NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.	1 Queste sono le parole dette da Mosè a tutto Israele di là dal Giordano nella pianura del deserto dirimpetto al mar Rosso, tra Pharan e Tophel e Laban e Haseroth, dove si trova moltissimo oro.
2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.	2 In distanza di undici giornate da Horeb prendendo la strada del monte Seir fino a Cadesbarne,
3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.	3 Il quarantesimo anno, l’undecimo mese, il primo mese annunziò Mosè ai figliuoli d'Israele tutto quello che il Signore gli avea comandato di dire ad essi;
4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.	4 Dopo la sconfitta di Sehon re degli Amorrhei, il quale abitava in Hesebon, e di Og re di Basan, il quale abitò in Astaroth, e in Edrai,
5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:	5 Di là dal Giordano nella terra di Moab. E prese Mosè a spiegar la legge, e disse:
6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.	6 Il Signore Dio nostro ha parlato a noi sull'Horeb, dicendo: Assai tempo avete voi fatto dimora presso a questa montagna:
7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.	7 Movetevi, e venite al monte degli Amorrhei, e agli altri luoghi vicini alle pianure, e alle colline, e alle valli verso mezzodì, e lungo il lido del mare, alla terra de' Cananei, e del Libano sino al gran fiume Eufrate.
8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."	8 Ecco (diss'egli), ch'io l'ho data a voi: entratevi, e occupatela: ella è quella che il Signore promise con giuramento a' padri vostri Abramo, Isacco, e Giacobbe di dare a loro, e a’ loro discendenti dopo di essi.
9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.	9 E io in quel tempo vi dissi:
10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.	10 Non posso io solo reggervi: perché il Signore Dio vostro vi ha moltiplicati, e siete in oggi in numero grande, come le stelle del cielo.
11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.	11 (Il Signore Dio dei padri vostri aggiunga a questo numero molte migliaia, e vi benedica, come ho già detto).
12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?	12 Non posso io solo reggere a' vostri affari, e alla fatica, e alle dispute.
13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."	13 Scegliete tra voi degli uomini saggi, e di esperienza, e la vita de' quali sia lodata nelle vostre tribù, affinché io ve li dia per vostri capi.
14 You replied, "Your plan is good."	14 Allora voi mi rispondeste: Buona cosa è quella che tu vuoi fare.
15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.	15 E io presi uomini saggi e nobili delle vostre tribù, e li dichiarai principi, e tribuni, e capi di cento, e di cinquanta, e di dieci uomini, affinché v'istruissero di tutte le cose.
16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.	16 E gli avvertii, e dissi loro: Ascoltateli, e giudicate secondo il giusto, o si tratti d'un cittadino, o d'un forestiere:
17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.	17 Non si farà differenza di persone; ascoltate il piccolo come il grande: e non sarete accettatori di persone; perocché in luogo di Dio giudicate voi. Che se alcuna cosa vi parrà difficile, datene parte a me, e io la sentirò.
18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."	18 E ordinai tutto quello che far dovevate.
19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.	19 Partiti poi da Horeb passammo per un deserto terribile e grandissimo, qual voi lo vedeste, andando verso il monte degli Amorrhei, come il Signore Dio nostro ci avea comandato. E giunti a Cadesbarne,
20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.	20 Io vi dissi: Voi siete giunti al monte degli Amorrhei, di cui il Signore Dio nostro ci farà padroni.
21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."	21 Mira la terra, che dà a te il Signore Dio tuo: entravi, e prendine il possesso, come disse il Signore Dio nostro a' padri tuoi: non temere, e non paventare di nulla.
22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."	22 E veniste da me tutti, e diceste: Mandiamo gente a visitare la terra, affinché ci riferiscano, per quale strada dobbiamo entrarvi, e verso quali città dobbiamo incamminarci.
23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.	23 E io avendo acconsentito, mandai dodici de' vostri, uno per ogni tribù.
24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.	24 I quali essendo andati, e avendo valicati i monti, arrivarono fino alla valle del Grappolo, e disaminata la terra,
25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."	25 Presero de' suoi frutti, e per mostrarne la fecondità, li portarono a noi, e dissero: Buona terra è quella che il Signore Dio nostro vuol dare a noi.
26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.	26 Ma voi non voleste andarvi, ma increduli alle parole del Signore Dio nostro,
27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.	27 Mormoravate nelle vostre tende, e dicevate: II Signore ci vuol male, e per questo ci ha tratti dalla terra d'Egitto per darci nelle mani degli Amorrhei, e sterminarci.
28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."	28 Dove andremo noi? gli esploratori ci hanno sbigottiti dicendo: La moltitudine è grande, e di statura più alta della nostra: città grandi e fortificate sino al cielo: noi vi abbiam veduto de' figliuoli di Enacim.
29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.	29 E io vi dissi: Non temete, e non abbiate paura di loro:
30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.	30 Il Signore Dio, che è vostro condottiere, combatterà egli stesso per voi, come fece in Egitto a vista di tutti.
31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."	31 E nella solitudine (tu l’hai veduto) il Signore Dio tuo ti ha portato per tutto il tuo viaggio fino all’arrivo in questo luogo, come suole un uomo portare il piccolo suo fanciullo.
32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,	32 E nemmeno con tutto questo voi credeste al Signore Dio vostro,
33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.	33 Il quale è venuto innanzi a voi nel cammino, e ha misurati i luoghi, ove dovevate piantar le tende, mostrandovi di notte la strada col fuoco, e di giorno colla colonna della nuvola.
34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,	34 E avendo il Signore udito il rumor di vostre parole, sdegnato giurò, e disse:
35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,	35 Nissuno degli uomini di questa generazione pessima vedrà quella terra buona, la quale io con giuramento promisi a' padri vostri,
36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."	36 Eccetto Caleb figliuolo di Jephone: perocché egli la vedrà, e a lui, e a' suoi figliuoli darò la terra, che egli ha calcato, perché egli ha seguito il Signore.
37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.	37 Né dee far meraviglia lo sdegno di lui contro il popolo, mentre con me ancora sdegnato per cagion vostra il Signore disse: Neppur tu vi entrerai:
38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.	38 Ma Giosuè figliuolo di Nun, tuo ministro, vi entrerà egli in tuo luogo: ammoniscilo, e fagli coraggio, ed egli dividerà a sorte la terra ad Israele.
39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.	39 I vostri fanciulli, dei quali avete detto, che sarebbero menati schiavi, e i vostri figliuoli, che oggi ignorano la differenza dal bene al male, eglino vi entreranno: e ad essi darò la terra, ed ei la possederanno.
40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."	40 Ma voi tornale indietro, e andatevene nel deserto per la strada, che mena al mar Rosso.
41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.	41 E voi mi rispondeste: Abbiam peccato contro il Signore: noi anderemo, e combatteremo, come ordinò il Signore Dio nostro. E mentre voi armati di tutto punto v'incamminavate verso il monte,
42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."	42 Il Signore mi disse: Fa' lor sapere, che non vadano e non combattano, perocché io non sono con essi, affinché non restino abbattuti appiè de' loro nemici.
43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.	43 Io parlai, e voi non mi ascoltaste: ma andando contro al comando del Signore, e gonfi di superbia saliste al monte.
44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.	44 Allora l’Amorrheo, che abitava nella montagna, vi venne incontro, e vi assaltò, come sogliono assaltare le api: e fece strage di voi da Seir fino ad Horma.
45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.	45 E al vostro ritorno piangendo voi dinanzi al Signore, egli non vi ascoltò, né volle esaudire le voci vostre.
46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'	46 Steste dunque a sedere per lungo tempo a Cadesbarne.
