Now it happened that he was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressinground him listening to the word of God,1 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר נִדְחַק הֲמוֹן הָעָם לִשְׁמֹעַ אֶת־דְּבַר הָאֱלֹהִים וְהוּא עֹמֵד עַל־יַד יַם־גִּנֵּיסָר
when he caught sight of two boats at the water's edge. The fishermen had got out of them and werewashing their nets.2 וַיַּרְא שְׁתֵּי אֳנִיּוֹת עֹמְדוֹת עַל־יַד הַיָּם וְהַדַּיָּגִים יָצְאוּ מֵהֶן וַיִּרְחֲצוּ אֵת הַמִּכְמֹרוֹת
He got into one of the boats -- it was Simon's -- and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then hesat down and taught the crowds from the boat.3 וַיֵּרֶד אֶל־אַחַת מִן־הָאֳנִיּוֹת אֲשֶׁר הִיא לְשִׁמְעוֹן וַיְבַקֵּשׁ מִמֶּנּוּ לְהוֹלִיכוֹ מְעַט מִן־הַיַּבָּשָׁה אֶל־הַיָּם וַיֵּשֶׁב וַיְלַמֵּד אֶת־הָעָם מִתּוֹךְ הָאֳנִיָּה
When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for acatch.'4 וַיְכַל לְדַבֵּר וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־שִׁמְעוֹן הוֹלִיכָה אֶל־עֹמֶק הַיָּם וְהוֹרִידוּ אֶת־מִכְמְרוֹתֵיכֶם לָצוּד
Simon replied, 'Master, we worked hard al night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I wil payout the nets.'5 וַיַּעַן שִׁמְעוֹן וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מוֹרֶה כָּל־הַלַּיְלָה יָגַעְנוּ וְלֹא לָכַדְנוּ מְאוּמָה אַךְ עַל־פִּי דְבָרְךָ אוֹרִיד אֶת־הַמִּכְמֹרֶת
And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear,6 וַיַּעֲשֹוּ־כֵן וַיִּלְכְּדוּ דָגִים הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד וַתִּקָּרַע מִכְמַרְתָּם
so they signal ed to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, theyfilled both boats to sinking point.7 וַיָּנִיפוּ יָד אֶל־חַבְרֵיהֶם אֲשֶׁר בָּאֳנִיָּה הַשֵּׁנִית לָבוֹא אֲלֵיהֶם וּלְעָזְרָם וַיָּבֹאוּ וַיְמַלְאוּ אֶת־שְׁתֵּי הָאֳנִיּוֹת עַד־כִּי שָׁקָעוּ
When Simon Peter saw this he fel at the knees of Jesus saying, 'Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.'8 וַיְהִי כִּרְאוֹת שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס אֶת־זֹאת וַיִּפֹּל לְבִרְכֵּי יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמַר אֲדֹנִי צֵא־נָא מֵעִמִּי כִּי־אִישׁ חוֹטֵא אָנֹכִי
For he and all his companions were completely awestruck at the catch they had made;9 כִּי שַׁמָּה הֶחֱזִיקָה אוֹתוֹ וְאֶת־כֹּל אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ עַל־צֵיד הַדָּגִים אֲשֶׁר צָדוּ
so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. But Jesus said to Simon,'Do not be afraid; from now on it is people you wil be catching.'10 וְכֵן גַּם אֶת־יַעֲקֹב וְאֶת־יוֹחָנָן בְּנֵי זַבְדַּי אֲשֶׁר הִתְחַבְּרוּ עִם־שִׁמְעוֹן וַיֹּאמֶר יֵשׁוּעַ אֶל־שִׁמְעוֹן אַל־תִּירָא מֵעַתָּה צוֹד תָּצוּד אֲנָשִׁים
Then, bringing their boats back to land they left everything and fol owed him.11 וַיּוֹלִיכוּ אֶת־הָאֳנִיּוֹת אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁה וַיַּעַזְבוּ אֶת־הַכֹּל וַיֵּלְכוּ אַחֲרָיו
Now it happened that Jesus was in one of the towns when suddenly a man appeared, covered with askin-disease. Seeing Jesus he fel on his face and implored him saying, 'Sir, if you are wil ing you can cleanseme.'12 וַיְהִי בִּהְיוֹתוֹ בְּאַחַת הֶעָרִים וְהִנֵּה־אִישׁ מָלֵא צָרַעַת וַיַּרְא אֶת־יֵשׁוּעַ וַיִּפֹּל עַל־פָּנָיו וַיִּתְחַנֵּן אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר אֲדֹנִי אִם־תַּחְפֹּץ תּוּכַל לְטַהֲרֵנִי
