Deuteronomy 1

NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.	1 QUESTE son le parole, le quali Mosè pronunziò a tutto Israele, di qua dal Giordano, nel deserto, nella campagna, dirincontro a Suf, fra Paran, e Tofel, e Laban, e Haserot, e Dizahab.
2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.	2 Vi sono undici giornate da Horeb, per la via del monte di Seir, fino a Cades-barnea.
3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.	3 Or l’anno quarantesimo, alle calendi dell’undecimo mese, Mosè parlò a’ figliuoli d’Israele, secondo tutto ciò che il Signore gli aveva comandato di dir loro,
4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.	4 dopo ch’ebbe sconfitto Sihon, re degli Amorrei, il quale abitava in Hesbon, e. Og, re di Basan, che abitava in Astarot, e in Edrei.
5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:	5 Di qua dal Giordano, nel paese di Moab, Mosè imprese a dichiarar questa Legge dicendo:
6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.	6 Il Signore Iddio nostro parlò a noi in Horeb, dicendo: Voi siete assai dimorati in questo monte.
7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.	7 Mettetevi in cammino, partitevi di qui, ed entrate ne’ monti degli Amorrei, e in tutte le lor vicinanze, nella campagna, nel monte, nella pianura, nella parte meridionale, e nella costa del mare, nel paese de’ Cananei, e nel Libano, fino al gran Fiume, ch’è il fiume Eufrate.
8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."	8 Ecco, io ho posto il paese in vostro potere: entrate, e possedete il paese, il quale il Signore giurò a’ vostri padri, ad Abrahamo, a Isacco, e a Giacobbe, ch’egli lo darebbe loro, e alla lor progenie dopo loro
9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.	9 E in quel tempo io vi parlai, dicendo: Io non posso reggervi solo.
10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.	10 Il Signore Iddio vostro vi ha moltiplicati, ed ecco, oggi voi siete come le stelle del cielo, in moltitudine.
11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.	11 Il Signore Iddio de’ vostri padri vi accresca pure mille volte più, e benedicavi, siccome egli vi ha parlato.
12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?	12 Come potrei io portar solo la fatica, e il carico di voi, e le vostre liti?
13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."	13 Datemi d’infra le vostre tribù degli uomini savi, e intendenti, e ben riconosciuti, e io ve li costituirò per Capi.
14 You replied, "Your plan is good."	14 E voi mi rispondeste, e diceste: Egli è bene di far ciò che tu dici.
15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.	15 Allora io presi de’ principali delle vostre tribù, uomini savi, e ben riconosciuti, e li costituii Capi sopra voi, Capi di migliaia, Capi di centinaia, Capi di cinquantine, Capi di decine, e Ufficiali per le vostre tribù.
16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.	16 E in quel tempo comandai, e dissi a’ vostri giudici: Date udienza a’ vostri fratelli negli affari che avranno insieme, e giudicate giustamente fra l’uno uomo e l’altro; fratello, o straniere ch’egli gli sia.
17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.	17 Non riguardate alla qualità della persona nel giudicio; ascoltate così il piccolo, come il grande; non temete di alcun uomo; conciossiachè il giudicio appartenga a Dio; e rapportate a me le cose che saranno troppo difficili per voi, ed io le udirò.
18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."	18 In quel tempo ancora vi comandai tutte le cose che dovete fare
19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.	19 Poi noi ci partimmo di Horeb, e camminammo per tutto quel grande e spaventevole deserto, il qual voi avete veduto, traendo al monte degli Amorrei, come il Signore Iddio nostro ci avea comandato: e arrivammo fino a Cades-barnea.
20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.	20 Allora io vi dissi: Voi siete arrivati al monte degli Amorrei, il quale il Signore Iddio nostro ci dona.
21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."	21 Vedi, il Signore Iddio tuo ha posto il paese in tuo potere; sali, possedilo, come il Signore Iddio de’ tuoi padri ti ha detto; non temere, e non ispaventarti.
