1 'Be careful not to parade your uprightness in public to attract attention; otherwise you wil lose al rewardfrom your Father in heaven.1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in thesynagogues and in the streets to win human admiration. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing;3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 'And when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in thesynagogues and at the street corners for people to see them. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But when you pray, go to your private room, shut yourself in, and so pray to your Father who is in thatsecret place, and your Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 'In your prayers do not babble as the gentiles do, for they think that by using many words they wil makethemselves heard.7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him.8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 So you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy,9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us.12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not put us to the test, but save us from the Evil One.13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
14 'Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father wil forgive you yours;14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 but if you do not forgive others, your Father wil not forgive your failings either.15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 'When you are fasting, do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they go about lookingunsightly to let people know they are fasting. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
17 But when you fast, put scent on your head and wash your face,17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
18 so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees al that is done in secret; andyour Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
19 'Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and woodworm destroy them andthieves can break in and steal.19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworm destroys them andthieves cannot break in and steal.20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For wherever your treasure is, there wil your heart be too.21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 'The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is clear, your whole body will be fil ed withlight.22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkened,what darkness that wil be!23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 'No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or beattached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25 'That is why I am tel ing you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your bodyand what you are to wear. Surely life is more than food, and the body more than clothing!25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Fatherfeeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are?26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27 Can any of you, however much you worry, add one single cubit to your span of life?27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28 And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields; they never have to work orspin;28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 yet I assure you that not even Solomon in al his royal robes was clothed like one of these.29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Now if that is how God clothes the wild flowers growing in the field which are there today and throwninto the furnace tomorrow, wil he not much more look after you, you who have so little faith?30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31 So do not worry; do not say, "What are we to eat? What are we to drink? What are we to wear?"31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 It is the gentiles who set their hearts on al these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need themal .32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on God's saving justice, and al these other things wil begiven you as wel .33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow wil take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of itsown.'34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
