Deuteronomy 1

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.	1 Estas son las palabras que Moisés dirigió a todo Israel al otro lado del Jordán, en el desierto, en la Arabá. frente a Suf, entre Parán, Tofel y Labán, Jaserot y Dizahab.
2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.	2 –Desde el Horeb hasta Cades Barné, hay once días de camino por las montañas del Seír–.
3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.	3 En el cuadragésimo año, el primer día del undécimo mes, Moisés habló a los israelitas, como el Señor se lo habla ordenado.
4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.	4 Después de haber derrotado a Sijón, rey de los amorreos que residía en Jesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que residía en Astarot y Edrei.
5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:	5 Al otro lado del Jordán, en territorio de Moab, Moisés comenzó a exponer esta Ley, diciendo.
6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.	6 El Señor, nuestro Dios, nos habló en el Horeb en estos términos. Ya han estado bastante tiempo en esta montaña.
7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.	7 Den vuelta y pónganse en camino, para ir a la montaña de los amorreos y a todas las regiones vecinas: la Montaña, la Sefelá, el Négueb y la costa marítima –es decir la tierra del Canaán– y el Líbano, hasta el Gran Río, el río, el río Eufrates.
8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."	8 Yo pongo el país delante de ustedes: vayan a tomar posesión de la tierra que el Señor juró dar a sus padres. a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob, y a sus descendientes después de ellos.
9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.	9 En aquel tiempo, yo les dije: «Yo solo no puedo hacerme cargo de todos ustedes».
10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.	10 El Señor, su Dios, los ha multiplicado de tal manera, que hoy ustedes son numerosos como las estrellas del cielo.
11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.	11 ¡Qué el Señor, el Dios de sus padres, los haga aún mil veces más numerosos y los bendiga, como lo ha prometido!
12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?	12 ¿Cómo podré, entonces, cargar yo solo con el peso de todos ustedes y ocuparme también de sus litigios?
13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."	13 Designen para cada una de sus tribus a hombres sabios, prudentes y experimentados. y yo los pondré al frente de ustedes».
14 You replied, "Your plan is good."	14 Ustedes me respondieron: «Tu propuesta nos parece buena».
15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.	15 Entonces tomé de entre los jefes de las tribus a unos hombres sabios y experimentados y los puse al frente de ustedes como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez hombres, y como escribas para las tribus.
16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.	16 Al mismo tiempo, di esta orden a los jueces: «Escuchen a sus hermanos y hagan justicia, cuando tengan un pleito entre ellos o con un extranjero.
17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.	17 No sean parciales en los juicios: escuchen a los humildes lo mismo que a los poderosos. No se dejen intimidar por nadie, porque el juicio pertenece a Dios. Y cuando se les presente un caso demasiado difícil, diríjanse a mí, para que yo lo resuelva».
18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."	18 Así les indiqué aquella vez todo lo que ustedes debían hacer.
19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.	19 Después partimos del Horeb, y comenzamos a recorrer el desierto inmenso y temible que ustedes han visto. Ibamos hacia la montaña de los amorreos, como el Señor, nuestro Dios, nos lo había ordenado, y llegamos a Cades Barné.
20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.	20 Entonces yo les dije: «Ya han llegado a la montaña de los amorreos, que nos da el Señor. nuestro Dios.
21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."	21 El Señor, tu Dios, pone este país delante de ustedes: sube a tomar posesión de él, según te lo ha dicho el Señor, el Dios de tus padres. No temas ni te acobardes».
22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."	22 Pero ustedes se acercaron a mí para decirme: «Enviemos delante de nosotros algunos hombres para que exploren la región y nos informen sobre el camino que debemos tomar y sobre las ciudades a las que debemos entrar».
23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.	23 La idea me pareció buena, y yo designé a doce de ustedes, uno por cada tribu.
24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.	24 Ellos se dirigieron hacia la región montañosa y llegaron al valle de Escol. Después de haber inspeccionado la montaña.
25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."	25 Regresaron trayendo en sus manos frutos de esa región, y nos presentaron este informe: «La tierra que nos da el Señor, nuestro Dios, es excelente».
26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.	26 Pero ustedes se negaron a subir y se rebelaron contra la orden del Señor, su Dios.
27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.	27 Se pusieron a murmurar en sus carpas, diciendo: «El Señor nos aborrece; por eso nos hizo salir de Egipto para entregarnos a los amorreos y destruirnos.
28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."	28 ¿Adónde iremos? Nuestros hermanos nos dejaron sin aliento, cuando nos dijeron: «Son gente más grande y más alta que nosotros; las ciudades son enormes y están provistas de murallas que se elevan hasta el cielo. Allí vimos también a los anaquitas».
29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.	29 Entonces yo les dije: «No se acobarden ni les tengan miedo.
30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.	30 El Señor, su Dios, que va delante de ustedes, combatirá por ustedes, como lo hizo en Egipto ante sus propios ojos.
31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."	31 Y también en el desierto. donde tú viste que el Señor, tu Dios, te conducía como un padre conduce a su hijo, a lo largo de todo el camino que recorriste hasta llegar a este lugar».
32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,	32 Y a pesar de todo, ustedes no tuvieron confianza en el Señor, su Dios.
33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.	33 Que los precedía durante la marcha para buscarles un lugar donde acampar; de noche en el fuego, mostrándose el camino que debían seguir, y de día en la nube.
34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,	34 Al oír lo que ustedes decían, el Señor se irritó y pronunció este juramento:
35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,	35 «Ni uno solo de los hombres de esta generación perversa verá la hermosa tierra que yo juré dar a sus padres.
36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."	36 El único que podrá verla es Caleb, el hijo de Iefuné. A él y a sus hijos les daré la tierra que sus pies han pisado, porque él ha sido siempre fiel al Señor».
37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.	37 Y por culpa de ustedes, el Señor se indignó también contra mí, y me dijo: «Tampoco tú entrarás.
38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.	38 El que entrará es Josué, tu ayudante. Infúndele valor, por él deberá poner a Israel en posesión de la tierra.
39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.	39 Y también entrarán los niños –esos que según ustedes iban a ser presa del enemigo– los hijos de ustedes, que aún no saben distinguir lo bueno de lo malo; a ellos les daré la tierra y ellos la poseerán.
40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."	40 En cuanto a ustedes, den vuelta y avancen hacia el desierto, en dirección al Mar Rojo».
41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.	41 Ustedes me dijeron: «Hemos pecado contra el Señor. Pero ahora estamos dispuestos a subir y a combatir como el Señor, nuestro Dios, nos ha ordenado». Cada uno de ustedes de equipó con sus armas, creyendo que era fácil subir a la montaña.
42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."	42 Pero el Señor me dijo: «Ordénales que no suban a combatir, porque yo no estoy más en medio de ellos. Si lo hacen, serán derrotados por sus enemigos».
43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.	43 Yo les transmití la advertencia, pero ustedes no me escucharon y, rebelándose contra la palabra del Señor, tuvieron la osadía de escalar la montaña.
44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.	44 Entonces los amorreos que habitan en esa montaña les salieron al encuentro, los persiguieron como abejas, y los derrotaron en la región de Seír hasta llegar a Jormá.
45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.	45 Cuando ustedes regresaron, se pusieron a llorar delante del Señor, pero él no los escuchó ni les hizo caso.
46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'	46 Y así tuvieron que permanecer en Cades durante tanto tiempo.