He stretched out his hand, and touched him saying, 'I am wil ing. Be cleansed.' At once the skin-disease left him.13 וַיִּשְׁלַח אֶת־יָדוֹ וַיִּגַּע־בּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר חָפֵץ אָנֹכִי טְהָר וּפִתְאֹם סָרָה מִמֶּנּוּ הַצָּרָעַת
He ordered him to tell no one, 'But go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering for yourcleansing just as Moses prescribed, as evidence to them.'14 וַיָּעַד בּוֹ לְבִלְתִּי סַפֵּר לְאִישׁ כִּי אִם־לֵךְ וְהֵרָאֵה אֶל־הַכֹּהֵן וְהַקְרֵב קָרְבָּן עַל־טָהֳרָתְךָ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה משֶׁה לְעֵדוּת לָהֶם
But the news of him kept spreading, and large crowds would gather to hear him and to have theiril nesses cured,15 וְשָׁמְעוֹ הוֹלֵךְ הָלוֹךְ וְגָדֵל וַיִּקָּבְצוּ עַם רַב לִשְׁמוֹעַ וּלְהֵרָפֵא בְיָדוֹ מִתַּחֲלוּאֵיהֶם
but he would go off to some deserted place and pray.16 וְהוּא סָר אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּרוֹת וַיִּתְפַּלָּל
Now it happened that he was teaching one day, and Pharisees and teachers of the Law, who hadcome from every vil age in Galilee, from Judaea and from Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of theLord was there so that he should heal.17 וַיְהִי בְּאַחַד הַיָּמִים וְהוּא מְלַמֵּד וַיֵּשְׁבוּ שָׁם פְּרוּשִׁים וּמוֹרֵי הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר בָּאוּ מִכָּל־כְּפָרֵי הַגָּלִיל וּמִיהוּדָה וִירוּשָׁלָיִם וּגְבוּרַת יְהוָֹה הָיְתָה־בּוֹ לִרְפּוֹא
And now some men appeared, bringing on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring inand lay down in front of him.18 וְהִנֵּה אֲנָשִׁים נוֹשְׂאִים אִישׁ בַּמִּטָּה וְהוּא נְכֵה אֵבָרִים וַיְבַקְשׁוּ לַהֲבִיאוֹ הַבַּיְתָה וְלָשֹוּם לְפָנָיו
But as they could find no way of getting the man through the crowd, they went up onto the top of thehouse and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front ofJesus.19 וְלֹא־מָצְאוּ דֶרֶךְ לְהַכְנִיסוֹ מֵרֹב הָעָם וַיַּעֲלוּ הַגָּגָה וַיּוֹרִידֻהוּ וְאֶת־עַרְשׂוֹ בֵּין הָרְעָפִים לְתוֹךְ הַבַּיִת לִפְנֵי יֵשׁוּעַ
Seeing their faith he said, 'My friend, your sins are forgiven you.'20 וַיַּרְא אֶת־אֱמוּנָתָם וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו בֶּן־אָדָם נִסְלְחוּ־לְךָ חַטֹּאתֶיךָ
The scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. 'Who is this man, talking blasphemy? Who butGod alone can forgive sins?'21 וַיָּחֵלּוּ הַסּוֹפְרִים וְהַפְּרוּשִׁים לַחֲשֹׁב מַחֲשָׁבוֹת לֵאמֹר מִי הוּא זֶה הַמְדַבֵּר גִּדּוּפִים מִי יוּכַל לִסְלֹחַ חֲטָאִים מִבַּלְעֲדֵי הָאֱלֹהִים לְבַדּוֹ
But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made them this reply, 'What are these thoughts you have in yourhearts?22 וַיֵּדַע יֵשׁוּעַ אֶת־מַחְשְׁבוֹתָם וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם מָה אַתֶּם חשְׁבִים בִּלְבַבְכֶם
Which of these is easier: to say, "Your sins are forgiven you," or to say, "Get up and walk"?23 מַה הוּא הַנָּקֵל הֶאָמֹר נִסְלְחוּ־לְךָ חַטֹּאתֶיךָ אִם־אָמֹר קוּם וְהִתְהַלֵּךְ
But to prove to you that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins,' -- he said to theparalysed man-'I order you: get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.'24 אַךְ לְמַעַן תֵּדְעוּן כִּי בֶן־הָאָדָם יֶשׁ־לוֹ הַשָּׁלְטָן בָּאָרֶץ לִסְלֹחַ חֲטָאִים וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־נְכֵה הָאֵבָרִים אֹמֵר אֲנִי אֵלֶיךָ קוּם וְשָׂא אֶת־עַרְשְׂךָ וְלֶךְ־לְךָ אֶל־בֵּיתֶךָ
And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and wenthome praising God.25 וַיְמַהֵר וַיָּקָם לְעֵינֵיהֶם וַיִּשָּׂא אֵת מִשְׁכָּבוֹ וַיֵּלֶךְ־לוֹ אֶל־בֵּיתוֹ מְהַלֵּל אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים
