Deuteronomy 1

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.	1 Estas son las palabras que dijo Moisés a todo Israel al otro lado del Jordán en el desierto, en la Arabá, frente a Suf, entre Parán y Tófel, Labán, Jaserot y Di Zahab. -
2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.	2 Once son las jornadas desde el Horeb, por el camino del monte Seír, hasta Cadés Barnea -.
3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.	3 El año cuarenta, el día uno del undécimo mes, habló Moisés a los israelitas exponiendo todo cuanto Yahveh la había mandado respecto a ellos.
4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.	4 Después de batir a Sijón, rey de los amorreos, que moraba en Jesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que moraba en Astarot y en Edreí,
5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:	5 al otro lado del Jordán, en el país de Moab, decidió Moisés promulgar esta Ley. Dijo:
6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.	6 Yahveh, nuestro Dios, nos habló así en el Horeb: «Ya habéis estado bastante tiempo en esta montaña.
7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.	7 ¡En marcha!, partid y entrad en la montaña de los amorreos, y donde todos sus vecinos de la Arabá, la Montaña, la Tierra Baja, el Négueb y la costa del mar; en la tierra de Canaán y el Líbano, hasta el río grande, el río Eufrates.
8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."	8 Mirad: Yo he puesto esa tierra ante vosotros; id a tomar posesión de la tierra que Yahveh juró dar a vuestros padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, y a su descendencia después de ellos».
9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.	9 Yo os hablé entonces y os dije: «No puedo cargar con todos vosotros yo solo.
10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.	10 Yahveh, vuestro Dios, os ha multiplicado y sois ahora tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo.
11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.	11 Yahveh, el Dios de vuestros padres, os aumente mil veces más todavía y os bendiga como os ha prometido.
12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?	12 Pero ¿cómo voy a poder yo solo llevar vuestro peso, vuestra carga y vuestros litigios?
13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."	13 Escoged entre vosotros hombres sabios, perspicaces y experimentados, de cada una de vuestras tribus, y yo los pondré a vuestra cabeza».
14 You replied, "Your plan is good."	14 Me respondisteis: «Está bien lo que propones hacer».
15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.	15 Yo tomé, entre los jefes de vuestras tribus, hombres sabios y experimentados, y los hice jefes vuestros: jefes de millar, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez, así como escribas para vuestras tribus.
16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.	16 Y di entonces esta orden a vuestros jueces: «Escucharéis lo que haya entre vuestros hermanos y administraréis justicia entre un hombre y su hermano o un forastero.
17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.	17 No haréis en juicio acepción de personas, escucharéis al pequeño lo mismo que al grande, no tendréis miedo al hombre, pues la sentencia es de Dios. El asunto que os resulte demasiado difícil, me lo remitiréis a mí, y yo lo oiré».
18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."	18 Yo os prescribí entonces todo lo que tenías que hacer.
19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.	19 Partimos del Horeb y fuimos por ese enorme y temible desierto que habéis visto, camino de la montaña de los amorreos, como Yahveh nuestro Dios nos había mandado, y llegamos a Cadés Barnea.
20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.	20 Yo os dije: «Ya habéis llegado a la montaña de los amorreos que Yahveh nuestro Dios nos da.
21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."	21 Mira: Yahveh tu Dios ha puesto ante ti este país. Sube a tomar posesión de él como te ha dicho Yahveh el Dios de tus padres; no tengas miedo ni te asustes».
22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."	22 Pero todos vosotros os acercasteis a decirme: «Enviemos delante de nosotros hombres para que exploren el país y nos den noticias sobre el camino por donde hemos de subir y sobre las ciudades en que podemos entrar».
23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.	23 Me pareció bien la propuesta y tomé de entre vosotros doce hombres, uno por tribu.
24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.	24 Partieron y subieron a la montaña; llegaron hasta el valle de Eskol y lo exploraron.
25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."	25 Tomaron en su mano frutos del país, nos los trajeron, y nos informaron: «Buena tierra es la que Yahveh nuestro Dios nos da».
26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.	26 Pero vosotros os nesgasteis a subir; os rebelasteis contra la orden de Yahveh vuestro Dios,
27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.	27 y os pusisteis a murmurar en vuestras tiendas: «Por el odio que nos tiene nos ha sacado Yahveh de Egipto, para entregarnos en manos de los amorreos y destruirnos.
28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."	28 ¿Adónde vamos a subir? Nuestros hermanos nos han descorazonado al decir: Es un pueblo más grande y corpulento que nosotros, las ciudades son grandes y sus murallas llegan hasta el cielo. Y hasta anaquitas hemos visto allí».
29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.	29 Yo os dije: «No os asustéis, no tengáis miedo de ellos.
30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.	30 Yahveh vuestro Dios, que marcha a vuestro frente, combatirá por vosotros, como visteis que lo hizo en Egipto,
31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."	31 y en el desierto, donde has visto que Yahveh tu Dios te llevaba como un hombre lleva a su hijo, a todo lo largo del camino que habéis recorrido hasta llegar a este lugar».
32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,	32 Pero ni aun así confiasteis en Yahveh vuestro Dios,
33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.	33 que era el que os precedía en el camino y os buscaba lugar donde acampar, con el fuego durante la noche para alumbrar el camino que debíais seguir, y con la nube durante el día.
34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,	34 Yahveh oyó encolerizado vuestras palabras y juró así:
35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,	35 «Ni un solo hombre de esta generación perversa verá la tierra buena que yo juré dar a vuestros padres,
36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."	36 excepto Caleb, hijo de Yefunné: él la verá, y yo le daré a él y a sus hijos la tierra que ha pisado, porque siguió cabalmente a Yahveh».
37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.	37 Por culpa vuestra Yahveh se irritó también contra mí y me dijo: «Tampoco tú entrarás allí.
38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.	38 Será tu ayudante Josué, hijo de Nun, el que entrará. Fortalécele, ya que él dará a Israel posesión de la tierra.
39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.	39 Pero vuestros pequeños, de los que dijisteis que iban a servir de botín, vuestros hijos que no conocen todavía el bien y el mal, sí entrarán allá, a ellos se la daré yo, y ellos la poseerán.
40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."	40 Y vosotros ahora, volveos y partid hacia el desierto por el camino del mar de Suf».
41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.	41 Vosotros me respondisteis: «Hemos pecado contra Yahveh nuestro Dios. Subiremos y combatiremos como Yahveh nuestro Dios nos ha mandado». Ceñísteis cada uno vuestras armas y creísteis fácil subir a la montaña.
42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."	42 Pero Yahveh me dijo: «Diles: No subáis a combatir porque no estoy yo en medio de vosotros, y así seréis derrotados por vuestros enemigos».
43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.	43 Yo os hablé, pero vosotros no me escuchasteis; fuisteis rebeldes a la orden de Yahveh y tuvisteis la osadía de subir a la montaña.
44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.	44 Los amorreos, habitantes de aquella montaña, salieron a vuestro encuentro, os persiguieron como lo hubieran hecho las abejas, y os derrotaron en Seír hasta Jormá.
45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.	45 A vuestro regreso llorasteis ante Yahveh, pero Yahveh no escuchó vuestra voz ni os prestó oídos.
46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'	46 Por eso tuvisteis que permanecer en Cadés todo ese largo tiempo que habéis estado allí.
