Luke 5

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 Now it happened that he was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressinground him listening to the word of God,	1 Factum est autem, cum turba urgeret illum et audiret verbum Dei, et ipsestabat secus stagnum Genesareth
2 when he caught sight of two boats at the water's edge. The fishermen had got out of them and werewashing their nets.	2 et vidit duas naves stantes secus stagnum;piscatores autem descenderant de illis et lavabant retia.
3 He got into one of the boats -- it was Simon's -- and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then hesat down and taught the crowds from the boat.	3 Ascendens autem inunam navem, quae erat Simonis, rogavit eum a terra reducere pusillum; et sedensdocebat de navicula turbas.
4 When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for acatch.'	4 Ut cessavit autem loqui, dixit ad Simonem: “ Duc in altum et laxate retiavestra in capturam ”.
5 Simon replied, 'Master, we worked hard al night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I wil payout the nets.'	5 Et respondens Simon dixit: “ Praeceptor, per totamnoctem laborantes nihil cepimus; in verbo autem tuo laxabo retia ”.
6 And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear,	6 Et cumhoc fecissent, concluserunt piscium multitudinem copiosam; rumpebantur autemretia eorum.
7 so they signal ed to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, theyfilled both boats to sinking point.	7 Et annuerunt sociis, qui erant in alia navi, ut venirent etadiuvarent eos; et venerunt et impleverunt ambas naviculas, ita ut mergerentur.
8 When Simon Peter saw this he fel at the knees of Jesus saying, 'Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.'	8 Quod cum videret Simon Petrus, procidit ad genua Iesu dicens: “ Exi a me,quia homo peccator sum, Domine ”.
9 For he and all his companions were completely awestruck at the catch they had made;	9 Stupor enim circumdederat eum et omnes,qui cum illo erant, in captura piscium, quos ceperant;
10 so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. But Jesus said to Simon,'Do not be afraid; from now on it is people you wil be catching.'	10 similiter autem etIacobum et Ioannem, filios Zebedaei, qui erant socii Simonis. Et ait ad SimonemIesus: “ Noli timere; ex hoc iam homines eris capiens ”.
11 Then, bringing their boats back to land they left everything and fol owed him.	11 Et subductis adterram navibus, relictis omnibus, secuti sunt illum.
12 Now it happened that Jesus was in one of the towns when suddenly a man appeared, covered with askin-disease. Seeing Jesus he fel on his face and implored him saying, 'Sir, if you are wil ing you can cleanseme.'	12 Et factum est, cum esset in una civitatum, et ecce vir plenus lepra; etvidens Iesum et procidens in faciem rogavit eum dicens: “ Domine, si vis,potes me mundare ”.
13 He stretched out his hand, and touched him saying, 'I am wil ing. Be cleansed.' At once the skin-disease left him.	13 Et extendens manum tetigit illum dicens: “ Volo,mundare! ”; et confestim lepra discessit ab illo.
14 He ordered him to tell no one, 'But go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering for yourcleansing just as Moses prescribed, as evidence to them.'	14 Et ipse praecepit illi,ut nemini diceret, sed: “ Vade, ostende te sacerdoti et offer pro emundationetua, sicut praecepit Moyses, in testimonium illis ”.
15 But the news of him kept spreading, and large crowds would gather to hear him and to have theiril nesses cured,	15 Perambulabat autemmagis sermo de illo, et conveniebant turbae multae, ut audirent et curarentur abinfirmitatibus suis;
16 but he would go off to some deserted place and pray.	16 ipse autem secedebat in desertis et orabat.
17 Now it happened that he was teaching one day, and Pharisees and teachers of the Law, who hadcome from every vil age in Galilee, from Judaea and from Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of theLord was there so that he should heal.	17 Et factum est, in una dierum, et ipse erat docens, et erant pharisaeisedentes et legis doctores, qui venerant ex omni castello Galilaeae et Iudaeaeet Ierusalem; et virtus Domini erat ei ad sanandum.
18 And now some men appeared, bringing on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring inand lay down in front of him.	18 Et ecce viri portantes inlecto hominem, qui erat paralyticus, et quaerebant eum inferre et ponere anteeum.
19 But as they could find no way of getting the man through the crowd, they went up onto the top of thehouse and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front ofJesus.	19 Et non invenientes qua parte illum inferrent prae turba, ascenderuntsupra tectum et per tegulas summiserunt illum cum lectulo in medium ante Iesum.
