Luke 1

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Seeing that many others have undertaken to draw up accounts of the events that have reached theirfulfilment among us,	1 Muchos han tratado de relatar ordenadamente los acontecimientos que se cumplieron entre nosotros,

5 In the days of King Herod of Judaea there lived a priest cal ed Zechariah who belonged to the Abijahsection of the priesthood, and he had a wife, Elizabeth by name, who was a descendant of Aaron.	5 En tiempos de Herodes, rey de Judea, había un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, de la clase sacerdotal de Abías. Su mujer, llamada Isabel, era descendiente de Aarón.
6 Both were upright in the sight of God and impeccably carried out al the commandments andobservances of the Lord.	6 Ambos eran justos a los ojos de Dios y seguían en forma irreprochable todos los mandamientos y preceptos del Señor.
7 But they were childless: Elizabeth was barren and they were both advanced in years.	7 Pero no tenían hijos, porque Isabel era estéril; y los dos eran de edad avanzada.
8 Now it happened that it was the turn of his section to serve, and he was exercising his priestly officebefore God	8 Un día en que su clase estaba de turno y Zacarías ejercía la función sacerdotal delante de Dios,
9 when it fell to him by lot, as the priestly custom was, to enter the Lord's sanctuary and burn incensethere.	9 le tocó en suerte, según la costumbre litúrgica, entrar en el Santuario del Señor para quemar el incienso.
10 And at the hour of incense all the people were outside, praying.	10 Toda la asamblea del pueblo permanecía afuera, en oración, mientras se ofrecía el incienso.
11 Then there appeared to him the angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense.	11 Entonces se le apareció el Angel del Señor, de pie, a la derecha del altar del incienso.
12 The sight disturbed Zechariah and he was overcome with fear.	12 Al verlo, Zacarías quedó desconcertado y tuvo miedo.
13 But the angel said to him, 'Zechariah, do not be afraid, for your prayer has been heard. Your wifeElizabeth is to bear you a son and you shal name him John.	13 Pero el Angel le dijo: «No temas, Zacarías; tu súplica ha sido escuchada. Isabel, tu esposa, te dará un hijo al que llamarás Juan.
14 He will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth,	14 El será para ti un motivo de gozo y de alegría, y muchos se alegrarán de su nacimiento,
15 for he wil be great in the sight of the Lord; he must drink no wine, no strong drink; even from hismother's womb he wil be filled with the Holy Spirit,	15 porque será grande a los ojos del Señor. No beberá vino ni bebida alcohólica; estará lleno del Espíritu Santo desde el seno de su madre,
16 and he wil bring back many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.	16 y hará que muchos israelitas vuelvan al Señor, su Dios.
17 With the spirit and power of Elijah, he wil go before him to reconcile fathers to their children and thedisobedient to the good sense of the upright, preparing for the Lord a people fit for him.'	17 Precederá al Señor con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, para reconciliar a los padres con sus hijos y atraer a los rebeldes a la sabiduría de los justos, preparando así al Señor un Pueblo bien dispuesto».
18 Zechariah said to the angel, 'How can I know this? I am an old man and my wife is getting on in years.'	18 Pero Zacarías dijo al Angel: «¿Cómo puedo estar seguro de esto? Porque yo soy anciano y mi esposa es de edad avanzada».
19 The angel replied, 'I am Gabriel, who stand in God's presence, and I have been sent to speak to youand bring you this good news.	19 El Angel le respondió: «Yo soy Gabriel, el que está delante de Dios, y he sido enviado para hablarte y anunciarte esta buena noticia.
20 Look! Since you did not believe my words, which wil come true at their appointed time, you will besilenced and have no power of speech until this has happened.'	20 Te quedarás mudo, sin poder hablar hasta el día en que sucedan estas cosas, por no haber creído en mis palabras, que se cumplirán a su debido tiempo».
21 Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he stayed in the sanctuaryso long.	21 Mientras tanto, el pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías, extrañado de que permaneciera tanto tiempo en el Santuario.
22 When he came out he could not speak to them, and they realised that he had seen a vision in thesanctuary. But he could only make signs to them and remained dumb.	22 Cuando salió, no podía hablarles, y todos comprendieron que había tenido alguna visión en el Santuario. El se expresaba por señas, porque había quedado mudo.
23 When his time of service came to an end he returned home.	23 Al cumplirse el tiempo de su servicio en el Templo, regresó a su casa.
