NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.1 Hæc sunt verba quæ locutus est Moyses ad omnem Israël trans Jordanem in solitudine campestri, contra mare Rubrum, inter Pharan et Tophel et Laban et Haseroth, ubi auri est plurimum :
It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.2 undecim diebus de Horeb per viam montis Seir usque ad Cadesbarne.
It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.3 Quadragesimo anno, undecimo mense, prima die mensis, locutus est Moyses ad filios Israël omnia quæ præceperat illi Dominus, ut diceret eis,
He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.4 postquam percussit Sehon regem Amorrhæorum, qui habitabat in Hesebon, et Og regem Basan, qui mansit in Astaroth, et in Edrai,
There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:5 trans Jordanem in terra Moab. Cœpitque Moyses explanare legem, et dicere :
'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.6 Dominus Deus noster locutus est ad nos in Horeb, dicens : Sufficit vobis quod in hoc monte mansistis :
Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.7 revertimini, et venite ad montem Amorrhæorum, et ad cetera quæ ei proxima sunt campestria atque montana et humiliora loca contra meridiem, et juxta littus maris, terram Chananæorum, et Libani usque ad flumen magnum Euphraten.
Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."8 En, inquit, tradidi vobis : ingredimini et possidete eam, super qua juravit Dominus patribus vestris Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob, ut daret illam eis, et semini eorum post eos.
'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.9 Dixique vobis illo in tempore :
Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.10 Non possum solus sustinere vos : quia Dominus Deus vester multiplicavit vos, et estis hodie sicut stellæ cæli, plurimi.
And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.11 (Dominus Deus patrum vestrorum addat ad hunc numerum multa millia, et benedicat vobis sicut locutus est.)
So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?12 Non valeo solus negotia vestra sustinere, et pondus ac jurgia.
From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."13 Date ex vobis viros sapientes et gnaros, et quorum conversatio sit probata in tribubus vestris, ut ponam eos vobis principes.
You replied, "Your plan is good."14 Tunc respondistis mihi : Bona res est, quam vis facere.
So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.15 Tulique de tribubus vestris viros sapientes et nobiles, et constitui eos principes, tribunos, et centuriones, et quinquagenarios ac decanos, qui docerent vos singula.
At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.16 Præcepique eis, dicens : Audite illos, et quod justum est judicate : sive civis sit ille, sive peregrinus.
You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.17 Nulla erit distantia personarum : ita parvum audietis ut magnum, nec accipietis cujusquam personam, quia Dei judicium est. Quod si difficile vobis visum aliquid fuerit, referte ad me, et ego audiam.
And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."18 Præcepique omnia quæ facere deberetis.
'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.19 Profecti autem de Horeb, transivimus per eremum terribilem et maximam, quam vidistis, per viam montis Amorrhæi, sicut præceperat Dominus Deus noster nobis. Cumque venissemus in Cadesbarne,
I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.20 dixi vobis : Venistis ad montem Amorrhæi, quem Dominus Deus noster daturus est nobis :
Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."21 vide terram, quam Dominus Deus tuus dat tibi : ascende et posside eam, sicut locutus est Dominus Deus noster patribus tuis : noli timere, nec quidquam paveas.
Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."22 Et accessistis ad me omnes, atque dixistis : Mittamus viros qui considerent terram : et renuntient per quod iter debeamus ascendere, et ad quas pergere civitates.
This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.23 Cumque mihi sermo placuisset, misi ex vobis duodecim viros, singulos de tribubus suis.
These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.24 Qui cum perrexissent, et ascendissent in montana, venerunt usque ad Vallem botri : et considerata terra,
They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."25 sumentes de fructibus ejus, ut ostenderent ubertatem, attulerunt ad nos, atque dixerunt : Bona est terra, quam Dominus Deus noster daturus est nobis.
You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.26 Et noluistis ascendere, sed increduli ad sermonem Domini Dei nostri,
You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.27 murmurastis in tabernaculis vestris, atque dixistis : Odit nos Dominus, et idcirco eduxit nos de terra Ægypti, ut traderet nos in manu Amorrhæi, atque deleret.
What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."28 Quo ascendemus ? nuntii terruerunt cor nostrum, dicentes : Maxima multitudo est, et nobis statura procerior ; urbes magnæ, et ad cælum usque munitæ : filios Enacim vidimus ibi.
'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.29 Et dixi vobis : Nolite metuere, nec timeatis eos :
Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.30 Dominus Deus, qui ductor est vester, pro vobis ipse pugnabit, sicut fecit in Ægypto cunctis videntibus.
You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."31 Et in solitudine (ipse vidisti) portavit te Dominus Deus tuus, ut solet homo gestare parvulum filium suum, in omni via per quam ambulastis, donec veniretis ad locum istum.
But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,32 Et nec sic quidem credidistis Domino Deo vestro,
going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path, and in the cloud by day.33 qui præcessit vos in via, et metatus est locum in quo tentoria figere deberetis, nocte ostendens vobis iter per ignem, et die per columnam nubis.
'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,34 Cumque audisset Dominus vocem sermonum vestrorum, iratus juravit, et ait :
"Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,35 Non videbit quispiam de hominibus generationis hujus pessimæ terram bonam, quam sub juramento pollicitus sum patribus vestris,
except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."36 præter Caleb filium Jephone : ipse enim videbit eam, et ipsi dabo terram, quam calcavit, et filiis ejus, quia secutus est Dominum.
Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.37 Nec miranda indignatio in populum, cum mihi quoque iratus Dominus propter vos dixerit : Nec tu ingredieris illuc :
"Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.38 sed Josue filius Nun minister tuus, ipse intrabit pro te. Hunc exhortare et robora, et ipse sorte terram dividet Israëli.
And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.39 Parvuli vestri, de quibus dixistis quod captivi ducerentur, et filii qui hodie boni ac mali ignorant distantiam, ipsi ingredientur : et ipsis dabo terram, et possidebunt eam.
But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."40 Vos autem revertimini, et abite in solitudinem per viam maris Rubri.
'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.41 Et respondistis mihi : Peccavimus Domino : ascendemus et pugnabimus, sicut præcepit Dominus Deus noster. Cumque instructi armis pergeretis in montem,
But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."42 ait mihi Dominus : Dic ad eos : Nolite ascendere, neque pugnetis : non enim sum vobiscum : ne cadatis coram inimicis vestris.
So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.43 Locutus sum, et non audistis : sed adversantes imperio Domini, et tumentes superbia, ascendistis in montem.
The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.44 Itaque egressus Amorrhæus, qui habitabat in montibus, et obviam veniens, persecutus est vos, sicut solent apes persequi : et cecidit de Seir usque Horma.
On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.45 Cumque reversi ploraretis coram Domino, non audivit vos, nec voci vestræ voluit acquiescere.
That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'46 Sedistis ergo in Cadesbarne multo tempore.
