Graece.
So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate, 'You should not write "King of the Jews", but that the mansaid, "I am King of the Jews". '21 Dicebantergo Pilato pontifices Iudaeorum: “ Noli scribere: Rex Iudaeorum, sed: Ipsedixit: “Rex sum Iudaeorum” ”.
Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.'22 Respondit Pilatus: “ Quod scripsi, scripsi! ”.
When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares, one for each soldier. His undergarment was seamless, woven in one piece from neck to hem;23 Milites ergo cum crucifixissent Iesum, acceperunt vestimenta eius et feceruntquattuor partes, unicuique militi partem, et tunicam. Erat autem tunicainconsutilis, desuper contexta per totum.
so they said to one another, 'Instead of tearing it, let's throw dice to decide who is to have it.' In thisway the words of scripture were fulfilled: They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothes. That is what the soldiers did.24 Dixerunt ergo ad invicem: “ Nonscindamus eam, sed sortiamur de illa, cuius sit ”, ut Scriptura impleaturdicens:
“ Partiti sunt vestimenta mea sibi
et in vestem meam miserunt sortem ”.
Et milites quidem haec fecerunt.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Maryof Magdala.25 Stabant autem iuxta crucem Iesu mater eius et soror matris eius, MariaCleopae, et Maria Magdalene.
Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,'Woman, this is your son.'26 Cum vidisset ergo Iesus matrem et discipulumstantem, quem diligebat, dicit matri: “ Mulier, ecce filius tuus ”.
Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into hishome.27 Deinde dicit discipulo: “ Ecce mater tua ”. Et ex illa hora accepit eamdiscipulus in sua.
After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed and, so that the scripture should becompletely fulfil ed, he said: I am thirsty.28 Post hoc sciens Iesus quia iam omnia consummata sunt, ut consummareturScriptura, dicit: “ Sitio ”.
A jar full of sour wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in the wine on a hyssop stick, theyheld it up to his mouth.29 Vas positum erat aceto plenum; spongiam ergoplenam aceto hyssopo circumponentes, obtulerunt ori eius.
After Jesus had taken the wine he said, 'It is fulfil ed'; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.30 Cum ergo accepissetacetum, Iesus dixit: “ Consummatum est! ”. Et inclinato capite tradiditspiritum.
It was the Day of Preparation, and to avoid the bodies' remaining on the cross during the Sabbath --since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity -- the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and thebodies taken away.31 Iudaei ergo, quoniam Parasceve erat, ut non remanerent in cruce corporasabbato, erat enim magnus dies illius sabbati, rogaverunt Pilatum, utfrangerentur eorum crura, et tollerentur.
Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with himand then of the other.32 Venerunt ergo milites et primiquidem fregerunt crura et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo;
When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs33 ad Iesum autemcum venissent, ut viderunt eum iam mortuum, non fregerunt eius crura,
one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.34 sedunus militum lancea latus eius aperuit, et continuo exivit sanguis et aqua.
This is the evidence of one who saw it -- true evidence, and he knows that what he says is true -- andhe gives it so that you may believe as wel .35 Et qui vidit, testimonium perhibuit, et verum est eius testimonium, et ille scitquia vera dicit, ut et vos credatis.
Because al this happened to fulfil the words of scripture: Not one bone of his wil be broken;36 Facta sunt enim haec, ut Scripturaimpleatur: “ Os non comminuetur eius ”,
and again, in another place scripture says: They wil look to the one whom they have pierced.37 et iterum alia Scriptura dicit:“ Videbunt in quem transfixerunt ”.
After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus -- though a secret one because he wasafraid of the Jews -- asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission, so they came andtook it away.38 Post haec autem rogavit Pilatum Ioseph ab Arimathaea, qui erat discipulusIesu, occultus autem propter metum Iudaeorum, ut tolleret corpus Iesu; etpermisit Pilatus. Venit ergo et tulit corpus eius.
Nicodemus came as wel -- the same one who had first come to Jesus at night-time -- and he broughta mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds.39 Venit autem et Nicodemus, qui venerat ad eum nocte primum, ferens mixturam myrrhae et aloes quasi librascentum.
They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, fol owing the Jewish burialcustom.40 Acceperunt ergo corpus Iesu et ligaverunt illud linteis cumaromatibus, sicut mos Iudaeis est sepelire.
At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in whichno one had yet been buried.41 Erat autem in loco, ubicrucifixus est, hortus, et in horto monumentum novum, in quo nondum quisquampositus erat.
Since it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.42 Ibi ergo propter Parascevem Iudaeorum, quia iuxta eratmonumentum, posuerunt Iesum.