24 Some time later his wife Elizabeth conceived and for five months she kept to herself, saying,	24 Poco después, su esposa Isabel concibió un hijo y permaneció oculta durante cinco meses.
25 'The Lord has done this for me, now that it has pleased him to take away the humiliation I suffered inpublic.'	25 Ella pensaba: «Esto es lo que el Señor ha hecho por mí, cuando decidió librarme de lo que me avergonzaba ante los hombres».
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee cal ed Nazareth,	26 En el sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.	27 a una virgen que estaba comprometida con un hombre perteneciente a la familia de David, llamado José. El nombre de la virgen era María.
28 He went in and said to her, 'Rejoice, you who enjoy God's favour! The Lord is with you.'	28 El Angel entró en su casa y la saludó, diciendo: «¡Alégrate!, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo».
29 She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean,	29 Al oír estas palabras, ella quedó desconcertada y se preguntaba qué podía significar ese saludo.
30 but the angel said to her, 'Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God's favour.	30 Pero el Angel le dijo: «No temas, María, porque Dios te ha favorecido.
31 Look! You are to conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus.	31 Concebirás y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús;
32 He will be great and wil be cal ed Son of the Most High. The Lord God wil give him the throne of hisancestor David;	32 él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo. El Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre,
33 he wil rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign wil have no end.'	33 reinará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre y su reino no tendrá fin».
34 Mary said to the angel, 'But how can this come about, since I have no knowledge of man?'	34 María dijo al Angel: «¿Cómo puede ser eso, si yo no tengo relaciones con ningún hombre?».
35 The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit wil come upon you, and the power of the Most High wil coveryou with its shadow. And so the child wil be holy and will be cal ed Son of God.	35 El Angel le respondió: «El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. Por eso el niño será Santo y será llamado Hijo de Dios.
36 And I tel you this too: your cousin Elizabeth also, in her old age, has conceived a son, and she whompeople cal ed barren is now in her sixth month,	36 También tu parienta Isabel concibió un hijo a pesar de su vejez, y la que era considerada estéril, ya se encuentra en su sexto mes,
37 for nothing is impossible to God.'	37 porque no hay nada imposible para Dios».
38 Mary said, 'You see before you the Lord's servant, let it happen to me as you have said.' And the angelleft her.	38 María dijo entonces: «Yo soy la servidora del Señor, que se cumpla en mí lo que has dicho».Y el Angel se alejó.
39 Mary set out at that time and went as quickly as she could into the hil country to a town in Judah.	39 En aquellos días, María partió y fue sin demora a un pueblo de la montaña de Judá.
40 She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth.	40 Entró en la casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel.
41 Now it happened that as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt in her womb andElizabeth was fil ed with the Holy Spirit.	41 Apenas esta oyó el saludo de María, el niño saltó de alegría en su seno, e Isabel, llena del Espíritu Santo,
42 She gave a loud cry and said, 'Of al women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of yourwomb.	42 exclamó: «¡Tú eres bendita entre todas las mujeres y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre!
43 Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?	43 ¿Quién soy yo, para que la madre de mi Señor venga a visitarme?
44 Look, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy.	44 Apenas oí tu saludo, el niño saltó de alegría en mi seno.
45 Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.'	45 Feliz de ti por haber creído que se cumplirá lo que te fue anunciado de parte del Señor».
46 And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord	46 María dijo entonces: «Mi alma canta la grandeza del Señor,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;	47 y mi espíritu se estremece de gozo en Dios, mi salvador,
48 because he has looked upon the humiliation of his servant. Yes, from now onwards all generations willcal me blessed,	48 porque el miró con bondad la pequeñez de tu servidora. En adelante todas las generaciones me llamarán feliz,
49 for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name,	49 porque el Todopoderoso he hecho en mí grandes cosas: ¡su Nombre es santo!
50 and his faithful love extends age after age to those who fear him.	50 Su misericordia se extiende de generación en generación sobre aquellos que lo temen.
51 He has used the power of his arm, he has routed the arrogant of heart.	51 Desplegó la fuerza de su brazo, dispersó a los soberbios de corazón.
52 He has pul ed down princes from their thrones and raised high the lowly.	52 Derribó a los poderosos de su trono y elevó a los humildes.
53 He has fil ed the starving with good things, sent the rich away empty.	53 Colmó de bienes a los hambrientos y despidió a los ricos con las manos vacías.
