NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Seeing that many others have undertaken to draw up accounts of the events that have reached theirfulfilment among us,	1 Puesto que muchos han intentado narrar ordenadamente las cosas que se han verificado entre nosotros,

5 In the days of King Herod of Judaea there lived a priest cal ed Zechariah who belonged to the Abijahsection of the priesthood, and he had a wife, Elizabeth by name, who was a descendant of Aaron.	5 Hubo en los días de Herodes, rey de Judea, un sacerdote, llamado Zacarías, del grupo de Abías, casado con una mujer descendiente de Aarón, que se llamaba Isabel;
6 Both were upright in the sight of God and impeccably carried out al the commandments andobservances of the Lord.	6 los dos eran justos ante Dios, y caminaban sin tacha en todos los mandamientos y preceptos del Señor.
7 But they were childless: Elizabeth was barren and they were both advanced in years.	7 No tenían hijos, porque Isabel era estéril, y los dos de avanzada edad.
8 Now it happened that it was the turn of his section to serve, and he was exercising his priestly officebefore God	8 Sucedió que, mientras oficiaba delante de Dios, en el turno de su grupo,

12 The sight disturbed Zechariah and he was overcome with fear.	12 Al verle Zacarías, se turbó, y el temor se apoderó de él.
13 But the angel said to him, 'Zechariah, do not be afraid, for your prayer has been heard. Your wifeElizabeth is to bear you a son and you shal name him John.	13 El ángel le dijo: «No temas, Zacarías, porque tu petición ha sido escuchada; Isabel, tu mujer, te dará a luz un hijo, a quien pondrás por nombre Juan;
14 He will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth,	14 será para ti gozo y alegría, y muchos se gozarán en su nacimiento,
15 for he wil be great in the sight of the Lord; he must drink no wine, no strong drink; even from hismother's womb he wil be filled with the Holy Spirit,	15 porque será grande ante el Señor; no beberá vino ni licor; estará lleno de Espíritu Santo ya desde el seno de su madre,
16 and he wil bring back many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.	16 y a muchos de los hijos de Israel, les convertirá al Señor su Dios,
17 With the spirit and power of Elijah, he wil go before him to reconcile fathers to their children and thedisobedient to the good sense of the upright, preparing for the Lord a people fit for him.'	17 e irá delante de él con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y a los rebeldes a la prudencia de los justos, para preparar al Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto».
18 Zechariah said to the angel, 'How can I know this? I am an old man and my wife is getting on in years.'	18 Zacarías dijo al ángel: «¿En qué lo conoceré? Porque yo soy viejo y mi mujer avanzada en edad».
19 The angel replied, 'I am Gabriel, who stand in God's presence, and I have been sent to speak to youand bring you this good news.	19 El ángel le respondió: «Yo soy Gabriel, el que está delante de Dios, y he sido enviado para hablarte y anunciarte esta buena nueva.
20 Look! Since you did not believe my words, which wil come true at their appointed time, you will besilenced and have no power of speech until this has happened.'	20 Mira, te vas a quedar mudo y no podrás hablar hasta el día en que sucedan estas cosas, porque no diste crédito a mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su tiempo».
21 Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he stayed in the sanctuaryso long.	21 El pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías y se extrañaban de su demora en el Santuario.
22 When he came out he could not speak to them, and they realised that he had seen a vision in thesanctuary. But he could only make signs to them and remained dumb.	22 Cuando salió, no podía hablarles, y comprendieron que había tenido una visión en el Santuario; les hablabla por señas, y permaneció mudo.
23 When his time of service came to an end he returned home.	23 Y sucedió que cuando se cumplieron los días de su servicio, se fue a su casa.
24 Some time later his wife Elizabeth conceived and for five months she kept to herself, saying,	24 Días después, concibió su mujer Isabel; y se mantuvo oculta durante cinco meses
25 'The Lord has done this for me, now that it has pleased him to take away the humiliation I suffered inpublic.'	25 diciendo: «Esto es lo que ha hecho por mí el Señor en los días en que se dignó quitar mi oprobio entre los hombres».
