Deuteronomy 1

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.	1 Queste sono le parole che Mosè rivolse a tutto Israele oltre il Giordano, nel deserto, nell’Araba, di fronte a Suf, tra Paran, Tofel, Laban, Caseròt e Di-Zaab.
2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.	2 Vi sono undici giornate di cammino dall’Oreb, per la via del monte Seir, fino a Kades-Barnea.
3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.	3 Nel quarantesimo anno, l’undicesimo mese, il primo giorno del mese, Mosè riferì agli Israeliti quanto il Signore gli aveva ordinato per loro,
4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.	4 dopo avere sconfitto Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava a Chesbon, e Og, re di Basan, che abitava ad Astaròt, a Edrei.
5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:	5 Oltre il Giordano, nella terra di Moab, Mosè cominciò a spiegare questa legge:
6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.	6 «Il Signore, nostro Dio, ci ha parlato sull’Oreb e ci ha detto: “Avete dimorato abbastanza su questa montagna;
7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.	7 voltatevi, levate l’accampamento e dirigetevi verso le montagne degli Amorrei e verso tutte le regioni vicine: l’Araba, le montagne, la Sefela, il Negheb, la costa del mare – che è la terra dei Cananei e del Libano – fino al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate.
8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."	8 Ecco, io ho posto davanti a voi la terra. Entrate e prendete possesso della terra che il Signore aveva giurato ai vostri padri, ad Abramo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe, di dar loro e alla loro stirpe dopo di loro”.
9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.	9 In quel tempo io vi ho parlato e vi ho detto: “Io non posso da solo sostenere il peso di tutti voi.
10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.	10 Il Signore, vostro Dio, vi ha moltiplicati ed eccovi numerosi come le stelle del cielo.
11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.	11 Il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, vi aumenterà mille volte di più e vi benedirà come vi ha promesso.
12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?	12 Ma come posso io da solo portare il vostro peso, il vostro carico e le vostre liti?
13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."	13 Sceglietevi nelle vostre tribù uomini saggi, intelligenti e stimati, e io li costituirò vostri capi”.
14 You replied, "Your plan is good."	14 Voi mi rispondeste: “Va bene ciò che dici di fare”.
15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.	15 Allora presi i capi delle vostre tribù, uomini saggi e stimati, e li stabilii sopra di voi come capi: capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine, capi di decine, e come scribi per le vostre tribù.
16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.	16 In quel tempo diedi quest’ordine ai vostri giudici: “Ascoltate le cause dei vostri fratelli e decidete con giustizia fra un uomo e suo fratello o lo straniero che sta presso di lui.
17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.	17 Nei vostri giudizi non avrete riguardi personali, darete ascolto al piccolo come al grande; non temerete alcun uomo, poiché il giudizio appartiene a Dio; le cause troppo difficili per voi le presenterete a me e io le ascolterò”.
18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."	18 In quel tempo io vi ordinai tutte le cose che dovevate fare.
19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.	19 Poi partimmo dall’Oreb e attraversammo tutto quel deserto grande e spaventoso che avete visto, dirigendoci verso le montagne degli Amorrei, come il Signore, nostro Dio, ci aveva ordinato, e giungemmo a Kades-Barnea.
20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.	20 Allora vi dissi: “Siete arrivati presso la montagna degli Amorrei, che il Signore, nostro Dio, sta per darci.
21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."	21 Ecco, il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha posto la terra dinanzi: entra, prendine possesso, come il Signore, Dio dei tuoi padri, ti ha detto; non temere e non ti scoraggiare!”.
22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."	22 Voi tutti vi accostaste a me e diceste: “Mandiamo innanzi a noi uomini che esplorino la terra e ci riferiscano sul cammino per il quale dovremo procedere e sulle città nelle quali dovremo entrare”.
23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.	23 La proposta mi piacque e scelsi dodici uomini tra voi, uno per tribù.
24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.	24 Quelli si incamminarono, salirono verso i monti, giunsero alla valle di Escol ed esplorarono il paese.
25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."	25 Presero con le loro mani dei frutti della terra, ce li portarono e ci fecero questa relazione dicendo: “Buona è la terra che il Signore, nostro Dio, sta per darci”.
26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.	26 Ma voi non voleste entrarvi e vi ribellaste all’ordine del Signore, vostro Dio;
27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.	27 mormoraste nelle vostre tende e diceste: “Il Signore ci odia, per questo ci ha fatto uscire dalla terra d’Egitto per darci in mano agli Amorrei e sterminarci.
28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."	28 Dove possiamo andare noi? I nostri fratelli ci hanno scoraggiati dicendo: Quella gente è più grande e più alta di noi, le città sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; abbiamo visto là perfino dei figli degli Anakiti”.
29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.	29 Allora vi dissi: “Non spaventatevi e non abbiate paura di loro.
30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.	30 Il Signore, vostro Dio, che vi precede, egli stesso combatterà per voi, come insieme a voi ha fatto, sotto i vostri occhi, in Egitto
31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."	31 e nel deserto, dove hai visto come il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha portato, come un uomo porta il proprio figlio, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finché siete arrivati qui”.
32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,	32 Nonostante questo, non aveste fiducia nel Signore, vostro Dio,
33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.	33 che andava innanzi a voi nel cammino per cercarvi un luogo dove porre l’accampamento: di notte nel fuoco, per mostrarvi la via dove andare, e di giorno nella nube.
34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,	34 Il Signore udì il suono delle vostre parole, si adirò e giurò:
35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,	35 “Nessuno degli uomini di questa generazione malvagia vedrà la buona terra che ho giurato di dare ai vostri padri,
36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."	36 se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunnè. Egli la vedrà e a lui e ai suoi figli darò la terra su cui ha camminato, perché ha pienamente seguito il Signore”.
37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.	37 Anche contro di me si adirò il Signore, per causa vostra, e disse: “Neanche tu vi entrerai,
38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.	38 ma vi entrerà Giosuè, figlio di Nun, che sta al tuo servizio; incoraggialo, perché egli la metterà in possesso d'Israele.
39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.	39 Anche i vostri bambini, dei quali avevate detto che sarebbero divenuti oggetto di preda, e i vostri figli, che oggi non conoscono né il bene né il male, essi vi entreranno; a loro la darò ed essi la possederanno.
40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."	40 Ma voi tornate indietro e incamminatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del Mar Rosso”.
41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.	41 Allora voi mi rispondeste: “Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore! Saliremo e combatteremo come il Signore, nostro Dio, ci ha ordinato”. Ognuno di voi cinse le armi e presumeste di salire verso la montagna.
42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."	42 Il Signore mi disse: “Ordina loro: Non salite e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi, e sarete sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici”.
43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.	43 Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi ascoltaste; anzi vi ribellaste all’ordine del Signore, foste presuntuosi e saliste verso i monti.
44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.	44 Allora gli Amorrei, che abitano quella montagna, uscirono contro di voi, vi inseguirono come fanno le api e vi batterono in Seir fino a Corma.
45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.	45 Voi tornaste e piangeste davanti al Signore; ma il Signore non diede ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse l’orecchio.
46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'	46 Così rimaneste a Kades molti giorni, per tutto il tempo in cui vi siete rimasti.