20 Seeing their faith he said, 'My friend, your sins are forgiven you.'	20 Quorum fidem ut vidit, dixit: “ Homo, remittuntur tibi peccata tua ”.
21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. 'Who is this man, talking blasphemy? Who butGod alone can forgive sins?'	21 Et coeperunt cogitare scribae et pharisaei dicentes: “ Quis est hic, quiloquitur blasphemias? Quis potest dimittere peccata nisi solus Deus? ”.
22 But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made them this reply, 'What are these thoughts you have in yourhearts?	22 Utcognovit autem Iesus cogitationes eorum, respondens dixit ad illos: “ Quidcogitatis in cordibus vestris?
23 Which of these is easier: to say, "Your sins are forgiven you," or to say, "Get up and walk"?	23 Quid est facilius, dicere: “Dimittuntur tibipeccata tua”, an dicere: “Surge et ambula”?
24 But to prove to you that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins,' -- he said to theparalysed man-'I order you: get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.'	24 Ut autem sciatis quiaFilius hominis potestatem habet in terra dimittere peccata — ait paralytico - :Tibi dico: Surge, tolle lectulum tuum et vade in domum tuam ”.
25 And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and wenthome praising God.	25 Et confestimsurgens coram illis tulit, in quo iacebat, et abiit in domum suam magnificansDeum.
26 They were all astounded and praised God and were fil ed with awe, saying, 'We have seen strangethings today.'	26 Et stupor apprehendit omnes, et magnificabant Deum; et repleti sunttimore dicentes: “ Vidimus mirabilia hodie ”.
27 When he went out after this, he noticed a tax collector, Levi by name, sitting at the tax office, and saidto him, 'Fol ow me.'	27 Et post haec exiit et vidit publicanum nomine Levi sedentem ad teloneum etait illi: “ Sequere me ”.
28 And leaving everything Levi got up and fol owed him.	28 Et relictis omnibus, surgens secutus est eum.
29 In his honour Levi held a great reception in his house, and with them at table was a large gathering oftax col ectors and others.	29 Et fecit ei convivium magnum Levi in domo sua; et erat turba multapublicanorum et aliorum, qui cum illis erant discumbentes.
30 The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said, 'Why do you eat and drink withtax col ectors and sinners?'	30 Et murmurabantpharisaei et scribae eorum adversus discipulos eius dicentes: “ Quare cumpublicanis et peccatoribus manducatis et bibitis? ”.
31 Jesus said to them in reply, 'It is not those that are wel who need the doctor, but the sick.	31 Et respondens Iesusdixit ad illos: “ Non egent, qui sani sunt, medico, sed qui male habent.
32 I have come to cal not the upright but sinners to repentance.'	32 Non veni vocare iustos sed peccatores in paenitentiam ”.
33 They then said to him, 'John's disciples are always fasting and saying prayers, and the disciples of thePharisees, too, but yours go on eating and drinking.'	33 At illi dixerunt ad eum: “ Discipuli Ioannis ieiunant frequenter etobsecrationes faciunt, similiter et pharisaeorum; tui autem edunt et bibunt ”.
34 Jesus replied, 'Surely you cannot make the bridegroom's attendants fast while the bridegroom is stillwith them?	34 Quibus Iesus ait: “ Numquid potestis convivas nuptiarum, dum cum illis estsponsus, facere ieiunare?
35 But the time wil come when the bridegroom is taken away from them; then, in those days, they wilfast.'	35 Venient autem dies; et cum ablatus fuerit ab illissponsus, tunc ieiunabunt in illis diebus ”.
36 He also told them a parable, 'No one tears a piece from a new cloak to put it on an old cloak;otherwise, not only wil the new one be torn, but the piece taken from the new wil not match the old.	36 Dicebat autem et similitudinemad illos: “ Nemo abscindit commissuram a vestimento novo et immittit investimentum vetus; alioquin et novum rumpet, et veteri non conveniet commissuraa novo.
37 'And nobody puts new wine in old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine wil burst the skins and run towaste, and the skins wil be ruined.	37 Et nemo mittit vinum novum in utres veteres; alioquin rumpet vinumnovum utres et ipsum effundetur, et utres peribunt;
38 No; new wine must be put in fresh skins.	38 sed vinum novum in utresnovos mittendum est.
39 And nobody who has been drinking old wine wants new. "The old is good," he says.'	39 Et nemo bibens vetus vult novum; dicit enim: “Vetusmelius est!” ”.