54 He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his faithful love	54 Socorrió a Israel, su servidor, acordándose de su misericordia,
55 -according to the promise he made to our ancestors -- of his mercy to Abraham and to hisdescendants for ever.	55 como lo había prometido a nuestros padres, en favor de Abraham y de su descendencia para siempre».
56 Mary stayed with her some three months and then went home.	56 María permaneció con Isabel unos tres meses y luego regresó a su casa.
57 The time came for Elizabeth to have her child, and she gave birth to a son;	57 Cuando llegó el tiempo en que Isabel debía ser madre, dio a luz un hijo.
58 and when her neighbours and relations heard that the Lord had lavished on her his faithful love, theyshared her joy.	58 Al enterarse sus vecinos y parientes de la gran misericordia con que Dios la había tratado, se alegraban con ella.
59 Now it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; they were going to call himZechariah after his father,	59 A los ocho días, se reunieron para circuncidar al niño, y querían llamarlo Zacarías, como su padre;
60 but his mother spoke up. 'No,' she said, 'he is to be called John.'	60 pero la madre dijo: «No, debe llamarse Juan».
61 They said to her, 'But no one in your family has that name,'	61 Ellos le decían: «No hay nadie en tu familia que lleve ese nombre».
62 and made signs to his father to find out what he wanted him cal ed.	62 Entonces preguntaron por señas al padre qué nombre quería que le pusieran.
63 The father asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, 'His name is John.' And they were al astonished.	63 Este pidió una pizarra y escribió: «Su nombre es Juan». Todos quedaron admirados. ]
64 At that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God.	64 Y en ese mismo momento, Zacarías recuperó el habla y comenzó a alabar a Dios.
65 Al their neighbours were filled with awe and the whole affair was talked about throughout the hilcountry of Judaea.	65 Este acontecimiento produjo una gran impresión entre la gente de los alrededores, y se lo comentaba en toda la región montañosa de Judea.
66 Al those who heard of it treasured it in their hearts. 'What will this child turn out to be?' they wondered.And indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.	66 Todos los que se enteraron guardaban este recuerdo en su corazón y se decían: «¿Qué llegará a ser este niño?». Porque la mano del Señor estaba con él.
67 His father Zechariah was fil ed with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:	67 Entonces Zacarías, su padre, quedó lleno del Espíritu Santo y dijo proféticamente:
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited his people, he has set them free,	68 «Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de Israel, porque ha visitado y redimido a su Pueblo,
69 and he has established for us a saving power in the House of his servant David,	69 y nos ha dado un poderoso Salvador en la casa de David, su servidor,
70 just as he proclaimed, by the mouth of his holy prophets from ancient times,	70 como lo había anunciado mucho tiempo antes, por boca de sus santos profetas,
71 that he would save us from our enemies and from the hands of al those who hate us,	71 para salvarnos de nuestros enemigos y de las manos de todos los que nos odian.
72 and show faithful love to our ancestors, and so keep in mind his holy covenant.	72 Así tuvo misericordia de nuestros padres y se acordó de su santa Alianza,
73 This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,	73 del juramento que hizo a nuestro padre Abraham
74 that he would grant us, free from fear, to be delivered from the hands of our enemies,	74 de concedernos que, libres de temor, arrancados de las manos de nuestros enemigos,
75 to serve him in holiness and uprightness in his presence, al our days.	75 lo sirvamos en santidad y justicia, bajo su mirada, durante toda nuestra vida.
76 And you, little child, you shall be cal ed Prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord toprepare a way for him,	76 Y tú, niño, serás llamado Profeta del Altísimo, porque irás delante del Señor preparando sus caminos,
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,	77 para hacer conocer a su Pueblo la salvación mediante el perdón de los pecados;
78 because of the faithful love of our God in which the rising Sun has come from on high to visit us,	78 gracias a la misericordiosa ternura de nuestro Dios, que nos traerá del cielo la visita del Sol naciente,
79 to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow dark as death, and to guide our feet into theway of peace.	79 para iluminar a los que están en las tinieblas y en la sombra de la muerte, y guiar nuestros pasos por el camino de la paz».
80 Meanwhile the child grew up and his spirit grew strong. And he lived in the desert until the day heappeared openly to Israel.	80 El niño iba creciendo y se fortalecía en su espíritu; y vivió en lugares desiertos hasta el día en que se manifestó a Israel.
