NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
At this time the disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?'1 In illa hora accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes : Quis, putas, major est in regno cælorum ?
So he cal ed a little child to him whom he set among them.2 Et advocans Jesus parvulum, statuit eum in medio eorum,
Then he said, 'In truth I tel you, unless you change and become like little children you wil never enterthe kingdom of Heaven.3 et dixit : Amen dico vobis, nisi conversi fueritis, et efficiamini sicut parvuli, non intrabitis in regnum cælorum.
And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.4 Quicumque ergo humiliaverit se sicut parvulus iste, hic est major in regno cælorum.
'Anyone who welcomes one little child like this in my name welcomes me.5 Et qui susceperit unum parvulum talem in nomine meo, me suscipit :
But anyone who is the downfall of one of these little ones who have faith in me would be betterdrowned in the depths of the sea with a great millstone round his neck.6 qui autem scandalizaverit unum de pusillis istis, qui in me credunt, expedit ei ut suspendatur mola asinaria in collo ejus, et demergatur in profundum maris.
Alas for the world that there should be such causes of fal ing! Causes of falling indeed there must be,but alas for anyone who provides them!7 Væ mundo a scandalis ! Necesse est enim ut veniant scandala : verumtamen væ homini illi, per quem scandalum venit.
'If your hand or your foot should be your downfal , cut it off and throw it away: it is better for you toenter into life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.8 Si autem manus tua, vel pes tuus scandalizat te, abscide eum, et projice abs te : bonum tibi est ad vitam ingredi debilem, vel claudum, quam duas manus vel duos pedes habentem mitti in ignem æternum.
And if your eye should be your downfal , tear it out and throw it away: it is better for you to enter intolife with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the hel of fire.9 Et si oculus tuus scandalizat te, erue eum, et projice abs te : bonum tibi est cum uno oculo in vitam intrare, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis.
'See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tel you that theirin heaven are continually inthe presence of my Father in heaven.10 Videte ne contemnatis unum ex his pusillis : dico enim vobis, quia angeli eorum in cælis semper vident faciem Patris mei, qui in cælis est.
11 Venit enim Filius hominis salvare quod perierat.
'Tel me. Suppose a man has a hundred sheep and one of them strays; will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go in search of the stray?12 Quid vobis videtur ? si fuerint alicui centum oves, et erravit una ex eis : nonne relinquit nonaginta novem in montibus, et vadit quærere eam quæ erravit ?
In truth I tel you, if he finds it, it gives him more joy than do the ninety-nine that did not stray at al .13 Et si contigerit ut inveniat eam : amen dico vobis, quia gaudet super eam magis quam super nonaginta novem, quæ non erraverunt.
Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.14 Sic non est voluntas ante Patrem vestrum, qui in cælis est, ut pereat unus de pusillis istis.
'If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. Ifhe listens to you, you have won back your brother.15 Si autem peccaverit in te frater tuus, vade, et corripe eum inter te, et ipsum solum : si te audierit, lucratus eris fratrem tuum.
If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you: whatever the misdemeanour, theevidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain the charge.16 Si autem te non audierit, adhibe tecum adhuc unum, vel duos, ut in ore duorum, vel trium testium stet omne verbum.
But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to thecommunity, treat him like a gentile or a tax col ector.17 Quod si non audierit eos : dic ecclesiæ. Si autem ecclesiam non audierit, sit tibi sicut ethnicus et publicanus.
'In truth I tel you, whatever you bind on earth wil be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earthwil be loosed in heaven.18 Amen dico vobis, quæcumque alligaveritis super terram, erunt ligata et in cælo : et quæcumque solveritis super terram, erunt soluta et in cælo.
'In truth I tel you once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at al , it wil be granted toyou by my Father in heaven.19 Iterum dico vobis, quia si duo ex vobis consenserint super terram, de omni re quamcumque petierint, fiet illis a Patre meo, qui in cælis est.
For where two or three meet in my name, I am there among them.'20 Ubi enim sunt duo vel tres congregati in nomine meo, ibi sum in medio eorum.
Then Peter went up to him and said, 'Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? Asoften as seven times?'21 Tunc accedens Petrus ad eum, dixit : Domine, quoties peccabit in me frater meus, et dimittam ei ? usque septies ?
Jesus answered, 'Not seven, I tel you, but seventy-seven times.22 Dicit illi Jesus : Non dico tibi usque septies : sed usque septuagies septies.
'And so the kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts withhis servants.23 Ideo assimilatum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui voluit rationem ponere cum servis suis.
When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents;24 Et cum cœpisset rationem ponere, oblatus est ei unus, qui debebat ei decem millia talenta.
he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wifeand children and al his possessions, to meet the debt.25 Cum autem non haberet unde redderet, jussit eum dominus ejus venundari, et uxorem ejus, et filios, et omnia quæ habebat, et reddi.
At this, the servant threw himself down at his master's feet, with the words, "Be patient with me and Iwil pay the whole sum."26 Procidens autem servus ille, orabat eum, dicens : Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.
And the servant's master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancel ed the debt.27 Misertus autem dominus servi illius, dimisit eum, et debitum dimisit ei.
Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fel ow-servant who owed him one hundreddenari ; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him, saying, "Pay what you owe me."28 Egressus autem servus ille invenit unum de conservis suis, qui debebat ei centum denarios : et tenens suffocavit eum, dicens : Redde quod debes.
His fel ow-servant fell at his feet and appealed to him, saying, "Be patient with me and I wil pay you."29 Et procidens conservus ejus, rogabat eum, dicens : Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.
But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison til he should pay thedebt.30 Ille autem noluit : sed abiit, et misit eum in carcerem donec redderet debitum.
His fel ow-servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went totheir master and reported the whole affair to him.31 Videntes autem conservi ejus quæ fiebant, contristati sunt valde : et venerunt, et narraverunt domino suo omnia quæ facta fuerant.
Then the master sent for the man and said to him, "You wicked servant, I cancelled all that debt ofyours when you appealed to me.32 Tunc vocavit illum dominus suus : et ait illi : Serve nequam, omne debitum dimisi tibi quoniam rogasti me :
Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow-servant just as I had pity on you?"33 nonne ergo oportuit et te misereri conservi tui, sicut et ego tui misertus sum ?
And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers til he should pay al his debt.34 Et iratus dominus ejus tradidit eum tortoribus, quoadusque redderet universum debitum.
And that is how my heavenly Father wil deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from yourheart.'35 Sic et Pater meus cælestis faciet vobis, si non remiseritis unusquisque fratri suo de cordibus vestris.