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee cal ed Nazareth,	26 Al sexto mes fue enviado por Dios el ángel Gabriel a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.	27 a una virgen desposada con un hombre llamado José, de la casa de David; el nombre de la virgen era María.
28 He went in and said to her, 'Rejoice, you who enjoy God's favour! The Lord is with you.'	28 Y entrando, le dijo: «Alégrate, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo».
29 She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean,	29 Ella se conturbó por estas palabras, y discurría qué significaría aquel saludo.
30 but the angel said to her, 'Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God's favour.	30 El ángel le dijo: «No temas, María, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios;
31 Look! You are to conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus.	31 vas a concebir en el seno y vas a dar a luz un hijo, a quien pondrás por nombre Jesús.
32 He will be great and wil be cal ed Son of the Most High. The Lord God wil give him the throne of hisancestor David;	32 El será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo, y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre;
33 he wil rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign wil have no end.'	33 reinará sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos y su reino no tendrá fin».
34 Mary said to the angel, 'But how can this come about, since I have no knowledge of man?'	34 María respondió al ángel: «¿Cómo será esto, puesto que no conozco varón?»
35 The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit wil come upon you, and the power of the Most High wil coveryou with its shadow. And so the child wil be holy and will be cal ed Son of God.	35 El ángel le respondió: «El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra; por eso el que ha de nacer será santo y será llamado Hijo de Dios.
36 And I tel you this too: your cousin Elizabeth also, in her old age, has conceived a son, and she whompeople cal ed barren is now in her sixth month,	36 Mira, también Isabel, tu pariente, ha concebido un hijo en su vejez, y este es ya el sexto mes de aquella que llamaban estéril,
37 for nothing is impossible to God.'	37 porque ninguna cosa es imposible para Dios».
38 Mary said, 'You see before you the Lord's servant, let it happen to me as you have said.' And the angelleft her.	38 Dijo María: «He aquí la esclava del Señor; hágase en mí según tu palabra». Y el ángel dejándola se fue.
39 Mary set out at that time and went as quickly as she could into the hil country to a town in Judah.	39 En aquellos días, se levantó María y se fue con prontitud a la región montañosa, a una ciudad de Judá;
40 She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth.	40 entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel.
41 Now it happened that as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt in her womb andElizabeth was fil ed with the Holy Spirit.	41 Y sucedió que, en cuanto oyó Isabel el saludo de María, saltó de gozo el niño en su seno, e Isabel quedó llena de Espíritu Santo;
42 She gave a loud cry and said, 'Of al women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of yourwomb.	42 y exclamando con gran voz, dijo: «Bendita tú entre las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu seno;
43 Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?	43 y ¿de dónde a mí que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?
44 Look, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy.	44 Porque, apenas llegó a mis oídos la voz de tu saludo, saltó de gozo el niño en mi seno.
45 Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.'	45 ¡Feliz la que ha creído que se cumplirían las cosas que le fueron dichas de parte del Señor!»
46 And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord	46 Y dijo María: «Engrandece mi alma al Señor
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;	47 y mi espíritu se alegra en Dios mi salvador
48 because he has looked upon the humiliation of his servant. Yes, from now onwards all generations willcal me blessed,	48 porque ha puesto los ojos en la humildad de su esclava, por eso desde ahora todas las generaciones me llamarán bienaventurada,
49 for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name,	49 porque ha hecho en mi favor maravillas el Poderoso, Santo es su nombre
50 and his faithful love extends age after age to those who fear him.	50 y su misericordia alcanza de generación en generación a los que le temen.
51 He has used the power of his arm, he has routed the arrogant of heart.	51 Desplegó la fuerza de su brazo, dispersó a los que son soberbios en su propio corazón.
52 He has pul ed down princes from their thrones and raised high the lowly.	52 Derribó a los potentados de sus tronos y exaltó a los humildes.
53 He has fil ed the starving with good things, sent the rich away empty.	53 A los hambrientos colmó de bienes y despidió a los ricos sin nada.
54 He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his faithful love	54 Acogió a Israel, su siervo, acordándose de la misericordia
55 -according to the promise he made to our ancestors -- of his mercy to Abraham and to hisdescendants for ever.	55 - como había anunciado a nuestros padres - en favor de Abraham y de su linaje por los siglos».
