1 After leaving there, he came into the territory of Judaea and Transjordan. And again crowds gatheredround him, and again he taught them, as his custom was.	1 וַיָּקָם מִשָּׁם וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל־גְּבוּל יְהוּדָה מֵעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן וַיִּקָּהֲלוּ עוֹד אֵלָיו הֲמוֹן עָם וַיְלַמְּדֵם כְּפַעַם בְּפָעַם
2 Some Pharisees approached him and asked, 'Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?' They wereputting him to the test.	2 וַיִּגְּשׁוּ אֵלָיו הַפְּרוּשִׁים וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּ אִם־יוּכַל אִישׁ לְשַׁלַּח אֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹ וְהֵם מְנַסִּים אֹתוֹ
3 He answered them, 'What did Moses command you?'	3 וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם מַה־צִּוָּה אֶתְכֶם משֶׁה
4 They replied, 'Moses al owed us to draw up a writ of dismissal in cases of divorce.'	4 וַיֹּאמְרוּ משֶׁה הִתִּיר לִכְתֹּב סֵפֶר כְּרִיתֻת וּלְשַׁלֵּחַ
5 Then Jesus said to them, 'It was because you were so hard hearted that he wrote this commandmentfor you.	5 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם בַּעֲבוּר קְשִׁי לְבַבְכֶם כָּתַב לָכֶם אֶת־הַמִּצְוָה הַזֹּאת
6 But from the beginning of creation he made them male and female.	6 אֲבָל מֵרֵאשִׁית הַבְּרִיאָה זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה עָשָׂה אֹתָם אֱלֹהִים
7 This is why a man leaves his father and mother,	7 עַל־כֵּן יַעֲזָב־אִישׁ אֶת־אָבִיו וְאֶת־אִמּוֹ וְדָבַק בְּאִשְׁתּוֹ
8 and the two become one flesh. They are no longer two, therefore, but one flesh.	8 וְהָיוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם לְבָשָׂר אֶחָד וְאִם־כֵּן אֵפוֹא אֵינָם עוֹד שְׁנַיִם כִּי אִם־בָּשָׂר אֶחָד
9 So then, what God has united, human beings must not divide.'	9 לָכֵן אֵת אֲשֶׁר־חִבַּר אֱלֹהִים לֹא יַפְרִידֶנּוּ אָדָם
10 Back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this,	10 וַיְהִי בַּבָּיִת וַיָּשׁוּבוּ תַלְמִידָיו לִשְׁאֹל אֹתוֹ עַל־זֹאת
11 and he said to them, 'Whoever divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her.	11 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הַמְשַׁלֵּחַ אֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹ וְלֹקֵחַ אַחֶרֶת נֹאֵף הוּא עָלֶיהָ
12 And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another she is guilty of adultery too.'	12 וְאִשָּׁה כִּי תַעֲזֹב אִישָׁהּ וְלָקְחָה אִישׁ אַחֵר נֹאֶפֶת הִיא
13 People were bringing little children to him, for him to touch them. The disciples scolded them,	13 וַיָּבִיאוּ אֵלָיו יְלָדִים לְמַעַן יִגַּע בָּהֶם וַיִּגְעֲרוּ הַתַּלְמִידִים בִּמְבִיאֵיהֶם
14 but when Jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them, 'Let the little children come to me; do notstop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.	14 וַיַּרְא יֵשׁוּעַ וַיִּכְעַס וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הַנִּיחוּ לַיְלָדִים לָבוֹא אֵלַי וְאַל־תִּמְנָעוּם כִּי לָאֵלֶּה מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים
15 In truth I tel you, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child wil never enterit.'	15 אָמֵן אֹמֵר אֲנִי לָכֶם כֹּל אֲשֶׁר־לֹא יְקַבֵּל אֶת־מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים כַּיֶּלֶד הוּא לֹא־יָבֹא בָהּ
16 Then he embraced them, laid his hands on them and gave them his blessing.	16 וַיְחַבְּקֵם וַיְבָרְכֵם בְּשֹוּמוֹ אֶת־יָדָיו עֲלֵיהֶם
