Deuteronomy 24

NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 'Suppose a man has taken a wife and consummated the marriage; but she has not pleased him andhe has found some impropriety of which to accuse her; he has therefore made out a writ of divorce for her andhanded it to her and then dismissed her from his house;	1 כי יקח איש אשה ובעלה והיה אם לא תמצא חן בעיניו כי מצא בה ערות דבר וכתב לה ספר כריתת ונתן בידה ושלחה מביתו
2 she leaves his home and goes away to become the wife of another man.	2 ויצאה מביתו והלכה והיתה לאיש אחר
3 Then suppose this second man who has married her takes a dislike to her and makes out a writ ofdivorce for her and hands it to her and dismisses her from his house or if this other man who took her as his wifedies,	3 ושנאה האיש האחרון וכתב לה ספר כריתת ונתן בידה ושלחה מביתו או כי ימות האיש האחרון אשר לקחה לו לאשה
4 her first husband, who has repudiated her, may not take her back as his wife now that she has beenmade unclean in this way. For that is detestable in Yahweh's eyes and you must not bring guilt on the countrywhich Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.	4 לא יוכל בעלה הראשון אשר שלחה לשוב לקחתה להיות לו לאשה אחרי אשר הטמאה כי תועבה הוא לפני יהוה ולא תחטיא את הארץ אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך נחלה
5 'If a man is newly married, he must not join the army, nor must he be pestered at home; he must beleft at home, free of al obligations for one year, to make his new wife happy.	5 כי יקח איש אשה חדשה לא יצא בצבא ולא יעבר עליו לכל דבר נקי יהיה לביתו שנה אחת ושמח את אשתו אשר לקח
6 'No one may take a mil or a mil stone in pledge; that would be to take life itself in pledge.	6 לא יחבל רחים ורכב כי נפש הוא חבל
7 'If anyone is caught, having kidnapped one of his brother-Israelites, whether he makes him his slaveor sel s him, that thief must die. You must banish this evil from among you.	7 כי ימצא איש גנב נפש מאחיו מבני ישראל והתעמר בו ומכרו ומת הגנב ההוא ובערת הרע מקרבך
8 'In a case of a virulent skin-disease, take care you faithful y observe and exactly carry out everythingthat the levitical priests direct you to do. You must keep and observe everything that I have commanded them.	8 השמר בנגע הצרעת לשמר מאד ולעשות ככל אשר יורו אתכם הכהנים הלוים כאשר צויתם תשמרו לעשות
9 Remember what Yahweh your God did to Miriam when you were on your way out of Egypt.	9 זכור את אשר עשה יהוה אלהיך למרים בדרך בצאתכם ממצרים
10 'If you are making your brother a loan on pledge, you must not go into his house and seize thepledge, whatever it may be.	10 כי תשה ברעך משאת מאומה לא תבא אל ביתו לעבט עבטו
11 You must stay outside, and the man to whom you are making the loan must bring the pledge out toyou.	11 בחוץ תעמד והאיש אשר אתה נשה בו יוציא אליך את העבוט החוצה
12 And if the man is poor, you must not go to bed with his pledge in your possession;	12 ואם איש עני הוא לא תשכב בעבטו
13 you must return it to him at sunset so that he can sleep in his cloak and bless you; and it wil be anupright action on your part in God's view.	13 השב תשיב לו את העבוט כבא השמש ושכב בשלמתו וברכך ולך תהיה צדקה לפני יהוה אלהיך
14 'You must not exploit a poor and needy wage-earner, be he one of your brothers or a foreignerresident in your community.	14 לא תעשק שכיר עני ואביון מאחיך או מגרך אשר בארצך בשעריך
15 You must pay him his wages each day, not al owing the sun to set before you do, since he, beingpoor, needs them badly; otherwise he may appeal to Yahweh against you, and you would incur guilt.	15 ביומו תתן שכרו ולא תבוא עליו השמש כי עני הוא ואליו הוא נשא את נפשו ולא יקרא עליך אל יהוה והיה בך חטא
16 'Parents may not be put to death for their children, nor children for parents, but each must be put todeath for his own crime.	16 לא יומתו אבות על בנים ובנים לא יומתו על אבות איש בחטאו יומתו
17 'You must not infringe the rights of the foreigner or the orphan; you must not take a widow's clothesin pledge.	17 לא תטה משפט גר יתום ולא תחבל בגד אלמנה
18 Remember that you were once a slave in Egypt and that Yahweh your God redeemed you from that.That is why I am giving you this order.	18 וזכרת כי עבד היית במצרים ויפדך יהוה אלהיך משם על כן אנכי מצוך לעשות את הדבר הזה
19 'If, when reaping the harvest in your field, you overlook a sheaf in that field, do not go back for it. Theforeigner, the orphan and the widow shal have it, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in al yourundertakings.	19 כי תקצר קצירך בשדך ושכחת עמר בשדה לא תשוב לקחתו לגר ליתום ולאלמנה יהיה למען יברכך יהוה אלהיך בכל מעשה ידיך
20 'When you beat your olive tree, you must not go over the branches twice. The foreigner, the orphanand the widow shall have the rest.	20 כי תחבט זיתך לא תפאר אחריך לגר ליתום ולאלמנה יהיה
21 'When you harvest your vineyard, you must not pick it over a second time. The foreigner, the orphanand the widow shall have the rest.	21 כי תבצר כרמך לא תעולל אחריך לגר ליתום ולאלמנה יהיה
22 'Remember that you were once a slave in Egypt. That is why I am giving you this order.'	22 וזכרת כי עבד היית בארץ מצרים על כן אנכי מצוך לעשות את הדבר הזה
