NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
'You must love Yahweh your God and always keep his observances, his laws, his customs, hiscommandments.1 Therefore love the Lord thy God and observe his precepts and ceremonies, his judgments and commandments at all times.
You are the ones who have had the experience, not your children. They have not had the experience, they have not witnessed the lessons of Yahweh your God, his greatness, his mighty hand and his outstretchedarm,2 Know this day the things that your children know not, who saw not the chastisements of the Lord your God. his great doings and strong hand, and stretched out arm,
the signs and the deeds which he performed in the heart of Egypt, against Pharaoh king of Egypt andhis entire country,3 The signs and works which he did in the midst of Egypt to king Pharao, and to all his land,
what he did to the armies of Egypt, to their horses and their chariots, by overwhelming them with thewaters of the Sea of Reeds when they were pursuing you, and leaving no trace of them to this day;4 And to all the host of the Egyptians, and to their horses and chariots: how the waters of the Red Sea covered them, when they pursued you, and how the Lord destroyed them until this present day:
what he did for you in the desert, until you arrived here;5 And what he hath done to you in the wilderness, till you came to this place:
what he did to Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when, with al Israel standinground, the earth opened its mouth and swal owed them, with their families, their tents and al their supporters.6 And to Dathan and Abiron the sons of Eliab, who was the son of Ruben: whom the earth, opening her mouth swallowed up with their households and tents, and all their substance, which they had in the midst of Israel.
Al these great deeds of Yahweh you have seen with your own eyes.
'You must keep al the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that you may have the strengthto conquer the country into which you are about to cross, to take possession of it,8 Your eyes have seen all the greet works of the Lord, that he hath done,
and so that you may live long in the country which Yahweh promised on oath to bestow on yourancestors and their descendants, a country flowing with milk and honey.9 That you may keep all his commandments, which I command you this day, and may go in, and possess the land, to which you are entering,
'For the country which you are about to enter and make your own is not like the country of Egyptfrom which you have come, where, having done your sowing, you had to water the seed by foot, as though in avegetable garden.10 And may live in it a long time: which the Lord promised by oath to your fathers, and to their seed, a land which floweth with milk and honey.
No, the country which you are about to enter and make your own, is a country of hills and val eyswatered by the rain of heaven.11 For the land, which thou goest to possess, is not like the land of Egypt, from whence thou camest out, where, when the seed is sown, waters are brought in to water it after the manner of gardens.
Yahweh your God looks after this country, the eyes of Yahweh your God are always on it, from thebeginning of the year to the end.12 But it is a land of hills and plains, expecting rain from heaven.
Depend on it: if you faithfully obey the commandments I enjoin on you today, loving Yahweh yourGod and serving him with al your heart and al your soul,13 And the Lord thy God doth always visit it, and his eyes are on it from the beginning of the year unto the end thereof.
I shal give your country rain at the right time, rain in autumn, rain in spring, so that you can harvestyour wheat, your new wine and your oil.14 If then you obey my commandments, which I command you this day, that you love the Lord your God, and serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul:
I shal provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat to your heart's content.15 He will give to your land the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your corn, and your wine, and your oil,
Beware of letting your heart be seduced: if you go astray, serve other gods and bow down to them,16 And your hay out of the fields to feed your cattle, and that you may eat and be filled.
Yahweh's anger wil be kindled against you, he wil shut the heavens, there wil be no more rain, thesoil wil not yield its produce and, in the fine country given you by Yahweh, you wil quickly perish.17 Beware lest perhaps your heart be deceived, and you depart from the Lord, and serve strange gods, and adore them:
'Let these words of mine remain in your heart and in your soul; fasten them on your hand as a signand on your forehead as a headband.18 And the Lord being angry shut up heaven, that the rain come not down, nor the earth yield her fruit, and you perish quickly from the excellent land, which the Lord will give you.
Teach them to your children, and keep on tel ing them, when you are sitting at home, when you areout and about, when you are lying down and when you are standing up.19 Lay up these my words in your hearts and minds, and hang them for a sign on your hands, and place them between your eyes.
Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,20 Teach your children that they meditate on them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest on the way, end when thou liest down and risest up.
so that you and your children may live long in the country which Yahweh swore to your ancestorsthat he would give them for as long as there is a sky above the earth.21 Thou shalt write them upon the posts and the doors of thy house:
'For if you faithful y keep and observe al these commandments that I enjoin on you today, lovingYahweh your God, following all his ways and holding fast to him,22 That thy days may be multiplied, and the days of thy children in the land which the Lord swore to thy fathers, that he would give them as long as the heaven hangeth over the earth.
Yahweh wil dispossess al these nations before you, and you wil dispossess nations greater andmore powerful than yourselves.23 For if you keep the commandments which I command you, and do them, to love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways, cleaving unto him,
Wherever the sole of your foot treads wil be yours; your territory will run from the desert al the wayto the Lebanon; and from the River, from the River Euphrates, as far as the Western Sea, wil be your territory.24 The Lord will destroy all these nations before your face, and you shall possess them, which are greater and stronger than you.
No one wil be able to resist you; Yahweh your God will make you feared and dreaded throughout theterritory you tread, as he has promised you.25 Every place, that your foot shall tread upon, shall be yours. From the desert, and from Libanus, from the great river Euphrates unto the western sea shall be your borders.
'Today, look, I am offering you a blessing and a curse:26 None shall stand against you: the Lord your God shall lay the dread and fear of you upon all the land that you shall tread upon, as he hath spoken to you.
a blessing, if you obey the commandments of Yahweh your God which I enjoin on you today;27 Behold I set forth in your sight this day a blessing and a curse:
a curse, if you disobey the commandments of Yahweh your God and leave the way which today Ihave marked out for you, by following other gods hitherto unknown to you.28 A blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day:
And when Yahweh your God has brought you into the country which you are about to enter andmake your own, you must set the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.29 A curse, if you obey not the commandments of the Lord your. God, but revolt from the way which now I shew you, and walk after strange gods which you know not.
(These mountains, as everyone knows, are on the other side of the Jordan on the westward road, inthe territory of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the Oak of Moreh.)30 And when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land, whither thou goest to dwell, thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Garizim, the curse upon mount Hebal:
For you are about to cross the Jordan, to enter and take possession of the country given you byYahweh your God. You wil possess it, you wil live in it,31 Which are beyond the Jordan, behind the way that goeth to the setting of the sun, in the land of the Chanaanite who dwelleth in the plain country over against Galgala, which is near the valley that reacheth and entereth far.
and you must keep and observe al the laws and customs promulgated by me to you today.'32 For you shall pass over the Jordan, to possess the land, which the Lord your God will give you, that you may have it and possess it.