17 He was setting out on a journey when a man ran up, knelt before him and put this question to him,'Good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'	17 וַיְהִי בְּצֵאתוֹ לַדֶּרֶךְ וְהִנֵּה־אִישׁ רָץ אֵלָיו וַיִּכְרַע לְפָנָיו וַיִּשְׁאַל אוֹתוֹ רַבִּי הַטּוֹב מָה אֶעֱשֶׂה וְאִירַשׁ חַיֵּי עוֹלָם
18 Jesus said to him, 'Why do you cal me good? No one is good but God alone.	18 וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ מַדּוּעַ קָרָאתָ לִּי טוֹב אֵין טוֹב בִּלְתִּי אֶחָד הָאֱלֹהִים
19 You know the commandments: You shal not kil ; You shal not commit adultery; You shal not steal;You shal not give false witness; You shal not defraud; Honour your father and mother.'	19 הֵן יָדַעְתָּ אֶת־הַמִּצְוֺת לֹא תִנְאָף לֹא תִרְצָח לֹא תִגְנֹב לֹא־תַעֲנֶה עֵד שָׁקֶר לֹא תַעֲשֹׁק כַּבֵּד אֶת־אָבִיךָ וְאֶת־אִמֶּךָ
20 And he said to him, 'Master, I have kept al these since my earliest days.'	20 וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו רַבִּי אֶת־כָּל־אֵלֶּה שָׁמַרְתִּי מִנְּעוּרָי
21 Jesus looked steadily at him and he was fil ed with love for him, and he said, 'You need to do onething more. Go and sell what you own and give the money to the poor, and you wil have treasure in heaven;then come, fol ow me.'	21 וַיַּבֶּט־בּוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֶּאֱהָבֵהוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַחַת חָסַרְתָּ לֵךְ מְכֹר אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לְךָ וְתֵן לָעֲנִיִּים וִיהִי־לְךָ אוֹצָר בַּשָּׁמָיִם וּבוֹא שָׂא אֶת־הַצְּלָב וְלֵךְ אַחֲרָי
22 But his face fel at these words and he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.	22 וַיֵּצֶר־לוֹ עַל־הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וַיֵּעָצֵב וַיֵּלֶךְ לוֹ כִּי־הוֹן רַב הָיָה לוֹ
23 Jesus looked round and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to enter thekingdom of God!'	23 וַיַּבֵּט יֵשׁוּעַ סָבִיב וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו כַּמָּה יִקְשֶׁה לְבַעֲלֵי נְכָסִים לָבוֹא אֶל־מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים
24 The disciples were astounded by these words, but Jesus insisted, 'My children,' he said to them, 'howhard it is to enter the kingdom of God!	24 וַיִּבָּהֲלוּ הַתַּלְמִידִים עַל־דְּבָרָיו וַיֹּסֶף יֵשׁוּעַ וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם בָּנַי מֶה קָשֶׁה לַבֹּטְחִים עַל־חֵילָם לָבוֹא אֶל־מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים
25 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter thekingdom of God.'	25 נָקֵל לַגָּמָל לַעֲבֹר בְּתוֹךְ נֶקֶב הַמַּחַט מִבּוֹא עָשִׁיר אֶל־מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים
26 They were more astonished than ever, saying to one another, 'In that case, who can be saved?'	26 וַיּוֹסִיפוּ עוֹד לְהִשְׁתּוֹמֵם וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל־אָחִיו מִי־אֵפוֹא יוּכַל לְהִוָּשֵׁעַ
27 Jesus gazed at them and said, 'By human resources it is impossible, but not for God: because forGod everything is possible.'	27 וַיַּבֶּט־בָּם יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמַר מִבְּנֵי אָדָם תִּפָּלֵא זֹאת אַךְ לֹא מֵאֱלֹהִים כִּי מֵאֱלֹהִים לֹא יִפָּלֵא כָּל־דָּבָר
28 Peter took this up. 'Look,' he said to him, 'we have left everything and fol owed you.'	28 וַיַּעַן פֶּטְרוֹס וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הֵן אֲנַחְנוּ עָזַבְנוּ אֶת־הַכֹּל וַנֵּלֶךְ אַחֲרֶיךָ
