Deuteronomy 1

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.	1 Eis os discursos que pronunciou Moisés a todo o Israel do outro lado do Jordão, no deserto, na planície que se estende defronte de Suf, entre Farã, Tofel, Labã, Haserot e Di-Zaab.
2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.	2 Desde Horeb até Cades-Barne há uma distância de onze jornadas de marcha pelo caminho da montanha de Seir.
3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.	3 No quadragésimo ano, no primeiro dia do décimo primeiro mês, diante dos israelitas, Moisés pronunciou todos os discursos que o Senhor lhe tinha ordenado pronunciar,
4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.	4 depois de ter derrotado Seon, rei dos amorreus que habitava em Hesebon, e Og, rei de Basã, que habitava em Astarot e Edrai.
5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:	5 Do outro lado do Jordão, na terra de Moab, Moisés começou a expor a lei, dizendo:
6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.	6 O Senhor, nosso Deus, falou-nos nestes termos em Horeb: tendes-vos demorado muito tempo neste monte.
7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.	7 Voltai e parti. Tomai o caminho do monte dos amorreus e das regiões vizinhas; ide às planícies, às montanhas, aos vales, ao Negeb, às costas do mar, à terra dos cananeus, ao Líbano e até o grande rio Eufrates.
8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."	8 Eis que eu vos entrego esta terra. Ide e possuí a terra que jurei dar a vossos pais Abraão, Isaac e Jacó, a eles e à sua posteridade.
9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.	9 Eu disse-vos nessa mesma época: eu sozinho não posso tomar conta de vós.
10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.	10 O Senhor, vosso Deus, vos multiplicou de tal modo que sois hoje tão numerosos como as estrelas do céu.
11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.	11 Que o Senhor, o Deus de vossos pais, vos multiplique mil vezes mais e vos abençoe como prometeu.
12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?	12 Como poderia eu sozinho encarregar-me de vós e levar o fardo de vossas contendas?
13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."	13 Escolhei, de cada uma de vossas tribos, homens sábios, prudentes e experimentados, que eu ponha à vossa frente.
14 You replied, "Your plan is good."	14 Vós então me respondesses: é uma boa coisa o que nos propões.
15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.	15 Tome, pois, dentre vós, homens sábios e experimentados que pus à vossa frente como chefes de milhares de centenas, de cinqüentenas e de dezenas e como escribas em vossas tribos.
16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.	16 Nesse mesmo tempo dei esta ordem aos vossos juízes: dai audiência aos vossos irmãos e julgai com eqüidade as questões de cada um deles com o seu irmão ou com o estrangeiro que mora com ele.
17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.	17 Não fareis distinção de pessoas em vossos julgamentos. Ouvireis o pequeno como o grande, sem temor de ninguém, porque o juízo é de Deus. Se uma questão vos parecer muito complicada, trá-la-eis diante de mim para que eu a ouça.
18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."	18 É assim que, naquele tempo, vos ordenei tudo o que devíeis fazer.
19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.	19 Depois partimos de Horeb para atravessar esse vasto e terrível deserto que vistes, do monte dos amorreus, como nos havia ordenado o Senhor, nosso Deus. E chegamos a Cades-Barne.
20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.	20 Eu disse-vos então: Eis-vos chegados ao monte dos amorreus que o Senhor, nosso Deus, nos dá.
21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."	21 Vê: o Senhor, teu Deus, entrega-te a terra. Subi e possuí-a, como o prometeu o Deus de teus pais. Não tenhas medo; não te assustes.
22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."	22 Vós vos aproximasses de mim e dissesses: enviemos homens adiante de nós, que explorem a terra e nos ensinem por que caminho devemos subir, e para que cidades devemos ir.
23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.	23 Vosso parecer agradou-me, e escolhi dentre vós doze homens, um de cada tribo.
24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.	24 Eles partiram, subiram as montanhas e chegaram ao vale de Escol, explorando a terra.
25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."	25 Tomaram consigo frutos da terra e no-los trouxeram dizendo: a terra que nos dá o Senhor, nosso Deus, é boa.
26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.	26 Mas não quisesses subir a ela, e fostes rebeldes ao mandamento do Senhor, nosso Deus.
27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.	27 E murmurasses em vossas tendas, dizendo: o Senhor tem-nos ódio, e por isso nos tirou da terra do Egito para entregar-nos ao extermínio pelas mãos dos amorreus.
28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."	28 Para onde iremos? Nossos irmãos fizeram-nos perder a coragem quando nos disseram ter visto um povo maior e de estatura mais alta que a nossa, e cidades grandes e fortificadas, cujos muros se elevavam até o céu, e até mesmo filhos de Enacim.
29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.	29 Eu vos respondi: não vos assusteis; não tenhais medo deles.
30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.	30 o Senhor, vosso Deus, que marcha diante de vós, combaterá ele mesmo em vosso lugar, como sempre o fez sob os vossos olhos, no Egito
31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."	31 e no deserto. No deserto, tu mesmo viste como o Senhor, teu Deus, te levou por todo caminho por onde andaste, como um homem costuma levar seu filho, até que chegásseis a esse lugar.
32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,	32 E apesar disso não tivesses confiança no Senhor, vosso Deus,
33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.	33 o qual, procurando-vos um lugar onde acampar, marchava adiante de vós no caminho, de noite no fogo, para vos mostrar o caminho, e de dia na nuvem.
34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,	34 O Senhor, tendo ouvido o som de vossas palavras, encolerizou-se e fez este juramento:
35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,	35 nenhum dos homens desta geração perversa verá a boa terra que eu, com juramento, prometi dar a vossos pais,
36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."	36 exceto Caleb, filho de Jefoné. Este vê-la-á, e eu darei a ele e a seus filhos o solo que ele pisou, porque cumpriu a vontade do Senhor.
37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.	37 Até contra mim se irritou o Senhor por causa de vós: tu tampouco, disse-me ele, entrarás nessa terra!
38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.	38 É Josué, filho de Nun, que ali entrará. Anima-o, pois é ele que introduzirá Israel na possessão da terra.
39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.	39 Vossos filhinhos, dos quais dissesses que seriam a presa do deserto, e vossos filhos, que hoje ainda não sabem distinguir o bem do mal, estes entrarão; a eles darei a terra e a possuirão.
40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."	40 Quanto a vós, voltai para trás e parti para o deserto na direção do mar Vermelho.
41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.	41 Vós respondestes-me: pecamos contra o Senhor. Vamos combater, como o Senhor, nosso Deus, nos ordenou. E quando cada um de vós, tomando as suas armas, vos dispusesses inconsideradamente a marchar sobre o monte,
42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."	42 o Senhor disse-me: dize-lhes: não subais, não entreis em combate algum, porque não estou no meio de vós. Se o fizerdes, sereis vencidos por vossos inimigos.
43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.	43 Em vão vos referi todas essas palavras: não me ouvisses e tivesses a presunção de subir o monte, a despeito das ordens do Senhor.
44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.	44 Então os amorreus que habitavam nessa montanha saíram contra vós, perseguiram-vos como abelhas e retalharam-vos desde Seir até Horma.
45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.	45 Voltando, chorasses diante do Senhor, mas o Senhor não ouviu os vossos clamores, nem vos inclinou os seus ouvidos.
46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'	46 Por isso é que ficastes tanto tempo em Cades, como o sabeis.
