NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Now it happened that he was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressinground him listening to the word of God,1 And it came to pass, that when the multitudes pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Genesareth,
when he caught sight of two boats at the water's edge. The fishermen had got out of them and werewashing their nets.2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
He got into one of the boats -- it was Simon's -- and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then hesat down and taught the crowds from the boat.3 And going into one of the ships that was Simon's, he desired him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting he taught the multitudes out of the ship.
When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for acatch.'4 Now when he had ceased to speak, he said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
Simon replied, 'Master, we worked hard al night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I wil payout the nets.'5 And Simon answering said to him: Master, we have labored all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net.
And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear,6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes, and their net broke.
so they signal ed to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, theyfilled both boats to sinking point.7 And they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking.
When Simon Peter saw this he fel at the knees of Jesus saying, 'Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.'8 Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
For he and all his companions were completely awestruck at the catch they had made;9 For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken.
so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. But Jesus said to Simon,'Do not be afraid; from now on it is people you wil be catching.'10 And so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
Then, bringing their boats back to land they left everything and fol owed him.11 And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things, they followed him.
Now it happened that Jesus was in one of the towns when suddenly a man appeared, covered with askin-disease. Seeing Jesus he fel on his face and implored him saying, 'Sir, if you are wil ing you can cleanseme.'12 And it came to pass, when he was ina certain city, behold a man full of leprosy, who seeing Jesus, and falling on his face, besought him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
He stretched out his hand, and touched him saying, 'I am wil ing. Be cleansed.' At once the skin-disease left him.13 And stretching forth his hand, he touched him, saying: I will. Be thou cleansed. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
He ordered him to tell no one, 'But go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering for yourcleansing just as Moses prescribed, as evidence to them.'14 And he charged him that he should tell no man, but, Go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.
But the news of him kept spreading, and large crowds would gather to hear him and to have theiril nesses cured,15 But the fame of him went abroad the more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
but he would go off to some deserted place and pray.16 And he retired into the desert, and prayed.
Now it happened that he was teaching one day, and Pharisees and teachers of the Law, who hadcome from every vil age in Galilee, from Judaea and from Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of theLord was there so that he should heal.17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he sat teaching, that there were also Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, that were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them.
And now some men appeared, bringing on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring inand lay down in front of him.18 And behold, men brought in a bed a man, who had the palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
But as they could find no way of getting the man through the crowd, they went up onto the top of thehouse and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front ofJesus.19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof, and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus.
Seeing their faith he said, 'My friend, your sins are forgiven you.'20 Whose faith when he saw, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
The scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. 'Who is this man, talking blasphemy? Who butGod alone can forgive sins?'21 And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made them this reply, 'What are these thoughts you have in yourhearts?22 And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering, he said to them: What is it you think in your hearts?
Which of these is easier: to say, "Your sins are forgiven you," or to say, "Get up and walk"?23 Which is easier to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk?
But to prove to you that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins,' -- he said to theparalysed man-'I order you: get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.'24 But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say to thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.
And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and wenthome praising God.25 And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay; and he went away to his own house, glorifying God.
They were all astounded and praised God and were fil ed with awe, saying, 'We have seen strangethings today.'26 And all were astonished; and they glorified God. And they were filled with fear, saying: We have seen wonderful things to day.
When he went out after this, he noticed a tax collector, Levi by name, sitting at the tax office, and saidto him, 'Fol ow me.'27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said to him: Follow me.
And leaving everything Levi got up and fol owed him.28 And leaving all things, he rose up and followed him.
In his honour Levi held a great reception in his house, and with them at table was a large gathering oftax col ectors and others.29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house; and there was a great company of publicans, and of others, that were at table with them.
The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said, 'Why do you eat and drink withtax col ectors and sinners?'30 But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying to his disciples: Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
Jesus said to them in reply, 'It is not those that are wel who need the doctor, but the sick.31 And Jesus answering, said to them: They that are whole, need not the physician: but they that are sick.
I have come to cal not the upright but sinners to repentance.'32 I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance.
They then said to him, 'John's disciples are always fasting and saying prayers, and the disciples of thePharisees, too, but yours go on eating and drinking.'33 And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees in like manner; but thine eat and drink?
Jesus replied, 'Surely you cannot make the bridegroom's attendants fast while the bridegroom is stillwith them?34 To whom he said: Can you make the children of the bridegroom fast, whilst the bridegroom is with them?
But the time wil come when the bridegroom is taken away from them; then, in those days, they wilfast.'35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then shall they fast in those days.
He also told them a parable, 'No one tears a piece from a new cloak to put it on an old cloak;otherwise, not only wil the new one be torn, but the piece taken from the new wil not match the old.36 And he spoke also a similitude to them: That no man putteth a piece from a new garment upon an old garment; otherwise he both rendeth the new, and the piece taken from the new agreeth not with the old.
'And nobody puts new wine in old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine wil burst the skins and run towaste, and the skins wil be ruined.37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottle: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles, and it will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost.
No; new wine must be put in fresh skins.38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
And nobody who has been drinking old wine wants new. "The old is good," he says.'39 And no man drinking old, hath presently a mind to new: for he saith, The old is better.