29 Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father,children or land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel	29 וַיֹּאמֶר יֵשׁוּעַ אָמֵן אֹמֵר אֲנִי לָכֶם כִּי אֵין אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר עָזַב אֶת־בֵּיתוֹ אוֹ אֶת־אֶחָיו אוֹ אֶת־אַחְיוֹתָיו אוֹ אֶת־אָבִיו אוֹ אֶת־אִמּוֹ אוֹ אֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹ אוֹ אֶת־בָּנָיו אוֹ אֶת־שְׂדוֹתָיו לְמַעֲנִי וּלְמַעַן הַבְּשׂוֹרָה
30 who wil not receive a hundred times as much, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and land-- and persecutions too -- now in this present time and, in the world to come, eternal life.	30 אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִקַּח עַתָּה בַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה בְּכָל־הָרְדִיפוֹת מֵאָה פְעָמִים כָּהֵמָּה בָּתִּים וְאַחִים וַאֲחָיוֹת וְאִמּוֹת וּבָנִים וְשָׂדוֹת וּבָעוֹלָם הַבָּא חַיֵּי עוֹלָמִים
31 Many who are first wil be last, and the last, first.'	31 וְאוּלָם רַבִּים מִן־הָרִאשׁוֹנִים יִהְיוּ אַחֲרוֹנִים וְהָאַחֲרוֹנִים רִאשׁוֹנִים
32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem; Jesus was walking on ahead of them; they were in adaze, and those who fol owed were apprehensive. Once more taking the Twelve aside he began to tel themwhat was going to happen to him,	32 וַיְהִי בַדֶּרֶךְ בַּעֲלוֹתָם יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וְיֵשׁוּעַ הוֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם וְהֵמָּה נִבְהָלִים וִירֵאִים בְּלֶכְתָּם אַחֲרָיו וַיּוֹסֶף לָקַחַת אֵלָיו אֶת־שְׁנֵים הֶעָשָׂר וַיָּחֶל לְהַגִּיד לָהֶם אֶת־אֲשֶׁר יִקְרֵהוּ לֵאמֹר
33 'Now we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chiefpriests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death and wil hand him over to the gentiles,	33 הִנֵּה אֲנַחְנוּ עֹלִים יְרוּשָׁלָיְמָה וּבֶן־הָאָדָם יִמָּסֵר לְרָאשֵׁי הַכֹּהֲנִים וְלַסּוֹפְרִים וְיַרְשִׁיעֻהוּ לָמוּת וְיִמְסְרוּ אֹתוֹ לַגּוֹיִם
34 who wil mock him and spit at him and scourge him and put him to death; and after three days he wilrise again.'	34 וִיהָתֵלּוּ בוֹ וְיַכֻּהוּ בַּשּׁוֹטִים וְיָרֹקּוּ בְּפָנָיו וִימִיתֻהוּ וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי קוֹם יָקוּם
35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him. 'Master,' they said to him, 'We want you todo us a favour.'	35 וַיִּקְרְבוּ אֵלָיו יַעֲקֹב וְיוֹחָנָן בְּנֵי זַבְדַּי וַיֹּאמְרוּ רַבִּי אִוְּתָה נַפְשֵׁנוּ כִּי־תַעֲשֶׂה לָנוּ אֶת־אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁאַל מִמֶּךָּ
36 He said to them, 'What is it you want me to do for you?'	36 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם מָה־אִוִּיתֶם כִּי־אֶעֱשֶׂה לָכֶם
37 They said to him, 'Al ow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.'	37 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו תְּנָה־לָּנוּ לָשֶׁבֶת אֶחָד לִימִינְךָ וְאֶחָד לִשְׂמֹאלְךָ בִּכְבוֹדֶךָ
38 But Jesus said to them, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I shaldrink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I shal be baptised?'	38 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ לֹא יְדַעְתֶּם אֵת אֲשֶׁר שְׁאֶלְתֶּם הֲיָכֹל תּוּכְלוּ לִשְׁתּוֹת אֶת־הַכּוֹס אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי שֹׁתֶה וּלְהִטָּבֵל בַּטְּבִילָה אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי נִטְבָּל בָּהּ