They were all astounded and praised God and were fil ed with awe, saying, 'We have seen strangethings today.'26 וְשַׁמָּה הֶחֱזִיקָה אֶת־כֻּלָּם וַיְבָרְכוּ אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים וַיִּמָּלְאוּ יִרְאָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ כִּי נִפְלָאוֹת רָאִינוּ הַיּוֹם
When he went out after this, he noticed a tax collector, Levi by name, sitting at the tax office, and saidto him, 'Fol ow me.'27 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי כֵן וַיַּרְא מוֹכֵס וּשְׁמוֹ לֵוִי יוֹשֵׁב בְּבֵית הַמֶּכֶס וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו לְכָה אַחֲרָי
And leaving everything Levi got up and fol owed him.28 וַיַּעֲזֹב אֶת־הַכֹּל וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלֶךְ אַחֲרָיו
In his honour Levi held a great reception in his house, and with them at table was a large gathering oftax col ectors and others.29 וַיַּעַשׂ־לוֹ לֵוִי מִשְׁתֶּה גָדוֹל בְּבֵיתוֹ וְעַם־רַב שֶׁל־מוֹכְסִים וַאֲנָשִׁים אֲחֵרִים הָיוּ מְסֻבִּים עִמָּהֶם
The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said, 'Why do you eat and drink withtax col ectors and sinners?'30 וַיִּלּוֹנוּ הַסּוֹפְרִים אֲשֶׁר בָּהֶם וְהַפְּרוּשִׁים עַל־תַּלְמִידָיו וַיֹּאמְרוּ לָמָה אַתֶּם אֹכְלִים וְשֹׁתִים עִם־הַמּוֹכְסִים וְהַחַטָּאִים
Jesus said to them in reply, 'It is not those that are wel who need the doctor, but the sick.31 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הַבְּרִיאִים אֵינָם צְרִיכִים לְרֹפֵא כִּי אִם־הַחֹלִים
I have come to cal not the upright but sinners to repentance.'32 לֹא בָאתִי לִקְרוֹא הַצַּדִּיקִים כִּי אִם־הַחַטָּאִים לִתְשׁוּבָה
They then said to him, 'John's disciples are always fasting and saying prayers, and the disciples of thePharisees, too, but yours go on eating and drinking.'33 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו הֵן תַּלְמִידֵי יוֹחָנָן צָמִים הַרְבֵּה וְאֹמְרִים תְּחִנּוֹת וְגַם תַּלְמִידֵי הַפְּרוּשִׁים עֹשִׂים כֵּן וְתַלְמִידֶיךָ אֹכְלִים וְשֹׁתִים
Jesus replied, 'Surely you cannot make the bridegroom's attendants fast while the bridegroom is stillwith them?34 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הֲתוּכְלוּ אֲנֹס בְּנֵי הַחֻפָּה לָצוּם וְהֶחָתָן עוֹד עִמָּהֶם
But the time wil come when the bridegroom is taken away from them; then, in those days, they wilfast.'35 וְאוּלָם יָמִים בָּאִים וְלֻקַּח מֵאִתָּם הֶחָתָן אָז יָצוּמוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵמָּה
He also told them a parable, 'No one tears a piece from a new cloak to put it on an old cloak;otherwise, not only wil the new one be torn, but the piece taken from the new wil not match the old.36 וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵיהֶם גַּם אֶת־הַמָּשָׁל הַזֶּה אֵין אִישׁ מַעֲלֶה טְלַאי שֶׁל־בֶּגֶד חָדָשׁ עַל־בֶּגֶד בָּלוּי כִּי אָז גַּם הֶחָדָשׁ יִקָּרֵעַ וְגַם לֹא־יִשְׁוֶה הַטְּלַאי הֶחָדָשׁ לַבָּלוּי
'And nobody puts new wine in old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine wil burst the skins and run towaste, and the skins wil be ruined.37 וְאֵין אִישׁ נֹתֵן יַיִן חָדָשׁ בְּנֹאדוֹת בָּלִים כִּי אָז הַיַּיִן הֶחָדָשׁ יְבַקַּע אֶת־הַנֹּאדוֹת וְהוּא יִשָּׁפֵךְ וְהַנֹּאדוֹת יֹאבֵדוּ
No; new wine must be put in fresh skins.38 אַךְ יֻתַּן הַיַּיִן הֶחָדָשׁ בְּנֹאדוֹת חֲדָשִׁים וּשְׁנֵיהֶם יַחְדָּו יִשָּׁמֵרוּ
And nobody who has been drinking old wine wants new. "The old is good," he says.'39