56 Mary stayed with her some three months and then went home.	56 María permanceció con ella unos tres meses, y se volvió a su casa.
57 The time came for Elizabeth to have her child, and she gave birth to a son;	57 Se le cumplió a Isabel el tiempo de dar a luz, y tuvo un hijo.
58 and when her neighbours and relations heard that the Lord had lavished on her his faithful love, theyshared her joy.	58 Oyeron sus vecinos y parientes que el Señor le había hecho gran misericordia, y se congratulaban con ella.
59 Now it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; they were going to call himZechariah after his father,	59 Y sucedió que al octavo día fueron a circuncidar al niño, y querían ponerle el nombre de su padre, Zacarías,
60 but his mother spoke up. 'No,' she said, 'he is to be called John.'	60 pero su madre, tomando la palabra, dijo: «No; se ha de llamar Juan».
61 They said to her, 'But no one in your family has that name,'	61 Le decían: «No hay nadie en tu parentela que tenga ese nombre».
62 and made signs to his father to find out what he wanted him cal ed.	62 Y preguntaban por señas a su padre cómo quería que se le llamase.
63 The father asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, 'His name is John.' And they were al astonished.	63 El pidió una tablilla y escribió: «Juan es su nombre». Y todos quedaron admirados.
64 At that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God.	64 Y al punto se abrió su boca y su lengua, y hablaba bendiciendo a Dios.
65 Al their neighbours were filled with awe and the whole affair was talked about throughout the hilcountry of Judaea.	65 Invadió el temor a todos sus vecinos, y en toda la montaña de Judea se comentaban todas estas cosas;
66 Al those who heard of it treasured it in their hearts. 'What will this child turn out to be?' they wondered.And indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.	66 todos los que las oían las grababan en su corazón, diciendo: «Pues ¿qué será este niño?» Porque, en efecto, la mano del Señor estaba con él.
67 His father Zechariah was fil ed with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:	67 Zacarías, su padre, quedó lleno de Espíritu Santo, y profetizó diciendo:
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited his people, he has set them free,	68 «Bendito el Señor Dios de Israel porque ha visitado y redimido a su pueblo.
69 and he has established for us a saving power in the House of his servant David,	69 y nos ha suscitado una fuerza salvadora en la casa de David, su siervo,
70 just as he proclaimed, by the mouth of his holy prophets from ancient times,	70 como había prometido desde tiempos antiguos, por boca de sus santos profetas,
71 that he would save us from our enemies and from the hands of al those who hate us,	71 que nos salvaría de nuestros enemigos y de las manos de todos los que nos odiaban
72 and show faithful love to our ancestors, and so keep in mind his holy covenant.	72 haciendo misericordia a nuestros padres y recordando su santa alianza
73 This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,	73 y el juramento que juró a Abraham nuestro padre, de concedernos
74 that he would grant us, free from fear, to be delivered from the hands of our enemies,	74 que, libres de manos enemigas, podamos servirle sin temor
75 to serve him in holiness and uprightness in his presence, al our days.	75 en santidad y justicia delante de él todos nuestros días.
76 And you, little child, you shall be cal ed Prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord toprepare a way for him,	76 Y tú, niño, serás llamado profeta del Altísimo, pues irás delante del Señor para preparar sus caminos
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,	77 y dar a su pueblo conocimiento de salvación por el perdón de sus pecados,
78 because of the faithful love of our God in which the rising Sun has come from on high to visit us,	78 por las entrañas de misericordia de nuestro Dios, que harán que nos visite una Luz de la altura,
79 to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow dark as death, and to guide our feet into theway of peace.	79 a fin de iluminar a los que habitan en tinieblas y sombras de muerte y guiar nuestros pasos por el camino de la paz».
80 Meanwhile the child grew up and his spirit grew strong. And he lived in the desert until the day heappeared openly to Israel.	80 El niño crecía y su espíritu se fortalecía; vivió en los desiertos hasta el día de su manifestación a Israel.
