NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
'If you see your brother's ox or one of his sheep straying, you must not disregard it: you must take itback to your brother.1 Non videbis bovem fratris tui, aut ovem errantem, et præteribis : sed reduces fratri tuo,
And if he is not close at hand or you do not know who he is, you must take it home with you and keepit by you until your brother comes to look for it; you wil then return it to him.2 etiamsi non est propinquus frater tuus, nec nosti eum : duces in domum tuam, et erunt apud te quamdiu quærat ea frater tuus, et recipiat.
'You must do the same with his donkey, the same with his cloak, the same with anything that yourbrother loses and that you find; you must not disregard it.3 Similiter facies de asino, et de vestimento, et de omni re fratris tui, quæ perierit : si inveneris eam, ne negligas quasi alienam.
'If you see your brother's donkey or ox fal over on the road, you must not disregard it, but must helpyour brother get it on its feet again.4 Si videris asinum fratris tui aut bovem cecidisse in via, non despicies, sed sublevabis cum eo.
'A woman must not dress like a man, nor a man like a woman; anyone who does this is detestable toYahweh your God.5 Non induetur mulier veste virili, nec vir utetur veste feminea : abominabilis enim apud Deum est qui facit hæc.
'If, when out walking, you come across a bird's nest, in a tree or on the ground, with chicks or eggsand the mother bird sitting on the chicks or the eggs, you must not take the mother as wel as the chicks.6 Si ambulans per viam, in arbore vel in terra nidum avis inveneris, et matrem pullis vel ovis desuper incubantem : non tenebis eam cum filiis,
Let the mother go; the young you may take for yourself. Thus wil you have prosperity and long life.7 sed abire patieris, captos tenens filios : ut bene sit tibi, et longo vivas tempore.
'When you build a new house, you must give your roof a parapet; then your house will not incur blood-vengeance, should anyone fal off the top.8 Cum ædificaveris domum novam, facies murum tecti per circuitum : ne effundatur sanguis in domo tua, et sis reus labente alio, et in præceps ruente.
'You must not sow any other crop in your vineyard, or the whole yield may become forfeit, both thecrop you have sown and the yield of your vines.9 Non seres vineam tuam altero semine : ne et sementis quam sevisti, et quæ nascuntur ex vinea, pariter sanctificentur.
'You must not plough with ox and donkey together.10 Non arabis in bove simul et asino.
'You must not wear clothing woven part of wool, part of linen.11 Non indueris vestimento, quod ex lana linoque contextum est.
'You must make tassels for the four corners of the cloak in which you wrap yourself.12 Funiculos in fimbriis facies per quatuor angulos pallii tui, quo operieris.
'If a man marries a woman, has sexual intercourse with her and then, turning against her,13 Si duxerit vir uxorem, et postea odio habuerit eam,
taxes her with misconduct and publicly defames her by saying, "I married this woman and when Ihad sexual intercourse with her I did not find evidence of her virginity,"14 quæsieritque occasiones quibus dimittat eam, objiciens ei nomen pessimum, et dixerit : Uxorem hanc accepi, et ingressus ad eam non inveni virginem :
the girl's father and mother must take the evidence of her virginity and produce it before the elders ofthe town, at the gate.15 tollent eam pater et mater ejus, et ferent secum signa virginitatis ejus ad seniores urbis qui in porta sunt :
To the elders, the girl's father wil say, "I gave this man my daughter for a wife and he has turnedagainst her,16 et dicet pater : Filiam meam dedi huic uxorem : quam quia odit,
and now he taxes her with misconduct, saying, I have found no evidence of virginity in your daughter. Here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!"17 imponit ei nomen pessimum, ut dicat : Non inveni filiam tuam virginem : et ecce hæc sunt signa virginitatis filiæ meæ. Expandent vestimentum coram senioribus civitatis :
They must then display the cloth to the elders of the town.18 apprehendentque senes urbis illius virum, et verberabunt illum,
The elders of the town in question wil have the man arrested and flogged, and fine him a hundredsilver shekels for publicly defaming a virgin of Israel, and give this money to the girl's father. She wil remain his wife; as long as he lives, he may not divorce her.19 condemnantes insuper centum siclis argenti, quos dabit patri puellæ, quoniam diffamavit nomen pessimum super virginem Israël : habebitque eam uxorem, et non poterit dimittere eam omnibus diebus vitæ suæ.
'But if the accusation that the girl cannot show evidence of virginity is substantiated,20 Quod si verum est quod objicit, et non est in puella inventa virginitas,
she must be taken out, and at the door of her father's house her fellow-citizens must stone her todeath for having committed an infamy in Israel by bringing disgrace on her father's family. You must banish thisevil from among you.21 ejicient eam extra fores domus patris sui, et lapidibus obruent viri civitatis illius, et morietur : quoniam fecit nefas in Israël, ut fornicaretur in domo patris sui : et auferes malum de medio tui.
'If a man is caught having sexual intercourse with another man's wife, both must be put to death: theman who has slept with her and the woman herself. You must banish this evil from Israel.22 Si dormierit vir cum uxore alterius, uterque morietur, id est, adulter et adultera : et auferes malum de Israël.
'If a virgin is engaged to a man, and another man encounters her in the town and has sexualintercourse with her,23 Si puellam virginem desponderit vir, et invenerit eam aliquis in civitate, et concubuerit cum ea,
you will take them both to the gate of the town in question and stone them to death: the girl, for nothaving cal ed for help in the town; the man, for having exploited his fel ow-citizen's wife. You must banish thisevil from among you.24 educes utrumque ad portam civitatis illius, et lapidibus obruentur : puella, quia non clamavit, cum esset in civitate : vir, quia humiliavit uxorem proximi sui : et auferes malum de medio tui.
But if the man ran into the betrothed girl in the open country and slept with her, having taken her byforce, her ravisher alone must die;25 Sin autem in agro repererit vir puellam, quæ desponsata est, et apprehendens concubuerit cum ea, ipse morietur solus :
you must do nothing to the girl, she has not committed a capital offence. The case is like that of aman who attacks and kil s his fel ow:26 puella nihil patietur, nec est rea mortis : quoniam sicut latro consurgit contra fratrem suum, et occidit animam ejus, ita et puella perpessa est.
since he came across her in the open country, the betrothed girl may have cal ed out, withoutanyone's coming to her rescue.27 Sola erat in agro : clamavit, et nullus affuit qui liberaret eam.
'If a man meets a young virgin who is not betrothed and seizes her, sleeps with her and is caught inthe act,28 Si invenerit vir puellam virginem, quæ non habet sponsum, et apprehendens concubuerit cum illa, et res ad judicium venerit :
her ravisher must give the girl's father fifty silver shekels; since he has exploited her, she must be hiswife and, as long as he lives, he may not divorce her.'29 dabit qui dormivit cum ea, patri puellæ quinquaginta siclos argenti, et habebit eam uxorem, quia humiliavit illam : non poterit dimittere eam cunctis diebus vitæ suæ.
Non accipiet homo uxorem patris sui, nec revelabit operimentum ejus.