22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."	22 E voi vi accostaste tutti a me, e diceste: Lascia che mandiamo davanti a noi degli uomini, che c’investighino il paese, e ci rapportino alcuna cosa del cammino per lo quale abbiamo da salire, e delle città alle quali abbiamo da venire.
23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.	23 E la cosa mi aggradì; e io presi dodici uomini di voi, uno per tribù;
24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.	24 ed essi si misero in cammino; e, saliti al monte, pervennero fino alla valle di Escol, e spiarono il paese.
25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."	25 E presero in mano del frutto di esso, e cel portarono, e fecero la lor relazione, e dissero: Il paese che il Signore Iddio nostro ci dona è buono.
26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.	26 Ma voi non voleste salire, e foste ribelli al comandamento del Signore Iddio vostro.
27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.	27 E mormoraste nelle vostre tende, e diceste: Perciocchè il Signore ci odia, egli ci ha fatti uscir fuor del paese di Egitto, per darci nelle mani degli Amorrei, per distruggerci.
28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."	28 Dove montiamo noi? i nostri fratelli ci hanno fatto struggere il cuore, dicendo: Quella gente è più grande, e di più alta statura di noi; le città vi sono grandi e forti, e arrivano fino al cielo; e anche vi abbiamo veduti i figliuoli degli Anachiti.
29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.	29 E io vi dissi: Non vi sgomentate, e non abbiate paura di loro.
30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.	30 Il Signore Iddio vostro, che cammina davanti a voi, esso combatterà per voi, secondo tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto inverso voi, davanti agli occhi vostri in Egitto;
31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."	31 e nel deserto, dove tu hai veduto come il Signore Iddio vostro ti ha portato, come un uomo porterebbe il suo figliuolo, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finchè siate arrivati in questo luogo.
32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,	32 Ma per tutto ciò voi non credeste al Signore Iddio vostro,
33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.	33 il quale andava davanti a voi per lo cammino, per investigarvi luogo da accamparvi, in fuoco di notte per illuminarvi nel cammino, per lo quale avevate da camminare, e di giorno nella nuvola.
34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,	34 E il Signore udì la voce delle vostre parole, e si adirò gravemente, e giurò, dicendo:
35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,	35 Se alcuno di questi uomini, questa malvagia generazione, vedrà quel buon paese che ho giurato di dare a’ vostri padri,
36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."	36 salvo Caleb, figliuolo di Gefunne; egli lo vedrà, e a lui, e a’ suoi figliuoli, darò il paese, nel quale è camminato; perciocchè egli ha compiutamente seguitato il Signore.
37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.	37 Eziandio contr’a me si adirò il Signore per cagion vostra, dicendo: Nè anche tu vi entrerai.
38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.	38 Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, che ti serve, esso vi entrerà; confortalo; perciocchè esso metterà Israele in possessione di quel paese.
39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.	39 E i vostri piccoli figliuoli, de’ quali avete detto che sarebbero in preda, e i vostri figliuoli, i quali oggi non conoscono nè il bene nè il male, essi vi
40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."	40 Ma voi, tornate indietro e avviatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del mar Rosso"
41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.	41 Allora voi rispondeste, dicendomi: "bbiam peccato contro l’Eterno; noi saliremo e combatteremo, interamente come l’Eterno, l’Iddio nostro, ci ha ordinato" E ognun di voi cinse le armi, e vi metteste temerariamente a salire verso i monti.
42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."	42 E l’Eterno mi disse: "i’ loro: Non salite, e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi; voi sareste sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici"
43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.	43 Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi deste ascolto; anzi foste ribelli all’ordine dell’Eterno, foste presuntuosi, e vi metteste a salire verso i monti.
44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.	44 Allora gli Amorei, che abitano quella contrada montuosa, uscirono contro a voi, v’inseguirono come fanno le api, e vi batterono in Seir fino a Horma.
45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.	45 E voi tornaste e piangeste davanti all’Eterno; ma l’Eterno non dette ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse orecchio.
46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'	46 Così rimaneste in Kades molti giorni; e ben sapete quanti giorni vi siete rimasti