39 They replied, 'We can.' Jesus said to them, 'The cup that I shal drink you shal drink, and with thebaptism with which I shal be baptised you shal be baptised,	39 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו נוּכָל וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ אֶת־הַכּוֹס אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִי שֹׁתֶה תִּשְׁתּוּ וּבַטְּבִילָה אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי נִטְבָּל בָּהּ תִּטָּבֵלוּ
40 but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whomthey have been al otted.'	40 אַךְ שֶׁבֶת לִימִינִי וְלִשְׂמֹאלִי אֵין בְּיָדִי לְתִתָּהּ בִּלְתִּי לַאֲשֶׁר הוּכַן לָהֶם
41 When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John,	41 וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ זֹאת הָעֲשָׂרָה וַיָּחֵלּוּ לִכְעוֹס עַל־יַעֲקֹב וְיוֹחָנָן
42 so Jesus cal ed them to him and said to them, 'You know that among the gentiles those they cal theirrulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt.	42 וַיִּקְרָא לָהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אַתֶּם יְדַעְתֶּם כִּי הַנֶּחֱשָׁבִים לְשָׂרֵי הַגּוֹיִם הֵם רֹדִים בָּהֶם וּגְדוֹלֵיהֶם שׁוֹלְטִים עֲלֵיהֶם
43 Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be yourservant,	43 וְאַתֶּם לֹא־כֵן בֵּינֵיכֶם כִּי אִם־הֶחָפֵץ לִהְיוֹת גָּדוֹל בֵּינֵיכֶם יִהְיֶה לָכֶם לִמְשָׁרֵת
44 and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all.	44 וְהֶחָפֵץ לִהְיוֹת בָּכֶם רִאשׁוֹן יִהְיֶה עֶבֶד לַכֹּל
45 For the Son of man himself came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.'	45 כִּי בֶן־הָאָדָם אַף־הוּא לֹא בָא לְמַעַן יְשָׁרְתוּהוּ כִּי אִם־לְשָׁרֵת וְלָתֵת אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ כֹּפֶר תַּחַת רַבִּים
46 They reached Jericho; and as he left Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus -- thatis, the son of Timaeus -- a blind beggar, was sitting at the side of the road.	46 וַיָּבֹאוּ יְרִיחוֹ וַיְהִי כְּצֵאתוֹ מִירִיחוֹ הוּא וְתַלְמִידָיו וַהֲמוֹן עַם רָב וְהִנֵּה בַּרְטִימַי בֶּן־טִימַי אִישׁ עִוֵּר יָשַׁב עַל־יַד הַדֶּרֶךְ לִשְׁאֹל נְדָבוֹת
47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and cry out, 'Son of David, Jesus,have pity on me.'	47 וַיִּשְׁמַע כִּי הוּא יֵשׁוּעַ הַנָּצְרִי וַיָּחֶל לִצְעֹק וַיֹּאמַר אָנָּא בֶן־דָּוִד יֵשׁוּעַ חָנֵּנִי
48 And many of them scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted al the louder, 'Son ofDavid, have pity on me.'	48 וַיִּגְעֲרוּ־בוֹ רַבִּים לְהַשְׁתִּיקוֹ וְהוּא הִרְבָּה לִצְעֹק בֶּן־דָּוִד חָנֵּנִי
49 Jesus stopped and said, 'Cal him here.' So they cal ed the blind man over. 'Courage,' they said, 'getup; he is calling you.'	49 וַיַּעֲמֹד יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר קִרְאוּ־לוֹ וַיִּקְרְאוּ לָעִוֵּר וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו חֲזַק קוּם קָרָא־לָךְ
50 So throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus.	50 וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ אֶת־שִׂמְלָתוֹ מֵעָלָיו וַיָּקָם וַיָּבֹא אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ
51 Then Jesus spoke, 'What do you want me to do for you?' The blind man said to him, 'Rabbuni, let mesee again.'	51 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מֶה־חָפַצְתָּ וְאֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּךְ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הָעִוֵּר רַבִּי כִּי אֶרְאֶה
52 Jesus said to him, 'Go; your faith has saved you.' And at once his sight returned and he fol owed himalong the road.	52 וַיֹּאמֶר יֵשׁוּעַ אֵלָיו לֶךְ־לְךָ אֱמוּנָתְךָ הוֹשִׁיעָה לָּךְ וּפִתְאֹם רָאָה וַיֵּלֶךְ אַחֲרֵי יֵשׁוּעַ בַּדָּרֶךְ
