NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
'Suppose a man has taken a wife and consummated the marriage; but she has not pleased him andhe has found some impropriety of which to accuse her; he has therefore made out a writ of divorce for her andhanded it to her and then dismissed her from his house;1 Si acceperit homo uxorem et habuerit eam, et non invene rit gratiam ante oculos eius propter aliquam foeditatem, et scripserit libellum repudii dederitque in manu illius et dimiserit eam de domo sua,
she leaves his home and goes away to become the wife of another man.2 cumque egressa alterius uxor facta fuerit,
Then suppose this second man who has married her takes a dislike to her and makes out a writ ofdivorce for her and hands it to her and dismisses her from his house or if this other man who took her as his wifedies,3 et ille quoque oderit eam dederitque ei libellum repudii et dimiserit de domo sua, vel mortuus fuerit,
her first husband, who has repudiated her, may not take her back as his wife now that she has beenmade unclean in this way. For that is detestable in Yahweh's eyes and you must not bring guilt on the countrywhich Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.4 non poterit prior maritus recipere eam in uxorem, quia polluta est; hoc esset abominatio coram Domino. Ne peccare facias terram tuam, quam Dominus Deus tuus tradiderit tibi possidendam.
'If a man is newly married, he must not join the army, nor must he be pestered at home; he must beleft at home, free of al obligations for one year, to make his new wife happy.5 Cum acceperit homo nuper uxorem, non procedet ad bellum, nec ei quippiam necessitatis iniungetur publicae, sed vacabit liber domui suae, ut uno anno laetetur cum uxore sua.
'No one may take a mil or a mil stone in pledge; that would be to take life itself in pledge.6 Non accipies loco pignoris molam vel superiorem lapidem molarem, quia animam suam apposuit tibi.
'If anyone is caught, having kidnapped one of his brother-Israelites, whether he makes him his slaveor sel s him, that thief must die. You must banish this evil from among you.7 Si deprehensus fuerit homo rapiens unum de fratribus suis de filiis Israel et, vendito eo, accipiens pretium, interficietur; et auferes malum de medio tui.
'In a case of a virulent skin-disease, take care you faithful y observe and exactly carry out everythingthat the levitical priests direct you to do. You must keep and observe everything that I have commanded them.8 Observa diligenter, si incurras plagam leprae, quaecumque docuerint vos sacerdotes levitici generis; quod praecepi eis, implete sollicite.
Remember what Yahweh your God did to Miriam when you were on your way out of Egypt.9 Memento, quae fecerit Dominus Deus tuus Mariae in via, cum egrederemini de Aegypto.
'If you are making your brother a loan on pledge, you must not go into his house and seize thepledge, whatever it may be.10 Cum mutuam dabis proximo tuo rem aliquam, non ingredieris domum eius, ut pignus auferas,
You must stay outside, and the man to whom you are making the loan must bring the pledge out toyou.11 sed stabis foris, et ille tibi pignus proferet, quod habuerit.
And if the man is poor, you must not go to bed with his pledge in your possession;12 Sin autem pauper est, non pernoctabit apud te pignus,
you must return it to him at sunset so that he can sleep in his cloak and bless you; and it wil be anupright action on your part in God's view.13 sed statim reddes ei ad solis occasum, ut dormiens in vestimento suo benedicat tibi, et habeas iustitiam coram Domino Deo tuo.
'You must not exploit a poor and needy wage-earner, be he one of your brothers or a foreignerresident in your community.14 Non negabis mercedem indigentis et pauperis ex fratribus tuis sive advenis, qui tecum morantur in terra intra portas tuas,
You must pay him his wages each day, not al owing the sun to set before you do, since he, beingpoor, needs them badly; otherwise he may appeal to Yahweh against you, and you would incur guilt.15 sed eadem die reddes ei pretium laboris sui ante solis occasum, quia pauper est, et illud desiderat anima sua; ne clamet contra te ad Dominum, et reputetur tibi in peccatum.
'Parents may not be put to death for their children, nor children for parents, but each must be put todeath for his own crime.16 Non occidentur patres pro filiis, nec filii pro patribus, sed unusquisque pro peccato suo morietur.
'You must not infringe the rights of the foreigner or the orphan; you must not take a widow's clothesin pledge.17 Non pervertes iudicium advenae et pupilli nec auferes pignoris loco viduae vestimentum.
Remember that you were once a slave in Egypt and that Yahweh your God redeemed you from that. That is why I am giving you this order.18 Memento quod servieris in Aegypto, et eruerit te Dominus Deus tuus inde; idcirco praecipio tibi, ut facias hanc rem.
'If, when reaping the harvest in your field, you overlook a sheaf in that field, do not go back for it. Theforeigner, the orphan and the widow shal have it, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in al yourundertakings.19 Quando messueris segetem in agro tuo et oblitus manipulum reliqueris, non reverteris, ut tollas eum, sed advenam et pupillum et viduam auferre patieris, ut benedicat tibi Dominus Deus tuus in omni opere manuum tuarum.
'When you beat your olive tree, you must not go over the branches twice. The foreigner, the orphanand the widow shall have the rest.20 Si fruges collegeris olivarum, quidquid remanserit in arboribus, non reverteris, ut colligas, sed relinques advenae, pupillo ac viduae.
'When you harvest your vineyard, you must not pick it over a second time. The foreigner, the orphanand the widow shall have the rest.21 Si vindemiaveris vineam tuam, non colliges remanentes racemos, sed cedent in usus advenae, pupilli ac viduae.
'Remember that you were once a slave in Egypt. That is why I am giving you this order.'22 Memento quod et tu servieris in Aegypto; et idcirco praecipio tibi, ut facias hanc rem.
